Abstract
Thiourea is obtained by heating metal cyanides such as calcium cyanamide in admixture with sulphur or substances containing free or combined sulphur, the combined sulphur being in the sulphidic condition and hydrogen being present in the form of water, hydrogen sulphide or the like, at a temperature below 150 DEG C, say 100-130 DEG C. The thiourea ether directly or after extraction is thereupon converted into sulpho cyanide compounds by heating at 150-250 DEG C. The sulphur containing materials referred to are calcium sulphide, alkali or alkaline earth metal hydrosulphides or substances which by interaction are able to form them alone or together with sulphur, alkali sulphides if desired in conjunction with hydrogen sulphide, mixtures of solutions containing calcium hydrosulphide and alkali hydrosulphides or sulphates, and used gas-purification material. Alkali or alkaline-earth oxides or other alkali or alkaline earth metal compounds, for example in the form of waste lyes from prussian blue manufacture containing alkali sulphates, may be added to the initial mixture. The initial mixture may also contain sufficient water to make the mass crumbly.ALSO:Sulphocyanide compounds are obtained by heating metal cyanamides such as calcium cyanamide in admixture with sulphur or substances containing free or combined sulphur, the combined sulphur being in the sulphidic condition and hydrogen being present in the form of water, hydrogen sulphide or the like, at a temperature below 150 DEG C. to produce thiourea, the thiourea, either directly or after extraction, being thereupon heated to a temperature of 150-250 DEG C. Ammonia is also produced in the process. The sulphur containing materials referred to are calcium sulphide, hydrosulphides of the alkali or alkaline-earth metals or substances which by interaction are able to form them alone or with sulphur, alkali sulphides if desired in conjunction with hydrogen sulphide, mixtures of solutions containing calcium hydrosulphide and alkali hydrosulphides or sulphates, and used gas-purification material. Alkali or alkaline-earth oxides or hydrates may be added to the initial mixture which may also contain sufficient water to make the mass crumbly. Small amounts of alkali or alkaline-earth metal compounds, for example in the form of the waste lyes from prussian-blue manufacture containing alkali sulphates, may be added to promote the reactions. The products resulting from the process are lixiviated to recover the sulphocyanide compounds. According to examples, (1) a mass consisting of calcium cyanamide, pulverized sulphur and sodium hydrosulphide solution is heated first at 130 DEG C. and then at 180 DEG C.; (2) a mass consisting of calcium cyanamide admixed with calcium hydrosulphide solution is heated first to 105 DEG C. and then to 180 DEG C.; (3) a mixture of calcium cyanamide with used gas-purification material containing sulphur and lime is heated at 100-105 DEG C. and then at 180 DEG C.
