Abstract

1367069 Refining metals BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO Ltd 17 Jan 1972 [22 Oct 1970] 50212/70 Heading C7D A process for removing non-metallic constituents, e.g. gas and other inclusions, from metals comprises causing a stream of liquid metal to flow continuously through a containing vessel at a rate such that the residence time of the metal in the vessel is at least 0À5 minutes, while agitating the metal in the vessel and maintaining on the surface of the metal a salt flux in an amount at least equal to 1 lb. per 100 sq. ins. of surface area. The metal is preferably aluminium or magnesium and the flux consists of chlorides or and/or fluorides of alkali metals and/or alkaline earth metals. In apparatus as shown in Fig. 1, molten metal flows from launder L 1 into chamber A of crucible 1 which also includes a second chamber B, the chambers being separated by baffle 2. The metal in chamber A is agitated by stirrer 6, mounted at an angle so that the metal tends to circulate in a plane inclined to the horizontal, and preferably rotating at 25 to 150 r.p.m.; the metal then passes through a bed of refractory granules 7 which extend at least to the bottom of baffle 2, and practically fill chamber B, before passing out along launder 3. The flux layer 5 is maintained on the surface of the metal in chamber A.
