あんまり得した気分は無い
使いやすさいのは間違いなく。しかし、この値段でちょっと疑問に思われます。前の値段だと、絶対にお得だったけれど、今回は別に現金で新幹線もしくは飛行機の切符を買えばよかったと。

Thank you very much for contacting us.
The Shinkansen and the limited express trains have reserved (“shitei-seki”) and non-reserved (“jiyu-seki”) seats. In principle the reserved seats are a little more expensive, but they can be booked at no extra cost with the Japan Rail Pass.
Booking is not an obligation, and a non-reserved seat can be occupied by showing your Japan Rail Pass. However, you can easily reserve a seat without any additional charges by visiting a JR Travel Service Center or a JR Ticket Office (“midori no madoguchi”) before taking the train. Simply show your Japan Rail Pass, and you can get a reserved seat ticket. You can therefore travel in seats next to friends who don't have a Japan Rail Pass.
It is possible to reserve seats:
- at a ticket vending machine
- at a JR Ticket Office (in any large JR station) also called “midori no madoguchi”
Note that you cannot make seat reservations online with a JR Pass purchased overseas via exchange order.
If you don't reserve a seat, you can still easily go through the ticket gates with your exchanged Japan Rail Pass. Once on the platform look for non reserve coaches which are usually from 1 - 6.
Local commuter trains can be extremely busy at the start and end of the day. Long distance trains are also very busy during holiday periods*. Given the high frequency of trains, it's often preferable to wait for the next one, just a few minutes later.
