Las cajas de cartón o las piezas iniciales según los principios de la presente invención se pueden formar de materiales tales como cartón. Por lo tanto, si se expone al agua u otros líquidos durante periodos prolongados de tiempo, la caja de cartón puede permitir el paso de líquido a través de las superficies de caja de cartón humedecidas, debido a la permeabilidad parcial del material de la caja de cartón. En esta descripción, el término "impermeable" se utiliza en general para definir una sección de una caja de cartón que está formada de una sección continua de material o de una sección sin ninguna costura pegada a través de la cual se pueda filtrar líquido o material de partículas finas, y por lo tanto el término "impermeable" abarca cajas de cartón que pueden pasar a ser parcialmente permeables al agua con el tiempo.
Las piezas iniciales según la presente invención se pueden fabricar, por ejemplo, de cartón recubierto y materiales similares. Por ejemplo, los lados interior y/o exterior de las piezas iniciales se pueden recubrir con un recubrimiento de arcilla. A continuación, el recubrimiento de arcilla se puede imprimir con información de producto, publicidad, códigos de precios y otras informaciones, o imágenes. A continuación, las piezas iniciales se pueden recubrir con un barniz para proteger cualquier información impresa en las piezas iniciales. Las piezas iniciales se podrían recubrir asimismo, por ejemplo, con una capa barrera anti-humedad, en cualquiera o en ambos lados de las piezas iniciales.
Según las realizaciones a modo de ejemplo, las piezas iniciales se pueden fabricar de cartón de un galgado tal que sea más pesado y rígido que el papel ordinario. Por ejemplo, la galga puede ser de por lo menos aproximadamente 24, pero el galgado puede ser mayor o menor de esta cantidad sin apartarse de la invención. Las piezas iniciales se podrían asimismo fabricar de otros materiales, tales como cartón, papel duro o cualquier otro material con propiedades adecuadas para permitir que el embalaje de caja de cartón funcione tal como se ha descrito en general anteriormente. La pieza inicial se pueden asimismo laminar o recubrir con uno o varios materiales de tipo lámina en paneles seleccionados o en secciones de panel seleccionadas.
Según la realización a modo de ejemplo de la presente invención, una línea de plegado puede ser una forma de debilitamiento sustancialmente lineal, aunque no necesariamente recta, que facilite el plegado a lo largo de la misma. Más específicamente, pero no con el propósito de limitar el ámbito de la presente invención, las líneas de plegado pueden incluir: una línea de perforaciones, tal como líneas formadas con una cuchilla roma de ranurado, o similar, que crean una parte aplastada en el material a lo largo de la línea de debilitamiento deseada; un corte que se extiende parcialmente en el material a lo largo de la línea de debilitamiento deseada, y/o una serie de cortes que se extienden parcialmente en el material y/o lo atraviesan por completo a lo largo de la línea de debilitamiento deseada; y diversas combinaciones de estas características. En situaciones en las que se utilicen cortes para crear una línea de plegado, habitualmente los cortes no serán demasiado extensivos de tal modo que puedan provocar que un usuario corriente considere incorrectamente que la línea de plegado es una línea de rasgado.

Las realizaciones anteriores se pueden describir teniendo uno o varios paneles adheridos conjuntamente mediante cola. Se entiende que el término "cola" abarca todo tipo de adhesivos utilizados normalmente para fijar en su posición paneles de la caja de cartón
