Abstract
A process for the desulphurization and desiliconization of pig iron comprises blowing finely divided wire entrained in an inert gas through the molten pig iron and then without removing the slag, blowing an oxidizing gas having no gaseous reducing products through the metal. The inert gas may be nitrogen, argon or hydrogen and the oxidizing gas oxygen, carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide. A solid coolant, e.g. carbon dust, finely divided lime, iron or manganese oxides or ores, may be added with the oxygen when it is used as the oxidizing gas.
