Abstract

249,123. Aarts, C. J. G. March 10, 1925. [Convention date]. Distilling zinc.- Zinc vapours mixed with carbon monoxide are condensed while being passed vertically upwards, the condensed zinc along with dust and zinc oxide which may be formed passing downwards to the hotter zone where the oxide is again reduced and evaporated. The temperatures of the different zones of the condenser are separately adjustable. Dust and oxide which are still contained in the current at the top of its travel may be collected and reintroduced into the condenser at its hottest zone. In the apparatus shown, the mixture is admitted at 2 to the lower part of a long vertical passage 1 adjustably cooled by means of coils 5 that are independent of each other. Liquid zinc collects in a chamber 3, while dust &c. passes out at the top and may be collected in a chamber 6 provided with cooling pipes 7. The collected dust may be passed through a passage 11 and fed by means of a conveyer 13 to the bottom of the passage 1.
