Ken Inoue gefällt dasAt the CMX Connect SF chapter relaunch on Wednesday, I moderated a panel and asked the five panelists whether "community" is the right word for what we do. I got five different answers. Internal entrepreneurs, because the job is mostly navigating what other teams need. Bridges, or connective tissue between the people building a product and the people using it. Helpers, from someone who also pointed out that tech has worn the word “community” out so completely that you don't get to call your company a family and then run layoffs. Two of them landed on ecosystem, independently of each other. One had already changed their title from VP of Community to Head of Ecosystem, and described it as concentric circles: community in the middle, where the trust and the belonging actually live, then the wider network, then the ecosystem all of it sits inside. There's no one right way to think about the work we do, and I don't think that's a problem. The work has grown past the word. Nobody has settled on what replaces it, so most of us end up defining it for whatever organization we happen to be in. One of the panelists who has been doing this the longest put it this way: the job used to be about building and keeping relationships, and now it's about translating those relationships into something the business can act on. That's a different job, and I'm not sure hiring has caught up. Hopefully, we’re getting there! When I read that Rakuten is brokering Helsing's HX-2 strike drone into Japanese military trials, I did a double take. Not a prime like Mitsubishi Heavy. Not a defense startup. One of Japan's biggest consumer e-commerce and fintech brands, putting its name on defense. A few years ago that would have been unthinkable. Here is what changed. In 2009, 14% of Japanese said the Self-Defense Forces should be strengthened. In the Cabinet Office survey released this January, 45%. Opposition is in the low single digits. The public sentiment shifted and institutions are catching up: the LP side letters that kept Japanese VCs out of defense are unwinding, and a domestic drone industry is being built almost from zero. Rakuten reading that shift and acting on it is the vibe shift. James Riney and I go deep on this in the latest Build with Japan podcast: why we invested in Anduril, how Japan rebuilds a defense supply chain, and where startups fit between the primes and the ministry. Ken Inoue gefällt dasKen Inoue gefällt dasNearly 300 bills on children's online safety have been introduced across the US this year. But they almost all arrived after the damage was done. On September 10, California signed "Adam's Law". It is named after Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who died in 2025 after months of conversations with an AI chatbot. The law that carries his name makes California the first state with a comprehensive safety framework for AI companion chatbots and children: mandatory risk assessments before a chatbot is released, independent safety audits, crisis protocols, and protective settings by default for minors. Notably, the bill was publicly supported by OpenAI. This law follows the logic of a "crash test": prove the product is safe, then release it. Every other industry that touches human lives at scale already works this way. Cars pass crash tests before they reach the road, medicines go through clinical trials before they reach a pharmacy. But for some reason, digital and AI products reach billions of people, including children, with no equivalent step: they ship first, and we discover the harms later. When California passed its first chatbot law last October, it was after a death. When Brussels reached its preliminary findings on the "addictive design" of TikTok in February, then of Instagram and Facebook in July, it was after a decade of harm. Even the $17 billion Meta settlement arrived when internal research had documented the damage for years. Each time, protection came second… Regulation is necessary, but a system that only reacts will always count its casualties first. Adam's Law plants a different logic in the legal landscape: safety has to be demonstrated before release. For now, it covers one category of products, in one state. But I believe that our job, collectively, is to turn this exception into the standard for every digital and AI product: a pre-market Human Safety Scan, the crash test of the digital world. This is exactly the point I made in The Economist a few months ago here. No family should ever again need a law named after their child. Ken Inoue gefällt dasKen Inoue gefällt dasI'm still building out the system for a Japanese language school, and the next feature is tuition payment management. For anything that demands accounting-level accuracy, you can't hand the work entirely to AI. I'm happy to automate with AI where it helps, but a human approval step is non-negotiable. (Ideally I'd connect directly to bank account data via API, but that's for another day.) The school I'm helping has plenty of cases that need flexible handling: families paying for siblings in one lump sum, students who enroll mid-year