Abstract

The electrochemical reactor is made up of a plurality of unit cells (8) mounted in series. Each of the cells (8) comprises a cylindrical insulating casing (10) divided by a microporous insulating diaphragm (11) into two coaxial compartments (12, 13), namely a central anode compartment (12) of cylindrical shape, through which passes a metal bar (14) intended to act as anode, and a peripheral cathode compartment (13) of annular shape, filled with a loosely packed bed of conductive particles (16), intended to act as cathode (15). With the anode (14) and the cathode (15) being connected to the two poles of a source of direct voltage (22), a solution of sulphuric acid is circulated through the anode compartment (12) and the ilmenite digestion liquor is circulated through the loosely packed bed in the cathode compartment (13), respectively, and this results in the reduction of the ferric iron present in this liquor. It can be incorporated into a plant for the production of titanium dioxide from ilmenite by the sulphate process. <IMAGE>
