Abstract

838,195. Surgical cooling. BOBBINS, A. A. July 19, 1958, No. 23229/58. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A package forming a medical cooling pad or for cooling a storage container is made from flexible chemically-inert material and has a compartment for holding a freezing compound and another holding a hydrous substance (e.g. water or an hydrated salt), means being provided to mix the compound with the substance to produce cold. As shown in Fig. 2, outer and inner sealed plastic containers 1, 6 contain the freezing compound and water respectively and the container 6 can be punctured by a sharp member within the package or ruptured by tearing, the container 1 being left intact. Container 1 may be lined with a reflecting layer 2 to reduce the cold intensity and an absorbent layer to distribute the water. The package of Fig. 2 can be enclosed in an outer envelope containing air to reduce the cooling effect. As shown in Fig. 4, compartments 12, 13 are separated by a welded seam 14 adapted to be opened by pressure on the compartments. As shown in Fig. 9, the plastic container 25 is tied at its middle and one half contains the freezing compound 30 and the other the container 32 for the hydrous material. The compound may include an absorbent for any gases evolved in the reaction.