and need tuition prorated by number of classes, donations bundled into a tuition payment. That's not a set of judgment calls I'm comfortable leaving to a model. So I defined explicit logic instead. The first month's amount is calculated from the date of the student's first class, and the system tracks receivables against payments in a way that's fully predictable and auditable. The payment recognition requires operator human's explicit approval. The more I build, the more convinced I am of this: for most real-world use cases, using AI to build deterministic rules and systems beats embedding AI inside the system. The core skill in applying AI today is managing its probabilistic behavior, and deciding where it shouldn't be in the loop at all. #AI #VibeCoding #Automation #Productivity

Ken Inoue gefällt dasKen Inoue gefällt dasA little late, but I really enjoyed speaking on a women in VC panel at Japan Innovation Campus in Palo Alto earlier this month, where four Japanese women working in venture capital in the Bay Area shared our career paths, what working in VC actually looks like, and some of the challenges and opportunities we have experienced in the industry. I shared my own journey into venture, what I have learned along the way, and some of the realities of building a career in this space. One thing I have personally found really valuable in venture is having a community of other women investors around me. Through communities like All Raise and Global Women in VC, I have learned so much from candid conversations about investing, fundraising , career decisions and all the other things. That is also what made this event special. I enjoyed sharing some of my own experience, but I also learned a lot from the fellow panelists Yoko Masuda Naoko Hoshiya Megumi Makino and from the questions and conversations with everyone who joined us. I was also really glad to see allies in the room. It was encouraging to see people across the ecosystem show up with genuine curiosity and support. Thank you JWIBA - Japanese Women’s Initiative in the Bay Area for bringing everyone together, and thank you to everyone who came out to Palo Alto! Ken Inoue gefällt dasKen Inoue gefällt das14.4 billion devices around the world are listening to us right now: phones, speakers, laptops, earbuds, watches… And soon, a new generation of AI wearables will record everything, all the time. Most of us have stopped even noticing that. The issue with those recordings is that they never disappear. They become datasets used to train AI models, profile behavior, and shape what we buy and what we believe. A short sample of our voice is already enough to reveal a surprising amount about us. In March 2026, a Harvard physics graduate named Aida Baradari launched Spectre I, a device that promises to make the conversations around you unintelligible to any nearby microphone. Her announcement drew +4.5 million views in 24h! 👏 Her device is still in development, and security researchers have questioned whether it can really do what it claims. But the number that matters is those 4.5 million views. They tell us how many people feel watched, recorded, and quietly uneasy about it. But this solution comes at a cost: Spectre I costs $1,199. That is the price of a laptop, to buy back something we used to have for free: the ability to talk to another person without it being captured and turned into data. And even if the device works perfectly, it only protects the person who can afford it. Everyone else will stay exposed. In Big Tech, we have seen this pattern before: the burden of protection is placed on the individual, one purchase at a time, against a system that was designed to prey on us. This is where I think we need to be honest with ourselves. The surveillance economy was never a surprising accident, or a glitch we can each patch on our own. It has always been a design choice, built into the business model of the technology we use every day. To regain our freedom, we need a pre-market human safety scan: a sort of crash test before market release to make sure that digital and AI products don’t contain predatory design. Aida Baradari's device is a great idea and a powerful signal: people no longer want to live in a world of constant listening, that instinct is right. But now, our job is to build a world where no one needs to buy a shield in the first place 🙌

We hosted NAURA management during China AI Tour on Sep 9th in Beijing. Key discussions focused on (1) Semi capex spending trend, (2) GM trend, and (3) new tools expansion. Overall, management is positive on the growing spending from memory and advanced logic clients this year, outperforming growth of mature logic, along with rising penetration of local SPE tools to support company's order growth. Mgmt. expects to see sustainable order growth in 2027E, supported by clients' accelerated capacity expansion in China market to fulfill rising demand. Despite near-term pressures on upstream components supply, management expects to see gradual ease of the supply constraint through partnership with local and overseas suppliers to verify with clients.
