Abstract

1369992 Packages BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 17 May 1972 [9 June 1971] 19728/71 Heading B8C The relative humidity within a package, for example of tobacco, is maintained substantially constant by the inclusion within the package of an absorbent body containing a saturated aqueous solution of a metal or ammonium salt of an inorganic or organic acid, or a mixture thereof, with sufficient excess salt to maintain the humidity. A packet 1 of cigarettes 2 includes a sachet 4 of heat-sealed thermoplastics containing paper 8 treated with the salt solution. Larger sachets may be included in large cartons of multiple packets of cigarettes. Thermoplastics such as nylon polystyrene, cellulose acetate may be used. A tobacco pouch 12 with a peelable seal 18 and flap 19 comprises an outer layer of low water-vapour permeability polypropylene, an inner layer of high water-vapour permeability polystyrene, and a salt impregnated sheet 15 between them.
