I had used an account on here for scam…

I had used an account on here for scam baiting. I know, probably not the wisest idea ever, but not illegal by any means. At one point, I sent a similar email to several different scammers, and mailfence flagged THAT as suspicious. They shut down my account. When I tried to reactivate my account, the demanded that I upgrade to an exorbitantly priced subscription package in order to have my email revived. What the hell?! Just because I had a free account, I can't get it back? Thank goodness I didn't have anything important in there! They could do this to anyone for any reason! They're the real scammers!!!!!

We understand why this experience was frustrating, especially if you lost access unexpectedly. Mailfence may restrict accounts when activity triggers our abuse or security protections, regardless of whether the messages were intended for scam baiting. Account recovery options can also depend on the circumstances and subscription status. We’re sorry this left you with a negative impression, and we recommend contacting our support team so they can review the specific case.

Mailfence is a fraud

What's the point of using an email service if no emails arrive? That is the definitive conclusion after trying to bear with/use this service for over a year now. Useless and actually harmful if you happen to count on it for even the most basic service of *cough* RECEIVING emails. Shameful that such a fraud is allowed to exist. Waste of time.

We’re sorry to hear about your experience. Not receiving expected emails is understandably frustrating, especially when you rely on an email service for essential communications. This isn’t the experience we want for our users. Delivery issues can have different causes, and we’d like to investigate what happened. Please contact our support team with a few examples of missing messages so we can look into the issue.

Useless

Useless. Blocks emails from British Gas with link to set up account. They don’t go in the spam folder, they just never arrive. You cannot change the filters unless you upgrade to a paid account. Given how many companies send these stupid click the link emails this is not helpful.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback, and we're sorry for the frustration.

When you wrote to our support team on 21 July we replied the same day, pointed you to our troubleshooting article, and asked for the exact date, time and sender address of one of the missing emails so we could trace it in our delivery logs. We haven't had a reply, which is why the matter is still open on our side — the offer stands, and we would be glad to investigate as soon as you send us those details.

One clarification that may help in the meantime: incoming messages can be refused when the sending domain does not meet current anti-spam standards (SPF, DKIM, DMARC). That configuration is controlled by the sender, not by us.

We're a small team and we do read every message — just reply to our email and we'll pick it up from there.

Kind regards,
The Mailfence team

Lack of transparency in pricing

We were looking for an EU alternative for our mail services. After reviewing the pricing & functionalities sheet, we decided to pick Mailfence. But once we started the migration, we were faced with the fact that for each emailaddress you would need a subscription (resulting in twice as high costs as before). At least, if you want to use a third party email client rather than webbased mail. To me this seems like a basic functionality that shouldn't come at extra (hidden) costs. The lack of transparency in pricing is the reason we left again. Also, they charge for a full-year right away, and I couldn't get any money back for the remaining 11 months that I am not using their service.

Hi,

A bit of context that may help others reading this. Access through a third-party email client (IMAP/POP/SMTP, plus ActiveSync) is a paid feature at Mailfence, available from our Entry plan upward. Our Free and Base tiers are built around our webmail and mobile apps, while IMAP/POP/SMTP, ActiveSync and custom domains unlock at Entry. Because the service is priced per mailbox, as with most business email providers, each address that needs client access does require its own plan. The full feature-by-tier breakdown is published on our pricing page and in our knowledge base, and we'd sincerely welcome your suggestions on how to make the IMAP detail more visible during evaluation, as we never want it to feel like a surprise.

It may also help to know that charging for third-party client access is the norm among privacy-focused providers rather than a Mailfence quirk. Proton Mail offers no native IMAP at all and requires a separate paid Bridge app, and Tuta supports neither IMAP nor POP on any plan, leaving you tied to its own apps. Mailfence gives you native IMAP/POP/SMTP with no bridge, starting from our Entry tier.

On the practical side: if only some of your users needed client access, the Entry plan's admin panel lets one manager oversee up to five accounts, and webmail-only users could have stayed on a lower-cost tier. We currently bill annually, for Pro half-yearly, rather than monthly, and as set out in our terms, subscriptions aren't refunded because the free plan lets you trial most beforehand. Our support is just an email away in case of uncertainty regarding pricing.

