Summary

Builds OpenJDK from source, starting from a Java toolchain that needs no JDK: jikes (a C++ Java compiler), GNU Classpath and JamVM. 27 package directories, 119 files; packages/jdk is untouched in this PR, so nothing downstream changes until a follow-up flips it to the last rung.

jikes-1.22 → classpath-0.93 → jamvm-1.5.1 → ecj-bootstrap-3.2.2 → classpath-0.99 → classpath-devel → jamvm-2.0.0 → ecj4-bootstrap-4.2.1
  → icedtea-7 → icedtea-8 → openjdk-9 → 10 → 11 → … → 25

Every Source is already in gs://minimal-staging-archives/.

What to look at

  1. The root trio (jikes-1.22, classpath-0.93, jamvm-1.5.1): 2000s-era C/C++/Java on gcc 14. The C wrapper carries the standard-mode and implicit-declaration flags; JamVM's gate runs the DESTDIR-installed binary with an explicit boot classpath because its compiled-in one names the final prefix.
  2. icedtea-7 / icedtea-8: the bridge from Classpath-era tools to OpenJDK proper.
  3. openjdk-9 … openjdk-25: generated from one template (docs/jvm-ladder/gen-jvm.py in minimermetic), each booted by the previous rung. Six upstream reproducibility fixes are backported as patches where the rung's version predates them (module hashes JDK-8243666, module descriptor hashes JDK-8275509/JDK-8290041, and related), so the outputs are byte-stable.

Reproducibility

Seal 7 (2026-09-23, two cold rounds on separate lab VMs): 28/28 artifacts byte-identical, including every OpenJDK rung.

Sandbox

The root trio (jikes, classpath-0.93, jamvm-1.5.1, plus the zip and fastjar helpers, which this PR adds) built and signed in the Confidential Space sandbox. The other rungs have not had a sandbox round yet; that waits on the builder's TPM recovery.

Merge order

This lands after #825, which switches the amd64 bootstrap chain off (#864). While it's off, gcc-15.2.0-glibc, binutils-2.46-glibc and glibc-bedrock-2.42 are empty stubs on amd64, so this ladder's root rungs must take sealed tarballs of those three, the same way go and rustc-1.98.1 do. That wiring is still to be added here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added package builds for OpenJDK versions 7 through 25, along with Java bootstrap tools including Ant, GNU Classpath, ECJ, JamVM, and Jikes.
    • Added suppor 8000 ting libraries and utilities, including GIF, X11 session and display libraries, Fastjar, and ZIP.
    • OpenJDK desktop support now includes Xcursor-based cursor handling.
  • Improvements
    • Java package builds include checks that verify the compiler and runtime can build and run programs for their respective Java versions.
    • Currency data generation continues when cutover dates are unusually distant, reporting a note instead of stopping with an error.

…ea, openjdk-9..25)

Clean re-cut of bryan/jvm-ladder onto main d0b0026: only the ladder package
directories, none of the stale pre-#667 chain that branch carried.

The new bootstrap JDK rungs do not change existing downstream JDK packages. Some intermediate rungs may produce a jlink that rejects its own modules, and their CDS classlist ordering or AWT runtime dependencies may be wrong. Fix these before the ladder feeds the user-facing JDK packages.

The clean re-cut carried only the rung directories; these eight are imported by
classpath, ecj4-bootstrap, icedtea and the openjdk rungs and were left on the
test branch. Sources are all mirrored in the staging bucket.

minimal's imports checker requires a bare-word import alias to equal the folder it
imports; dashed aliases follow the ghc-9-6-7 convention (dots become dashes).
Variable references only; record keys and strings are unchanged.

giflib: build the library targets only; `all` also builds the utilities and runs
doc/ through ImageMagick's convert, which
10BC8
 the sandbox does not have.
fastjar: the bundled 2008 config.guess/config.sub predate aarch64, so the modern
GNU pair comes in as Sources (as libtecla does); zlib was an undeclared dependency.

