rust: 1.98.1 -> 1.99.0 (new rustc-1.98.1 rung; arm64 rung builds from the 1.97.1 bedrock) - #810
Conversation
1.99.0's src/stage0 pins 1.98.0; x.py's check_stage0_version accepts any 1.98.x (it compares major/minor only, verified in the 1.99.0 source), so the stage0 is a new rung rustc-1.98.1 -- a mechanical copy of the 1.97.1 rung (version, stage0, import, sha; bootstrap's VendorOutput is unchanged), built from the already-mirrored rustc-1.98.1-src by rustc-1.97.1. The earlier rungs are empty on arm64 and packages/rust took a hand-built rustc-1.97.1-aarch64 bedrock tarball. This rung instead BUILDS on arm64 from that same sha-pinned tarball, so rust 1.99 takes the 1.98.1 rung on both arches from the builder and no new hand-built prebuilt is needed. The 1.90..1.97.1 chain is unchanged and comes from the cache. rustc-1.99.0-src.tar.xz is mirrored (no-clobber), sha256 cc41916a... equal to static.rust-lang.org's published .sha256. Document the arm64 stage0 path in "Stage0 wiring".
Lines 10-14 say bootstrap.toml always points at /usr/lib/rustc-1.97.1/bin/{rustc,cargo}, but that is not the actual stage0 path on either arch. build.sh Lines 47-53 copy the stage0 to ${BUILDROOT}/stage0-clean and pin bootstrap.toml at that copy. On arm64, the source of that copy is also ${BUILDROOT}/rustc-1.97.1-aarch64. Update the section so it matches the script.

Remove "empty on arm64" from the build.ncl row.
Line 47 says the spec is "empty on arm64". Lines 18-21 of this README say this rung builds on arm64. build.ncl Lines 29-38 also define an arm64 stage0 from the rustc-1.97.1-aarch64 tarball, and build.sh Lines 38-40 use it. The table row was copied from an earlier rung and now contradicts the arm64 section.

Correct the stated scope of the byte seal.
If an operator arms the seal with only the two listed hashes, sha256sum -c does not check lib/rustlib/**. Changed library files can pass that check. Add library hashes if the seal must cover them, or state that the seal checks only bin/rustc and bin/cargo.

x.py 1.99.0 rejects it ("unknown field ... for key build"). Its own change
tracker: "compiletest is now always built with the stage 0 compiler, so
build.compiletest-use-stage0-libtest has no effect" (146929), then "Obsolete
option ... has been removed" (159878). Every other key in bootstrap.toml was
checked against the 1.99.0 config parser and is still accepted.
The rustc-1.98.1 rung itself built on both arches in the failed run (rust
reported "stage0: rustc-1.98.1" on amd64 and arm64).

Verified: both src tarball sha256s equal the published .sha256 on static.rust-lang.org; upstream src/stage0 at 1.99.0 says compiler_version=1.98.0 and check_stage0_version accepts minor == minor || minor+1, so a 1.98.1 stage0 is valid; compiletest-use-stage0-libtest exists in 1.98.1 toml/build.rs and is gone in 1.99.0, so the bootstrap.toml deletion is required. New rung's gate files are byte-identical to rustc-1.97.1; build.sh differs only in versions plus the arm64 STAGE0_PREFIX override. 70 dependents, none pin a rustc version. Repro flags unchanged.
Nits:
packages/rust/build.ncl:2:let { target, .. } = import "config.ncl"is now unused (thematch ... targetwas replaced by@ [rustc-1-98-1]). Drop it.packages/rustc-1.98.1/README.md:47: Files table still says the spec is "empty on arm64", contradicting the "## arm64" section above it.- Body says
rustc-1.98.1must be added to pkgmgr'sdata/frozen_packages.toml. That file is not in this repo; confirm the pkgmgr PR exists before merge so the rung is not left unfrozen. - Pre-existing, out of scope:
packages/rustc-1.97.1/README.mdstill titles itselfrustc-1.96.0throughout.
Note: #825 edits the same amd64 match arm in packages/rust/build.ncl, and its stubs would also empty this rung's rustc-1-97-1 stage0 on amd64. Whichever lands second needs a rebase; see my comment on #825 for ordering.

