Abstract

1393114 Cooling sachets BOWATER PACKAGING Ltd 5 May 1972 [8 May 1971 10 Sept 1971] 13890/71 and 42261/71 Heading F4H A cooling device, particularly for use in medical treatments, includes within a synthetic plastics envelope 11 a readily rupturable sachet 18 containing water, and first and second salts both endothermically soluble in water. As shown the salts are separated by a constriction pinched between a rod 14 and plastics clip 15. In other embodiments, the device may have an outer envelope and an inner envelope separated into three compartments; or alternatively the salts may be mixed together provided there is no reaction in the absence of water. In the latter case, the particles of one salt may be coated with a material which prevents the passage of moisture therethrough. Preferably the salts are hydrated sodium carbonate and ammonium nitrate, present in a weight ratio of 143 : 80. The weight of water is between 5 and 15% of the combined weight of the salts. Other suitable materials include Na 2 SO 4 .10H 2 O, Na 2 B 4 O 7 .10H 2 O and urea.
