Abstract

297,581. Branda, B. Oct. 11, 1927. Separating by mechanical pickers.-Apparatus for separating the kernels and shells of cracked nuts comprises a feeding and preliminary screening device consisting of a rotating tube 3 with a bevelled end turning in a hopper 2 and provided with perforations 6 of adjustable size and a surrounding rotating cylindrical screen 21, and a separating device consisting of two rollers 39, 11 the latter of which is provided with projections on which the soft kernels are impaled when pressed thereon by the former. 'The roller 11 is secured to the tube 3 and the roller 39 consists of a series of rings which are pressed by spring fingers 40 against two rotating shafts 32, 33 in driving connections with the tube 3. The means for adjusting the apertures 6 in the tube 3 consists of a movable sleeve 5 with corresponding apertures. The cylindrical screen 21 is secured along with a cylinder 23 on the tube 3 and rotates therewith. The middlings from the screen pass into the cylinder 23 and are lifted by scoops 29 and passed by way of the hopper 30 between the rollers, the hard shells passing straight through into a shoot 17 and ultimately being delivered by the apertures 24 and the soft kernels being carried round by the roller 11 till stripped off by the side 13 of a discharge shoot 16 which passes them to the outside of the machine. The cylinder is divided into two compartments 26, 27 so as to provide a repetition of the separating operation, the shells from each passage being returned to the head of the cylinder.
