If you need a valid tax receipt or invoice for business accounting and tax purposes, avoid using Hotels.com.
When accommodation is prepaid through Hotels.com, getting a legally valid receipt is impossible.
- The hotel cannot issue a receipt: Because payment was collected directly by Hotels.com / Expedia Group, the hotel has no record of the merchant transaction and refuses to issue an invoice or tax receipt for funds they did not collect.
- Hotels.com refuses to issue a receipt. Customer support repeatedly sends a simple booking itinerary. An itinerary is a booking confirmation, not a legally valid invoice or tax receipt, making it unacceptable for corporate accounting and tax authorities.
- Violation of EU tax and invoicing rules: Under the EU VAT Directive (2006/112/EC) and national accounting laws, the entity collecting the payment must provide a proper invoice and/or tax receipt. Hotels.com ignores this statutory duty entirely.
- Unprofessional support and dead phone numbers. Support agents repeatedly shift blame to third parties, offer out-of-service phone numbers, direct customers to non-EU contacts, and abruptly terminate chat sessions without resolving the issue.
