Abstract
Low to medium carbon ferromanganese is made by mixing a molten manganese alloy with a high manganese slag in a basic lined vessel, removing the slag, blowing the alloy while adding manganese ore and lime to form ferromanganese having a greater manganese content and a lower silicon content than the original alloy together with a high manganese slag which is then removed from the alloy product. The gas used for blowing may be oxidizing (e.g. oxygen) or if sufficient oxygen is added as the ore it may be an inert gas for the purpose of stirring only. During the mixing step the mixture is preferably transferred more than once between two ladles.
