941,301. Sorting materials by X-rays. ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE CHARLEROI. Jan 25,1961 [July 21,1960], No. 1144/63. Divided out of 936,161. Heading G1A. [Also in Division B2] Grains 2 of mineral material delivered by a shoot 1 are picked up by suction holes 4 in a rotating vacuum drum 3 and conveyed past a row of X-ray sources 12 whereby signals are produced in corresponding ones of a row of X-ray detectors 13 depending whether the grains are transparent or not to X-rays, the signals being applied to a multiple head magnetic recording device 14 and being derived subsequently by a multiple head pick-up device 15 and employed to control the operation of a row of scraper flaps 15-17. Grains not removed by the scraper flaps are discharged at another position when the holes 4 align with a chamber 19 which communicates with a compressed air conduit 9. The X-ray sources 11, detectors 13 and pick-up heads 15 may be staggered instead of being in a line. The shoot is arranged in a direction which includes a chord of the drum.
