Abstract

<PICT:0701556/III/1> Sulphide ore concentrates are roasted, as a porous body 7 of mobile pellets, in a rotary kiln 5, the roasting air being delivered downwardly into the body of the pellets through a plurality of conduits 12 connected to an air line 11. The latter may be provided with a jacket through which circulates cooling air, water, &c. The kiln movement may be continuous or reciprocatory. The concentrate, e.g. iron, zinc or copper sulphide, may be pelleted by the addition of water and a sulphate which may be obtained from the roasted material removed from the roaster gas. Bentonite or sulphite liquor may also be added. Pellets up to 1/2 inch diameter may be used; small particles should be absent. A roasting temperature up to 1000 DEG -1100 DEG C. is specified. Any cadmium, lead, arsenic, silver or gold present is volatilized. Specifications 238,928, [Class 51 (ii)], and 701,555 are referred to.
