Abstract

166,557. Jubany, R. V. July 20, 1920, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Nitric acid; sodium hydrate. - Sodium nitrate is decomposed by superheated steam under the action of a catalyst to produce nitric acid and sodium hydrate. The nitrate is dried in a pan 1 and fed to melting pots 3 and thence to the reaction vessel 8. The reaction vessel contains the catalyst 14 between perforated plates 11, 15 and superheated steam is admitted by a pipe 12. Nitric acid passes off by a pipe 9 having branches 10 leading to cooling and absorption apparatus 20, 21, 24, 26. A sandstone fan 27 causes a suction in the top of the tower 26 to draw the gases along. Caustic soda flows through an outlet 18 and is collected in a tank 19.
