Abstract

1,187,974. Refining metals. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. May 22, 1967 [May 23, 1966; July 5, 1966], Nos. 23739/67 and 30198/66. Divided out of 1,187, 972. Heading C7D. In a process and apparatus for refining molten metal the latter is allowed to fall freely under the influence of gravity from a nozzle such that the metal stream has a cross-section e. g. rectangular or elliptical, of which the major dimension is several times larger than the minor; the stream is shattered by one or more streams of oxidizing gas which impinge on and extend across one or each side of major dimension of the metal stream. As shown in Fig. 4 metal is discharged from tundish 12, and the stream is shattered by jets of gas from nozzles 5; there is also provision for supplying a curtain of flux along the major sides of the metal stream. The gas discharge means may have convergent-divergent nozzles to accelerate the flow of gas therethrough.
