Abstract

Potassium manganate is manufactured by suspending manganese dioxide in an excess of melted caustic potash containing water, containing 60-85 per cent of potassium hydroxide, and heated to a temperature of approximately 160- 200‹ C., and blowing pure or dilute oxygen through the mass, which is also mechanically stirred. The rate of flow of the gas is adjusted to carry away the greater portion of the water liberated during the reaction. At the end of the reaction, the excess alkali may be recovered by treating the reaction product with a limited quantity of water or dilute alkaline lye or by decanting the fused mass. As raw materials, natural or artificial manganese dioxide may be used. Also, other oxides of manganese or compounds adapted to liberate them, which, under the conditions of the reaction, are transformed into manganate, may be used.
