Abstract
A process for the manufacture of low-phosphorus, high-carbon steel from molten pig-iron comprises blowing the molten iron from above continuously or intermittently with oxygen or oxygen enriched air containing, for at least a part of the blowing time, a dephosphorising agent in suspension, and maintaining the carbon content of the melt at not less than 0.2% by one or more carburising operations in which a carbonaceous material in suspension in a carrier gas is blown in below the surface of the melt. The dephosphorising material, e.g. lime, may all be added in the blast, or a portion may be added directly to the melt and the remainder in the blast, and the blow continued until the melt has a carbon content of 0.6% and a phosphorus content of 0.13%. The slag may then be removed and the carburisation performed by blowing graphite, anthracite, coke or coal in powder form in suspension in a carrier gas, e.g. nitrogen, or carbon dioxide or a mixture of either with air or carbon monoxide, below the surface of the metal until the carbon content is 1.2% and the phosphorus is 0.14%. The process is completed by blowing with oxygen containing the dephosphorising material until the carbon is 0.53% and the phosphorus 0.035%. The carbonaceous material may be added at the same time as the oxygen and dephosphorising material after deslagging but the carburising blow should finish sufficiently before the end of the process to allow a final oxidising blow.
