Abstract

Electrode pitch binders are obtained by continuously supplying a pitch of Kraemer-Sarnov softening point between 55 DEG and 65 DEG C. obtained by distillation of coal tars to a cooking zone maintained at 390 DEG to 400 DEG C. and where there is created a distillation of the oils contained therein after having caused it to pass through successively, and against the current of oil vapours coming from the cooking zone, a first treating zone where the condensation of the medium fractions of distillation of said oils and their mixture with said starting pitch occur, and an intermediate treating zone where the condensation of the heavy fractions of said oils <PICT:0957578/C3/1> and their mixture with the pitch coming from the first treating zone occur, and continuously withdrawing the pitch formed in said cooking zone. The starting pitch, which may be obtained by the continuous distillation of coal tars, may be mixed with the heaviest oils, e.g. chrysene oils of boiling point greater than 350 DEG C., coming from the continuous distillation. The first and intermediate treating zones are maintained at 300 DEG to 320 DEG C. and 350 DEG to 370 DEG C. respectively. The starting pitch enters the apparatus through pipe 1 to the upper part of the reaction column 5, which comprises three superimposed zones, an upper zone 6, an intermediate zone 7, and a lower or cooking zone 8. The zones are connected by central passageways 6c and 7c in which are disposed elements such as Raschig rings 9 for contacting the downflowing pitch with the vapours from the cooking zone 8. Light oils are removed from the top of the column through pipe 10 and electrode pitch is drawn off through pipe 18. The pitch may remain about 2 hours in the first zone, 4 to 5 hours in the intermediate zone, and 5 to 6 hours in the cooking zone.
