Abstract
An alloy is manufactured by injecting a reducing component B in a divided solid state, which consists of or includes at least one of the elements Si, Al, Mg, B, Ti, Be, alkaline earth and alkali metals, into the liquid mass of a component A, which consists of or includes an oxide, halide or a sulphide of at least one of the elements Co, Ni, Mn, Cr, Mo, W, U, V, Nb, Ta, Sn, Ti, Zr, Th, B, Y, Misch metal, Be, alkaline earth and alkali metals, or vice versa-divided solid component A injected into the liquid mass of component B, using a gaseous carrier such as air, oxygen, superheated steam, nitrogen, CO2, CO, CH4, A, or mixtures thereof used simultaneously or successively. The component A may be a slag, dross, an ore e.g. containing more than 50% Fe2O3, or the product of a preceding metallurgical operation such as a partial carbothermic reduction. The component B may be a ferro-alloy or cupro-alloy. At least one divided solid slagging component consisting of or including at least one of the compounds CaO, CaCO3, MgO, MgCO3, MnO2, SiO2 and CaF2 may be injected into the liquid reaction mass, the temperature of which is preferably raised by an electric furnace or by the injection into the mass of a powdered exothermic solid consisting of or including one or more oxidizing substances such as Fe2O3, NaNO3, KClO4 and/or component A, with the reducing component B. Examples of alloys produced are:- (1) 64% Mn, 30% Si, 5.9% Fe, below 0.1% C; (2) 90-95% Mn, 5-10% Fe, below 1% Si, below 0.3% C; (3) 69-70% Cr, 29-30% Fe, below 0.6% Si, max. 0.02% N, max. 0.02% C, max. 0.01% P; (4) 54% Fe, 26% Ti, 20% Al; (5) 42 parts Ti, 30 parts Al, 25-26 parts Fe; (6) 52 parts Fe, 40 parts.Ti, 4 parts Al; (7) 70 parts Nb + Ta, 27 parts Fe, 0.5 parts Al, 0.1 part 0; (8) 70% Si, 19% Fe, 11% Misch metal, 0.03% C:(9) 70% Cr, 29% Fe, 0.02% C, 0.3% Si; (10) 88% Al, 11% Ti, 0.01% C; (11) 87% Al, 12% Mn, 0.03% C; (12) 62% Si, 28% Ca, 10% Misch metal, 0.07% C; (13) 56% Si, 44% Ca, 0.05% C.
