Abstract

A polishing composition comprises a wax/liquid medium in which part of the liquid medium is sec.- tert.- or iso-butanol, or sec.-propanol. The composition comprises 50-95% by weight of the liquid medium, of which up to 50%, usually 10-40%, is the alcohol, the remainder being at least one hydrocarbon solvent such as turpentine, solvent naphtha or white spirit; the wax constitutes 20-50% or 5-20% by weight of the composition in paste or liquid form respectively. Alternatively the polish is in emulsion form. Suitable waxes are hard waxes, e.g. carnauba wax or a synthetic substitute therefor, spirit bonding waxes, e.g. ceresin, beeswax or synthetic substitutes, or paraffin wax, particularly a blend or mixture of hard, spirit bonding and paraffin wax. Candelilla, montan microcrystalline and Hoechst synthetic waxes are also mentioned in Example 4. The composition may include silicones, dyes, pigments, perfumes, abrasives and anti-slip agents.
