Abstract

849,797. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 25, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 6593/59. Class 100(1) Sheet separators: - Sheets are separated sequentially from a pile or moving belts by a rotary suction roller 8 which attracts the top sheet to its surface and carries it past a pair of fixed suction members 12 to forwarding belts 13, the members 12 holding back a further sheet in the event of double feed by the roller. The roller 8 is driven by a belt 17 and pulley, and has a fixed inner sector connected to a vacuum source, and peripheral slots 14 which are inclined to its axis. The members 12 are relatively narrow and arranged on either side of the roller 8, and apertures 16 therein form a T-shaped pattern and are connected to the vacuum source. Rollers 7, 10 guide the sheet during separation, and compressed air may be blown beneath the sheet through an aperture 15 in the front wall 11 of the sheet hopper 1. Pile Tables:-The sheets are held in a hopper 1 having a movable platform 2 attached by a rod 3 to a piston 4 in a cylinder to which compressed air can be admitted through a control cock 5. The rollers 7 are carried by levers 6 which open and close the cock according to the height of the sheet pile. In one position of the cock, compressed air is admitted beneath the piston 4, and in the other position, the space beneath the piston is connected to atmosphere. The top edge of the front wall 11 of the hopper is curved to guide the sheets, and it is apertured at 15 to allow air flow into the tapered space above the pile and beneath the sheet being separated. In a modification, sheets are separated from the bottom of a pile, or from a conveyer belt.