Thanks again for giving Mailfence a try, and for the honest review.

Same experience as other users have…

Same experience as other users have reported. I tried to sign up, entered the security code provided (for which I had to hand over another email address) then got a "declined" message telling me four reasons why my application may have been rejected, none of which were correct or relevant. On the face of it, it seems to be a mechnanism to gather email addresses.

We’re sorry to hear about your experience and understand how frustrating that must have been.

We’d like to reassure you that Mailfence does not collect email addresses for any purpose other than providing and securing access to our service. The verification step you encountered is part of our security and anti-abuse measures, which help us protect users from automated sign-ups and malicious activity. In some cases, registrations may be declined if certain risk signals are triggered, even if the reason is not immediately clear.

That said, this is not the experience we want for legitimate users. We would be happy to look into your specific case and help you complete your registration.

Please feel free to contact our support team with details of what happened, and we’ll do our best to assist you promptly.

Secure mail

I have been a customer for 4 years and the customer service has never been good but my account was coming up for renewal and my card had changed
So I tried to renew but it would not allow me to renew at the rate I have always paid £40 a year’
They only would renew me at £100 a year
I do not use any of there extra services and there service is awful
Now they will not reply even though I have paid to receive basic mail.
There complaint website is down
And as a business I am receiving only spam,
I believe Mailfence is secure but if a hacker wants to be a menace they can redirect mail and when I tried on many occasions to contact support I had twenty redirects and never got to talk to support until I used another mail server
When I did this I they sorted out my problems
So my review has changed for the better I
May be making hacking a criminal offence with serious jail time the web would be a better place

Very Poor. Even for a paying customer. Do not use them

Even for a paying customer, this is poor service.

They constantly classify certain emails as spam, even when you add the address to your private whitelist. I’ve contacted their support team three times about this, but they refuse to do anything about it. Even emails from my bank are marked as spam — again, the address is in my whitelist — yet they still decide it’s spam, so I have to keep checking my junk folder.

I do not recommend them. They are not reliable.

UPDATE: After receiving a reply to this review, I did as they asked and sent it to their support again, but I never received an answer back. Even more emails were classed as spam, even PayPal! and other major companies, even though they were all whitelisted. I have stopped using MailFence and cannot recommend it. Do NOT use this company; the service is EXTREMELY poor. I have since changed to another company, and now I receive my mails correctly in the correct folders

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re genuinely sorry to hear about your experience — especially as a paying customer. We understand how frustrating it is to find important emails, particularly from your bank, being delivered to spam despite being added to your private whitelist.

Spam filtering is designed to protect users from harmful or fraudulent messages, but it should never feel like it’s working against you. In some cases, additional filtering layers (such as server-level reputation checks or authentication failures like SPF/DKIM/DMARC issues on the sender’s side) can override personal whitelist settings. That said, we completely understand that this doesn’t make the experience any less frustrating.

It’s also concerning to hear that you feel your previous support requests were not properly addressed. That is not the level of service we aim to provide. We would truly appreciate the opportunity to review your case again in detail and investigate why the whitelist rule is not behaving as expected.

Please reach out to us directly at support@mailfence.com with your account details and reference this review, and we will escalate the matter to our technical team for a thorough review.

We value your trust and would like the chance to restore your confidence in our service.

Kind regards,
Mailfence Team

mailfence.com: Ignore their boilerplate, use their e-mail and it works!

A lot of times their software is shocking. But persevere and they will make it work.

I could not get my account to work no matter what I did - help, AI chat, "documentation" (meaning impersonal help based on fixed Q & A) and e-mail. Their boilerplate e-mail response said they don't answer e-mail from free subscribers ("rarely" if they have staff available). '

I couldn't do anything with that so I ignored it. If it wouldn't have worked, I would have cancelled the account.

But, surprise, surprise, the next day, they sent an e-mail asking for some simple information like name, e-mail address I want to use, username, etc. Then, the day after I answered that, they sent an e-mail to tell me that they had set up my account and given me a temporary password to get into it. I used that password and everything worked perfectly!

mailfence.com is really free, it is easy to use, it is secure and, if you ignore their boilerplate and just use their e-mail address, you can get good results.

