Abstract

An arc welding protective mask is automatically tilted into position by the current flowing for the arc in the welding circuit. In the inactive position the dark mask is held above the user's head so that the view through the clear window is unhindered. In both positions the user's hands remain free for welding. The mask can be pressed from a shell of opaque plastic pivoted to a cross-shaped holder fitting over the user's head. The welding current can operate an electro-magnet which attracts an armature to overcome the string retaining force applied to the mask. The mask is thereby caused to fall in front of the user's eyes by force of gravity.