Both verified with a bare PATH on amd64 and arm64 lab VMs.

unix/configure finds bzlib.h (bzip2 rides in through base at build time) and links
-lbz2, so the binary needs libbz2.so.1.0 wherever it runs; classpath-0.93's sandbox
had no bzip2 and `zip -r glibj.zip` failed to load.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
None of the rungs declared any. The lab VM is one filesystem, the sandbox is not:
icedtea-7's configure ran classpath-devel's javah wrapper, which execs
/usr/lib/jamvm-1.5.1/bin/jamvm, in a closure without jamvm-1.5.1. Each rung now
names what its installed files exec or load: the VMs their class library and libz
(libffi for jamvm-2.0.0), the Classpath tool wrappers and ecj javac wrappers their VM
and class library, the JDKs libz.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
OpenJDK's freetype_versioncheck link line carries its own -Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib; with
the wrapper's flags appended after it, /usr/lib came first in RPATH and the sysroot's
ld.so loaded the system libc.so.6 (symbol lookup error: __pointer_chk_guard,
GLIBC_PRIVATE). The lab VM has no /usr/lib/libc.so.6, so it never showed. The
wrapper now puts its -L/-B/--dynamic-linker/-rpath flags ahead of the arguments.

…by mistake)

gcc 15 defaults to C23, where hotspot's serviceability agent (`typedef int bool;` in
agent/src/os/linux/libproc.h) no longer compiles; the lab's gcc 14 defaulted to gnu17.
The Classpath and jamvm-2.0.0 rungs already pinned it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
glibc 2.42's <stdlib.h> declares `unsigned int uabs(int)`; hotspot's inline overloads
of the same name (utilities/globalDefinitions.hpp) then fail to compile against the
bedrock sysroot. Rename hotspot's to hs_uabs after unpacking; the openjdk rungs apply
the same rename conditionally, as a no-op where their hotspot has none.

… the anchor differs)

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The wrapper's -std=gnu17 does not survive the JDK's flag handling for libnet's gio
shims (K&R `()` prototypes, "too many arguments" under gcc 15's C23), so it goes into
--with-extra-cflags, which the JDK appends last. jtreg's libTestJNI.c trips gcc 14's
incompatible-pointer-types error; it is a warning again.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The sandbox runs as a uid with no passwd entry, so `whoami` fails; JDK 21+'s configure
refuses an empty build user ("Value cannot be empty"). Naming it also keeps the
recorded build user identical between the lab and the sandbox.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
JDK 24 added a static-launcher target to `all`; it links the launcher statically and
fails against the versioned sysroot. The rung ships the jdk image only.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
bin/runtime-deps-audit.py (minimermetic) walks every ELF's DT_NEEDED/PT_INTERP and every
script's exec targets and resolves them against the declared runtime closure. On the lab
rehearsal trees the JDK images load the X libraries, alsa, fontconfig, lcms2, freetype,
libpng, giflib and libjpeg from AWT, sound, font and image code; jikes' interpreter is
the sysroot's ld.so. All were build deps only.

…han patches)

- openjdk-9..25: BUILDINFO heredoc wrote a literal "\n" between the
source and boot fields; split it onto its own line.
- jamvm-1.5.1: drop --enable-runtime-reloc. 1.5.1's configure.ac only
defines runtime-reloc-checks and its autoconf-2.61 configure ignores
unknown options silently, so the flag never did anything (JVMFLAGS
passes -Xnoinlining, so reloc mode is moot anyway).
- openjdk-23..25: drop the libxcursor build dep; these rungs do not
apply the xcursor-no-dynamic patch, so nothing links it.
- openjdk-15/16: remove three classlist patches build.ncl never applies.

Verified: 130 files, all added; packages/jdk (Temurin) and its dependents untouched; which/mrustc identical to main at head. Chain is a clean DAG with strictly downward edges, no prebuilt, no needs; ecj and ant are compiled from source archives and every openjdk rung deletes *.bin/*.exe/*.jar before configure, so nothing prebuilt is smuggled in. 17 sampled Sources (jikes, classpath, both jamvm, icedtea 2.6.13 + 3.19.0 and drops, both ecjsrc, ant, zip, giflib, libXt, jdk-9+181, jdk-25.0.2-ga) match mirror and canonical upstream byte-for-byte. Every Local and patch file exists and is referenced. Output globs match installs. Repro handling is thorough (__DATE__/__TIME__ sed, --enable-reproducible-build, zip/jar/jmod normalisation, classlist sort, no PYTHONHASHSEED). All CodeRabbit threads addressed in d19ad05.

