A few weeks ago, a can of baked beans purchased in Sainsbury's a few days prior, exploded in my kitchen cupboard. The tin was not bulging or dented. The top came off with such force and noise, the cupboard and other contents were covered in baked beans and sauce. A frightening experience. When I placed the can in the sink, the remaining contents were fizzing. I checked Google and the advice was to discard the tin immediately and clean/disinfect the cupboard and other tins as the baked beans were likely contaminated with dangerous bacteria including botulism! This I did. I emailed Sainsbury's customer services. My main concern was that had this happened on the shelf in store, shoppers could have been sprayed by this bacteria laden gunk. Their initial response was that without the can, contents and proof of purchase, they could do nothing. I didn't have any of those things. I didn't make a fuss and put it down to an unfortunate experience. However, it was escalated to a different department who contacted me. They explained what could have happened, a microscopic manufacturing defect etc. They were very apologetic and kind. They then sent me a £50 voucher which I certainly didn't expect. I noticed that the product in question disappeared from the shelves soon after. I'm guessing there was a manufacturing issue. I haven't always been complimentary about Sainsbury's but on this occasion, eventually, it was sorted in a professional way and I was left feeling confident after their explanation. Thanks Sainsbury's.
