Abstract
Rich lead sulphide materials are smelted in admixture with soda and carbon and if desired, iron oxide, in a rotary reverberatory furnace at a temperature between 700 DEG and 1000 DEG C. thereby retaining the lead in the furnace as molten metal. The iron oxide may be added in a maximum amount of approximately 200 per cent of the soda content of the charge and up to 10 per cent of the soda may be replaced by sodium chloride or sodium sulphate. The method allows separation of lead from some of its accompanying metals since copper and arsenic together with the major proportion of bismuth go into the sulphide phase; antimony and the noble metals remain with the lead and may be separated therefrom by the usual refining methods. The raw materials are preferably granulated to a grain size of 3-10 m.m. by wetting with water at 50 DEG -70 DEG C., before charging into the furnace, said furnace advantageously being one rotating about a horizontal axis and with its interior length not greater than its internal diameter. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 713,177.