Something has gone off the rails at Mailfence

I've been a paying customer of Mailfence for years. Recently, they froze my account, said it is scheduled for deletion and are turning away emails. They further state that my account can only be unfrozen by an intervention from user support. I have emailed sales, support and abuse at Mailfence 2 times each and have yet to receive a reply or any information. It is frustrating and VERY disappointing. It seems like extortion or a scam. Up until very recently, things have been fine. Now...not so much!

Hello,

Thank you for raising your concerns. We understand how disruptive it can be to experience an unexpected account authentication block

To clarify the situation:

Your Mailfence account was scheduled for renewal on January 17. Beginning December 27 of last year, multiple automated reminders were sent requesting an update to your payment information, as the credit card on file could not be charged. Unfortunately, we did not receive a response to these reminders prior to the renewal date.

As a result, the account was automatically blocked on January 19 in accordance with our billing policy. You contacted us on Friday, January 30, and our support team responded on the next business day, Monday.

We would like to stress that this was a standard billing-related suspension, not a permanent deletion, and there was no intent to withhold service unfairly. That said, we recognize that the interruption and the timing of the response were frustrating, and we regret the inconvenience this caused.

We are continuously working to improve how we communicate and handle billing-related account restrictions, particularly for long-standing customers. Your feedback is valuable in helping us improve these processes.

If you have any remaining questions or need further assistance, our support team will be happy to help.

Kind regards,
Mailfence Support Team

Worth the small amount of work.

I had a little bit of trouble actually getting an email address from Mailfence. There were some anti-phishing and anti-malicious issues that kept me from getting an email initially. But I can totally see why they would want to be careful. Once I emailed their support people, I was contacted in less than 24 hours. I sent them back some particulars. They got me set up and I was emailing people my new address by the next day. For the added security, I felt that a day to set it up was more than reasonable. The people that helped me were courteous and expedient. Good job.

Consistently beats the competition

I have been using this service for over a decade. I have tried all the rest and have not found a good reason to change. It has all the pieces, is well coordinated, and very security focused - I do not worry about the provider monetizing my content or hackers. Customer service is very quick and knowledgeable, focused on solving the problem immediately. The owners are working in the background to continue to improve the service. I like that it is a smaller company - less interesting to hackers and fewer internal confusions. I do not use VPNs and have no issues access it from the web.

Made in Belgium!

I wanted to leave Gmail and any other “Made in the USA” providers and find a serious player in Europe. Mailfence is an excellent provider “Made in Belgium” email service focused on privacy at an acceptable price. I highly recommend it. I have been a customer for four years and am generally happy with my experience. After much hesitation, I decided to switch to ProtonMail because the webmail service has not evolved much and unfortunately lags behind the competition in terms of features (ProtonMail, Tutanota, Infomaniak Ksuite, etc.). One last disappointment: I wanted to cancel a few days before the end of my subscription period, but unfortunately, the automatic renewal takes payment 15 days before the end. I asked their support team for a refund as I wanted to cancel my subscription, but they refused, so I paid for a whole year for nothing. That said, I still consider Mailfence to be an excellent alternative to Gmail if you want to de-Google yourself.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed and balanced review, and for supporting European, privacy-focused email providers. We’re genuinely happy to read that you valued Mailfence as a “Made in Belgium” alternative to U.S.-based services and that privacy, transparency, and pricing met your expectations overall.

We also fully understand your decision to explore other solutions as your needs evolved. We continuously work on improvements based on user input and market developments and are working on a completely revamped webinterface.

Regarding the subscription renewal, we’re sorry for the frustration this caused. As noted in our terms, renewals are processed 15 days before the end of the subscription period to ensure uninterrupted service. While this policy limits our ability to issue refunds once renewal has occurred, we understand how disappointing this can feel when your intention was to cancel shortly beforehand. Your feedback helps us reflect on how we communicate these timelines more clearly.

We truly appreciate your recommendation and your honest assessment. We wish you all the best moving forward and remain grateful for the trust you placed in Mailfence during your time with us.
