Abstract
Potassium sulphate is made by mixing finely pulverized potassium chloride with the theoretical quantity of sulphuric acid or potassium bisulphate solution of such strength that the moist mixture remains pulverulent, and this pulverulent condition is maintained throughout the process; for instance, 70 per cent sulphuric acid may be used, or a weaker acid if there is dissolved in it sufficient potassium sulphate to keep the mass pulverulent; or some potassium bisulphate may be dissolved in aqueous sulphuric acid. The mixture is heated to 100-120 DEG C., that is, not exceeding its melting-point, for instance, in a muffle and is stirred while the reaction proceeds. About half the hydrochloric acid is evolved, and is condensed. The temperature is then raised to 300 DEG C. either in the same furnace or in the pan of a salt-cake furnace, which for this purpose may be made of refractory brick instead of iron when almost the whole of the remaining salt is decomposed. The mass may be finally heated in a muffle to 700-800 DEG C. to complete the reaction. When a small excess of sulphuric acid is employed which is desirable if complete reaction is desired, the excess is expelled with the last portions of the hydrochloric acid, and this acid, liberated at the final calcination, may be collected separately and is passed through a washing tower fed with sulphuric acid to recover the excess.
