Abstract

La presente invención se refiere a la recuperación de cobalto a partir de materiales que contienen cobalto, en particular de baterías secundarias de iones de litio que contienen cobalto, de baterías gastadas o de su chatarra. Se divulga un proceso para la recuperación de cobalto a partir de materiales que contienen cobalto, que comprende las etapas de: proporcionar un horno convertidor, cargar en el horno formadores de escoria y uno o más de mata de cobre, mata de cobreníquel y aleación impura, e inyectar un gas oxidante para fundir la carga en condiciones oxidativas, obteniendo así un baño fundido que comprende una fase de metal en bruto, y una escoria que contiene cobalto, y separar el metal en bruto de la escoria que contiene cobalto, caracterizado por que los materiales que contienen cobalto se cargan en el horno. Este proceso es especialmente adecuado para el reciclaje de baterías secundarias de iones de litio que contienen cobalto. El cobalto se concentra en una cantidad limitada de escoria en el horno convertidor, de la que puede recuperarse económicamente, junto con otros elementos como el cobre y/o el níquel.
