Abstract

In roasting a sulphide or concentrate, e.g. zinc sulphide or pyrites concentrate, by maintaining an ignited porous body of mobile pellets of the ore concentrate in a vessel rotatable about its substantially horizontal major axis, and introducing air downwardly into the body of moving pellets below the surface thereof, e.g. as disclosed in Specification 701,556, volatilization of any cadmium, lead, arsenic, silver and present is effected by introducing the air at a plurality of axially spaced points under such conditions as to establish and maintain a plurality of non-contiguous brightly incandescent roasting zones separated from each other by a visibly less bright mass of moving pellets. The temperature of the roasting zones may thus be 1050 DEG -1200 DEG C., with the adjacent zones 50 DEG -100 DEG C. lower. The volatilized solids are separated from the roaster gas by a combination of cyclone separation and electrostatic precipitation; the zinc and cadmium content is dissolved in sulphuric acid, and the solution used as a binder in the production of the pellets. The pellets, which term includes short extruded rods &c. may be up to 1/2 inch diameter.
