chromium-bin: ungoogled-chromium-portablelinux 155.0.8059.84 on both arches (interim; replaces #928) - #960
Conversation
….84-1 (both arches, interim) Both legs move to the ungoogled-chromium-portablelinux release tarballs: a Stable-branch, redistributable (BSD-3) Chromium build on x86_64 and arm64. Replaces the dead Playwright arm64 leg (last build r1243) and the amd64 main-branch snapshot, so the package is back on Chromium Stable (153.0.8010.12 -> 155.0.8059.84). Interface kept: /bin/chromium, the Playwright registry dir chromium-1243/, runtime_deps unchanged (DT_NEEDED of chrome and chromedriver is covered on both arches). Qt shims dropped; Widevine guard; chromedriver ships inside the browser dir. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…erprise policy (CVE-2026-111943) New package chromium-policies installs /etc/chromium/policies/managed/ca-distrusted-certificates.json, a CADistrustedCertificates policy (Chrome 132+, Linux) listing the 8 compromised eMudhra intermediate keys and emSign ECC Root CA - G3. Chromium matches by SPKI, so one certificate per key covers the emSign copy, the Sectigo AAA cross-sign and the ECDSA-malleated twins. build.sh fails unless the file holds exactly those 9 keys, and five negative controls prove the check can fail. chromium-bin takes it as a runtime dep; versions and sources unchanged. chromium-headless-shell-bin cannot read platform policy (no loader since Chromium ~150; the 155 binary has no policy path or policy name), so it only gets a comment documenting the gap. A CI job checks every policy key against the `spki` lines of packages/ca-certificates/distrust.txt; it warns until #948 lands that file. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…-ungoogled Keeps chromium-bin's chromium-policies runtime dep and policy_installed test on the ungoogled source; the ungoogled binary reads /etc/chromium/policies and contains CADistrustedCertificates. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Approving with nits. Verified by computation: both release tarballs downloaded and hashed; the sha256 literals match and equal GitHub's asset digests (x86_64 156,849,392 B, arm64 142,033,316 B). Each tarball has one top-level dir with chrome, chromedriver, the runtime files and the two Qt shims; no Widevine, no chrome-sandbox. Parsed the x86_64 dynamic sections of chrome, chromedriver and the bundled .sos: NEEDED set matches the PR body, no RPATH/RUNPATH, max GLIBC_2.25, every library maps to an existing runtime dep. Both arch binaries contain /etc/chromium/policies and CADistrustedCertificates. Upstream's flags.linux.gn at the tag sets proprietary_codecs=true ffmpeg_branding="Chrome". All #961-owned files on this head are byte-identical to #961's head.
Flag for the record
- H.264/AAC decoders are new for chromium-bin: the snapshot and Playwright builds shipped with
proprietary_codecs=false. Approving on the owner's call; noting it here so the licensing question is traceable.
Should fix
- CI evidence: in
minimal-check, chromium-bin's standalone tests and missing-runtime_deps checks show Skip, and the 48sminimal buildcheck has no log. The body leaves amd64 to CI, so the amd64 build and all five tests may never have run. Attach buildbot output for both arches before merge. - Merge order: simulated squash of #961 onto main then merge into this head conflicts in
packages/chromium-bin/build.ncl(tests block). Keeping this side resolves it with onepolicy_installedtest and onechromium-policiesdep. Update-branch will not do it; say in the body that it needs a local merge. build.ncl:196cites pkgmgr-rs#825 as the tracker for moving off themicrosoft/playwrightprovenance; #825 closed 2026-10-12 and covered lifecycle bounds. Open a new tracker and cite it.
Nits
build.sh:48Widevine guard pipesfindintogrep -qunder pipefail; a SIGPIPE on find makes the condition false and the guard passes.if [ -n "$(find "$SRC" -iname '*widevine*' -print -quit)" ]removes the race.- The release URL is written out four times (build_deps and binary_from, both arches); one per-arch
letkeeps them from drifting. - The tarball's
chrome-wrapperdev script is shipped but never called; drop it with the Qt shims.
Review follow-ups (mitodrummer): - build.sh: the Widevine guard tests `find -print -quit` output instead of piping find into grep -q, which under pipefail could pass the guard on a SIGPIPE. Drop upstream's unused `chrome-wrapper` script with the Qt shims (layout_check asserts it is gone). - build.ncl: one per-arch `release_url` let feeds both the Source and `binary_from` (it was written out four times). - build.ncl: the provenance comment cites gominimal/pkgmgr-rs#1029 (re-identify off microsoft/playwright, after a supply-chain cpe_remap) instead of #825, which closed and covered lifecycle bounds. Set persist-credentials: false on the checkout step.
actions/checkout stores the GITHUB_TOKEN in the local git config by default. This job only runs a read-only Python script and does not push or fetch again. The token does not need to stay on disk. The top-level permissions: contents: read block limits the token's scope. Disabling persistence removes the remaining exposure. It also clears the zizmor artipacked warning.

Resolved to exactly main + 226374a (verified identical to a cherry-pick of 226374a onto origin/main): chromium-bin/build.ncl is main's (ungoogled, #960); the checker, workflow, chromium-policies and the headless-shell comment carry 226374a's changes. Moves
chromium-binon both arches to ungoogled-chromium-portablelinux release tarballs, at 155.0.8059.84 (release155.0.8059.84-1). This replaces #928 (Chrome for Testing), which will be closed in favour of this PR.Decision
This is an interim source. Bryan decided it on 2026-10-20: it "isn't what people will want long-term, but gets us somewhere interim". The long-term options stay open: a source build (pkgmgr-rs#681), or Debian's
.debs as plan B.Why
chromium-binships 153.0.8010.12 and has been stuck there:chromium-browser-snapshots. That bucket only builds main-branch positions, never a Stable-branch cherry-pick. The amd64 binary was therefore older code than thebrowser_versionit carried, and the scanner under-reported amd64.Moving to 155.0.8059.84 brings in the Chrome 154 and 155 Stable security fixes on both arches. It also ends the amd64 trunk-snapshot problem: both legs are now built from the 155 release tag itself.

What changes for users
ungoogled-chromium removes Google service integration:

chrome://credits). Redistributable, so it is cache-served as usual. CfT is different: it is Google-branded under the Chrome ToS and ships a proprietary Widevine CDM, which is why chromium-bin: source from Chrome for Testing Stable 155.0.8059.84 (both arches) — licensing review needed #928 needed a denylist entry and a licensing call.license_spdxstaysBSD-3-Clause.build.shfails the build if a Widevine file ever appears, andlayout_checkasserts that none was shipped.proprietary_codecs=true ffmpeg_branding="Chrome", so the bundled ffmpeg includes H.264/AAC decoders. So do Debian's, the snap's and Arch's builds. Copyright allows redistribution; patent licensing for those codecs is a separate question and may be worth a one-line legal check.Interface: unchanged

This branch merges #961's branch rather than recreating the file, and it keeps #961'schromium-policiesruntime dep andpolicy_installedtest on the ungoogled recipe. The resolver chooses its source from the shape of the build.ncl URLs. The companion pkgmgr-rs PR teaches it this shape: GitHub releases of ungoogled-chromium-portablelinux, tags
<version>-<rev>, proposed only when both arch tarballs are attached, with a revision-only bump (-2) counted as an update. This PR doesn't depend on that PR being deployed to build. Until it is deployed, the old resolver reports chromium-bin as an unknown shape (degraded) instead of proposing anything.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