One item needs a maintainer call before I approve:

  • SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH re-export in all 17 openjdk rungs (e.g. openjdk-25/build.sh:84, openjdk-9/build.sh:104: export SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH=315532802). CLAUDE.md and the reproducibility reference say the checker rejects re-exporting it. The reason is sound (jmod rejects pre-1980 dates, so the sandbox's 0 breaks the build) and minimal-check passed, so either the checker is lenient or this needs a documented exemption. Option: --with-source-date=315532802 on rungs whose configure supports it, env export only where it does not; on 9–12 the comment says the export is a no-op and could be dropped.

Should fix before merge:

  • packages/openjdk-{9..25}/build.ncl (e.g. openjdk-9/build.ncl:88-91): gawk, and diffutils, each appear twice in build_deps in all 17 rungs.
  • packages/jikes-1.22/build.ncl:4-24 and build.sh:3-18: lab-notebook narration and private-infra references (minimermetic#89, "proven on the lab VMs 2026-09-11/12", bin/queue/jvm-root-probe*.sh, "verified on cg-fresh", "LESSONS FROM THE LAB RUN"). None of the other rungs or go-1.4 carry this; trim to the classpath-0.93 style.
  • Body: "zip and fastjar helpers are already on main" is stale; both are added here. Body also still says the remaining rungs need a sandbox round "before this leaves draft", but the PR is no longer draft. State whether all 28 artifacts went through it.

Worth knowing for the follow-up that flips jdk to openjdk-25:

  • No --with-version-build/--with-version-opt on any rung, so java -version reports the configure default adhoc.minimal.src opt instead of e.g. 25.0.2+10 (confirmed in jdk-version.m4 for 11u/13u/25u). Deterministic, so not a repro issue, but user-visible. openjdk-9/10 also lack --with-version-pre= and will show -internal.
  • Every rung is amd64-only (arm64 collapses to an empty spec) while today's jdk ships arm64, so the flip would drop arm64 Java unless handled.
  • #825 stubs out gcc-15.2.0-glibc, binutils-2.46-glibc and glibc-bedrock-2.42 on amd64, which this ladder's root rungs import and hardcode. If #825 lands first this breaks with no git conflict. Flagged on #825 as well.

Minor: packages/jikes-1.22/build.sh uses #!/bin/sh + set -ex (others bash, set -eu + ERR trap), re-checks a sha256 the daemon already pins, and hardcodes a :-1.22 fallback for MINIMAL_ARG_VERSION.

…ts, not stubs

gcc-15.2.0-glibc, binutils-2.46-glibc and glibc-bedrock-2.42 now take the
same sha-pinned tarballs the production gcc/binutils/glibc packages already
anchor on (minimermetic#16), with their own outputs. The jvm ladder (#775)
imports them; it now builds either way (jikes-1.22 rebuilt and checked on
the sealed trio). The switch file's new-consumer note narrows to the rest.

9-14: the export was a no-op (nothing under make/ in 12/13/14 reads it), so
drop it. 15-25: pass configure's own --with-source-date=315532802 (jmod
rejects the sandbox's pre-1980 0) instead of overriding the sandbox
variable, the nspr pattern pkgs' CLAUDE.md asks for.

@norrietaylor thanks for the thorough pass. Point by point:

SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH (maintainer call). Fixed in 37f3ca0, following the nspr pattern.

  • 9–14: dropped. Nothing under make/ in the 12, 13 or 14 sources this ladder pins (jdk-12+33, jdk-13.0.14-ga, jdk-14.0.2-ga) references it, so the export was a no-op. The old "JDK 13+ configure reads it" comment was wrong; --with-source-date first appears in jdk-15+36's jdk-options.m4.
  • 15–25: the export is replaced with configure's own --with-source-date=315532802. Configure resolves the same value, so the outputs should be unchanged, and nothing re-sets the sandbox variable.

FWIW, the checker itself (crates/check/src/lib.rs) only rejects re-setting it to 0, which is why minimal-check passed. pkgs' CLAUDE.md overstates that; I'll tighten the wording separately.

