Abstract

An electrochemical reactor, for incorporation in an installation producing titanium dioxide from ilmenite by the sulphate process, is used to reduce ferric ions contained in the soln. (A) remaining after attack on the ilmenite by conc. H2SO4. The reactor is composed of >=1 cell which contains (i) compartment through which soln. (A) can flow, contg. a cathode which consists of a non-compressed bed of electrically conducting particles in contact ith a current collector; (ii) at least one compartment through which a soln. (B) contg. H2SO4 can flow, contg. an anode, the anode and the current collector being connected respectively to the + and - poles of a continuous voltage source; (iii) an electrically insulating diaphragm between compartments (i) and (ii), made of microporous material; (iv) the means of circulating solns. (A) and (B) into their respective compartments. The reactor can be used industrially, replacing the conventional redn. method using scrap iron.
