Surge Protection plan a scam when you actually need it

Been paying for surge protection for years to Duke. Than lighting hit near my home, destroyed ceiling lights, air conditioner, garage motor, motorized bed, internet router and modem, and 5 $75 each breakers.

I called to make a claim and they said they only cover compressor on major appliances. So in other words thanks for your money and our surge protector doesn't work, and we don't really cover you.

Poor Experience

I used Duke for roughly six years in Florida through my apartment Complex, and their slew of predatory tactics, poor customer service, and inability to resolve issues they created persisted over the entire six year duration. Ultimately, upon my move out scheduled for July 22, 2026, I placed a “cancel service request” on both, the Duke app and website, prior to July 22 to ensure I would not be charged after I was no longer living in the apartment. After first placing the request on the app, I received a prompt stating a request had already been placed for 2022- knowing I had not yet placed the request, and the current year was 2026, I recognized this as an error and attempted to place the request on Duke’s website as well (in addition to the app). I received the same prompt stating a request had already been placed, and so next called Duke’s customer service, where I was kept on hold for over ten minutes and the robot ultimately referred me back to Duke’s website. Assuming the stop service request had been placed since I placed it numerous times through Duke’s website and application, and received a response stating a stop service request was received, I assumed I had stopped my service. However, come August, I’ve been charged through August 2. While the cost is minor, it’s the principle of the issue that has been troubling - after two hours on the phone with Duke support, the answer I was given was that, because their system did not receive my stop service requests (despite that their platforms are the party that malfunctioned), I simply owe the money.

Long story short, make sure you reach a human from Duke when you want to stop service, especially if their platforms are “malfunctioning.” Their predatory tactics and poor technology are not on your side as a tenant, so cover all your bases to protect your finances!

Absolutely terrible…

Absolutely terrible that this company must be relied upon so much, they believe they have a perpetual right to keep charging customers more while not being able to react to a storm in a timely manner.

They can say whatever they want but the winds have long died down and THEY should be prepared for storms worse than this. I cannot sleep at all and this will compound into my work but this falls on me and will not be reflected one bit in my bill...

I absolutely despise that they must be relied upon, I want to live off the grid fully after this BS.

Duke Energy has to be the worst…

Duke Energy has to be the worst company. Worst company I have ever had to deal with their prices are ridiculous. Who’s getting the money because I have had progress energy I have had Tampa electric. I have had Orlando utilities commission in Duke by far is disgusting. Somebody is pocketing money there’s no way in the hell I should be living in a one bedroom apartment paying $329 a month for a light bill. Then not even that my bill was due on the 31st and they put a late notice as of the second. They are so disgusting. I’ve never let my bill go past due or to the next month. They’re greedy, greedy, greedy, greedy.

I called in related to a stop request I…

I called in related to a stop request I received notification about but did not place. After on the phone 30 minutes transferred 3 times I was on a line with internet company that wasn’t Duke they transferred me to. Unrelated to my request, now I’m back on the line with another agent who refused supervisor. I requested 6-10 times and she kept delaying it and then proceeded to not remember what my call was about I explained it 3 times to her. As well she could not find my account. Finally got transferred and then stayed on the line 5+ waiting for someone to pick up. Absolutely ridiculous and the fact they have so much control over this area in NC is beyond wild to me. So shitty customer service.

Zero stars!

Zero stars!! This company is such a scam it’s so sad. Started electric here and had to pay a deposit of $700 which is already absurd!! Then find out when we’re moving and go to transfer the electric from the old house to the new house it’s another $400 deposit!!! the SAME company. Are you kidding me?? She said oh we’re ending your account and starting a new account because it’s a new address. Uh what?!? SCAM!!! So be ready to pay another million dollar deposit to transfer your electricity through the same company because they decide to end your account every time and make you a new one like your a new costumer. Absolute joke and Florida needs to do better.

I called in to sign up for new service…

I called in to sign up for new service and I know I was talking to an AI voice agent. I even asked it if it was AI and it was trained to lie, telling me it wasn't. I've been in the industry for years and have extensive knowledge in this area. Furthermore, I was then directed to a promotions representative from what sounded like another country and after repeating myself four times that I was not interested, I was forced to hang up because this person would not stop trying to sell me additional products. Duke, you need to do better. That was a horrible customer service experience and you shouldn't be putting your customers, especially new customers, through that kind of sci-fi experience.

GREEDY PIGS…

I paid a deposit that is more than my average bill when I purchased my house over a year ago. I have never had a disconnect, always pay my bill and have great credit but now you want another deposit amount of almost $700 and you said "it's ok, we will give it back to you in 9 months with 2% interest"

You are a monopoly that is taking advantage of people that do not have an option to use another provider.

Absolutely GREEDY PIGS!!!
I hope you go out of business!

I am 74 years of age and live alone

I am 74 years of age and live alone. I recently experienced power outages. A young man with the company came out and shared with my son that the transformer was bad and need to be replaced. Upon calling in and getting Charlie the rep on the phone he was patient, kind and very professional without being overwhelming user friendly and did an awesome job reassuring me that the engineering dept would be addressing my concerns. This young man was so respectful and even took the time to allow my son to join in to give important details. I know you get a lot of negativity and toxicity when you work in customer service but this one is a keep. Thank you Charlie. Please let this go forward and he be recognized for his awesome service vv

I called unprofessional Duke Energy about what I had to paid and now Duke is sayting they changed the records on June 23, 2026, stating they issue 2 payements when they refused to even issue 1 payment back. Thomasville

Half the town I live in, in north Carolina is out of power right now. Hottest day of the year and during the celebration of the 250th birthday of our country. Pathetic. I guarantee it's because more than half of NC population showed up to dispute there price rise due to data centers that have nothing to do with regular ppl. Hate duke energy!

I put my elderly mom on auto reduction…

I put my elderly mom on auto reduction from her bank account. So my mom had passed and one day I was at her place and her lights went out. So I called Duke up and I said my mom is on auto pay for about a year. They said for some reason it didn't go through. My mom had the funds, believe me. So the woman I'm dealing with said you're responsible for it. And if you don't pay it we'll shut your electricity at your house. So naturally I paid it. This was 4 years ago and I'm still burning up over it.