Should fix:

  • Duplicate gawk / diffutils: removed in all 17 rungs (b6b8360).
  • jikes-1.22 narration and private-infra references: replaced with a classpath-0.93-style header, in both build.ncl and build.sh. None of the other added files carry any.
  • Body: corrected. zip and fastjar are added here, and the remaining rungs' sandbox round is still pending the builder TPM.

#825 ordering. Settled as #825 first. Rather than wiring tarballs into each jvm root, #825 now makes gcc-15.2.0-glibc, binutils-2.46-glibc and glibc-bedrock-2.42 take the same sealed artifacts the production gcc/binutils/glibc packages already anchor on (617e2057 / e796366a / d0850b65, minimermetic#16) while the switch is off, with each package's own outputs. So this ladder works either way. Verified by a scratch merge of both branches: jikes-1.22 rebuilt (--rebuild) and min check passed on the sealed trio.

Worth knowing / minor: noted for the jdk flip follow-up: version strings (adhoc opt, -internal on 9/10), arm64 coverage, and jikes' sh / set -ex / redundant sha / :-1.22 fallback.

Since every rung's build.sh or deps changed, the chain rebuilds. The real check is build-bot's full build plus a byte-for-byte comparison with the 09-23 seal.

The B5 gcc and B4 binutils have no RUNPATH; their loader is the
sysroot's ld.so, which searches /usr/lib and found production glibc
2.44 there (symbol lookup error: __pointer_chk_guard, GLIBC_PRIVATE).
Wrap every executable that loads through that ld.so with
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$SR/lib and put the wrappers first on PATH.

How this attaches to #775 (the from-source JVM ladder).

#897 restructures the JDK names so the ladder can slot in later without touching dependents:

  • jdk becomes a meta-package over jdk-25, the same shape as toolchain. Dependents (maven, gradle, jdtls, ghidra, tlaplus, android-sdk) name jdk or a versioned line, never an implementation.
  • jdk-21 and jdk-25 are Temurin binaries today. When jvm: bootstrap OpenJDK from source (jikes/jamvm/classpath root, icedtea, openjdk-9..25) #775 lands, jdk-25 (and jdk-21) can switch to the ladder's openjdk-25 / openjdk-21 rungs behind the same names. That swap is one recipe each, and the meta-package and dependents don't change.

What the swap needs from #775 first:

  1. Current updates on the user-facing rungs. The rungs build GA tarballs (openjdk-21 = 21.0.2, openjdk-25 = 25.0.2), which is fine for booting the next rung. Temurin ships 21.0.12.1 and 25.0.4.1, so a user-facing from-source JDK needs either an update rung on top of each GA rung or the rung moved to the current jdkNNu tag. Otherwise the swap is a security regression.
  2. CA certificates. Temurin bundles lib/security/cacerts; a from-source build needs it generated from our ca-certificates.
  3. Version check and CVE identity. Provenance would become openjdk/jdk25u tags (jdk-25.0.4+N) instead of adoptium/temurin25-binaries; the oracle:jdk / oracle:jre CPE identity (minimal-supply-chain#513) carries over unchanged.
  4. A rung for 27, for jdk-27. The template generator makes it mechanical: booted from 25 or 26, per OpenJDK's boot-JDK rule (N-1 or N).

Preserve the .jlink/.jmod hash contract in OpenJDK 9–11 and 15–16.

P4 rewrites .jmod ZIP contents after jlink generates ModuleHashes. These rungs hash the raw module artifact, so a later jli 10BC8 nk can reject the shipped modules with a Hash of <module> differs... error. OpenJDK 12–14 already apply the content-hash backport and are not affected.

For OpenJDK 9–11 and 15–16, either backport the content-hash change, or exclude .jmod files from P4 after establishing that their remaining bytes are deterministic. Add this gate after P4 for each affected rung:

"${DST}/bin/jlink" --module-path "${DST}/jmods" --add-modules java.se --output "${BUILDROOT}/jlink-gate"

The sealed binutils-2.46-glibc and production binutils 2.47 both put
libsframe.so.3 in /usr/lib; whichever wins, as from one loads the
other's library and aborts (stack smashing). Production binutils is
consistent with the production glibc it runs on; the bedrock gcc keeps
its sysroot-libc wrapper and still links against the 2.42 sysroot.

The bedrock gcc wrapper exports LD_LIBRARY_PATH for gcc and its cc1;
the production as it spawned inherited it, loaded the 2.42 libc and
aborted. Give as/ld wrappers that unset it.

gcc looks for as in its own tool dirs before PATH and found an
unwrapped copy, which inherited the sysroot library path and aborted.
-B is searched first, for the driver and for collect2.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH leaked from the bedrock gcc into the production /bin/sh
and as it ran, which then aborted on the 2.42 libc. Start each bedrock
program (drivers, cc1, cc1plus, collect2, lto1) through the sysroot's
ld.so with --library-path; the drivers find the wrapped internals via -B.

…roduction binutils

On main the amd64 bedrock roots are sealed tarballs and /usr/lib holds
production glibc 2.44. The B5 gcc has no RUNPATH, so its 2.42 loader
picked up the 2.44 libc and nothing ran. Every rung now starts each
bedrock program through the sysroot's ld.so with --library-path (per
process, so the production as, ld and /bin/sh it runs keep their own
libc), and assembles and links with production binutils 2.47 instead of
the sealed 2.46, whose libsframe.so.3 collides with 2.47's in /usr/lib.
Proven on jikes-1.22 in the sandbox.

…terim; stops ladder rebuilds) (gominimal#825)

* amd64: consume the bootstrap chain as sealed tarballs, like arm64 (interim)

Every change under openssl/python/glibc rebuilt the whole amd64 hex0 chain
(38 packages: stage0 ladder, glibc-bedrock, gcc/binutils-*-glibc, go-1.4..1.24.9,
mrustc, rustc-1.91..1.97), because its build tools come from the live tree.
That backs up build-bot on every world-touching PR.

arm64 already avoids this: the chain is empty stubs there and `go` / `rust`
take sha-pinned tarballs of its last rung. This does the same on amd64, behind
one switch (packages/hex0/amd64-ladder.ncl, `enabled = false`):

- the 38 chain packages' amd64 spec is an empty stub while the switch is off
- go (amd64) takes go-1.24.9 as a prebuilt over build-bot's own output of that
rung; rust (amd64) does the same for rustc-1.97.1, with the rung's runtime_deps.
Both tarballs are build-bot's artifacts at 9d20a83 (commit map sha), copied to
  gs://minimal-staging-archives/prebuilts/bedrock/sha256/<sha>/, same layout as the
rungs (usr/lib/...), so build.sh is unchanged.

Flip the switch to true to build the chain from hex0 again.

* amd64 ladder switch: address review (rebase onto gominimal#810, consumers, llvm note, stale comments)

- gominimal#810 moved rust's stage0 to the rustc-1.98.1 rung, so the amd64 bedrock
arm moves there (mirrors its arm64 arm); rust/build.ncl is back to main's.
  The 1.97.1 tarball is unchanged.
- llvm bumpers: the amd64 tarball links the live libLLVM, unlike arm64's.
- the switch file names its consumers and the new-consumer trap (gominimal#775).
- stale comments: go/build.ncl and all 38 chain preambles.

* amd64 ladder off: the three bedrock roots become their sealed artifacts, not stubs

gcc-15.2.0-glibc, binutils-2.46-glibc and glibc-bedrock-2.42 now take the
same sha-pinned tarballs the production gcc/binutils/glibc packages already
anchor on (minimermetic#16), with their own outputs. The jvm ladder (gominimal#775)
imports them; it now builds either way (jikes-1.22 rebuilt and checked on
the sealed trio). The switch file's new-consumer note narrows to the rest.

* bedrock trio: share outputs/runtime_deps via let bindings, not amd64_spec.<field>

Reading a field back out of the contracted amd64_spec record broke the
whole-repo evaluation (mip dump: "not a function" in std contract/custom),
which per-package checks did not hit. Hoist both into lets, as the
production glibc does with all_outputs. With the switch on, all three spec
hashes are unchanged.

gominimal#867)

It rejects re-setting it to 0, not any re-set; a non-zero override passes,
which is how the openjdk rungs (gominimal#775) carried one. Point at the per-tool
option instead.