…terim; stops ladder rebuilds) (gominimal#825) * amd64: consume the bootstrap chain as sealed tarballs, like arm64 (interim) Every change under openssl/python/glibc rebuilt the whole amd64 hex0 chain (38 packages: stage0 ladder, glibc-bedrock, gcc/binutils-*-glibc, go-1.4..1.24.9, mrustc, rustc-1.91..1.97), because its build tools come from the live tree. That backs up build-bot on every world-touching PR. arm64 already avoids this: the chain is empty stubs there and `go` / `rust` take sha-pinned tarballs of its last rung. This does the same on amd64, behind one switch (packages/hex0/amd64-ladder.ncl, `enabled = false`): - the 38 chain packages' amd64 spec is an empty stub while the switch is off - go (amd64) takes go-1.24.9 as a prebuilt over build-bot's own output of that rung; rust (amd64) does the same for rustc-1.97.1, with the rung's runtime_deps. Both tarballs are build-bot's artifacts at 9d20a83 (commit map sha), copied to gs://minimal-staging-archives/prebuilts/bedrock/sha256/<sha>/, same layout as the rungs (usr/lib/...), so build.sh is unchanged. Flip the switch to true to build the chain from hex0 again. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * amd64 ladder switch: address review (rebase onto gominimal#810, consumers, llvm note, stale comments) - gominimal#810 moved rust's stage0 to the rustc-1.98.1 rung, so the amd64 bedrock arm moves there (mirrors its arm64 arm); rust/build.ncl is back to main's. The 1.97.1 tarball is unchanged. - llvm bumpers: the amd64 tarball links the live libLLVM, unlike arm64's. - the switch file names its consumers and the new-consumer trap (gominimal#775). - stale comments: go/build.ncl and all 38 chain preambles. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * amd64 ladder off: the three bedrock roots become their sealed artifacts, not stubs gcc-15.2.0-glibc, binutils-2.46-glibc and glibc-bedrock-2.42 now take the same sha-pinned tarballs the production gcc/binutils/glibc packages already anchor on (minimermetic#16), with their own outputs. The jvm ladder (gominimal#775) imports them; it now builds either way (jikes-1.22 rebuilt and checked on the sealed trio). The switch file's new-consumer note narrows to the rest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * bedrock trio: share outputs/runtime_deps via let bindings, not amd64_spec.<field> Reading a field back out of the contracted amd64_spec record broke the whole-repo evaluation (mip dump: "not a function" in std contract/custom), which per-package checks did not hit. Hoist both into lets, as the production glibc does with all_outputs. With the switch on, all three spec hashes are unchanged. rust1.98.1 → 1.99.0 (released 2026-10-01). This unblocks maki 0.6.0 (rust-version = "1.99", dropped from #809) and any other crate that raises its MSRV.Only the new pieces build. The 1.90.0 … 1.97.1 bootstrap chain is unchanged, so it comes from the content-addressed cache. New builds: one rung (
rustc-1.98.1) andrust1.99.0, on each arch, plus whatever depends onrust.Stage0. 1.99.0's
src/stage0pins 1.98.0. x.py'scheck_stage0_version(in 1.99.0'ssrc/bootstrap/src/core/config/config.rs) compares major and minor only and accepts the same or previous minor, so a 1.98.1 stage0 passes. The new rung is thereforerustc-1.98.1:VendorOutputstruct, which the rung'svendor.rssed targets, is identical in 1.98.1;rustc-1.98.1-srcbyrustc-1.97.1, exactly the pairingrust1.98.1 builds with today.arm64, the one design change. The earlier rungs are empty on arm64, and
rust1.98.1 used a hand-builtrustc-1.97.1-aarch64bedrock tarball. This rung builds on arm64 too, using that same sha-pinned tarball as its stage0 (extracted to${BUILDROOT}/rustc-1.97.1-aarch64).rust1.99 then takes the 1.98.1 rung on both arches from the builder. The trust root on arm64 is unchanged (the same 1.97.1 tarball), and nobody has to hand-build a 1.98.x arm64 prebuilt.Source.
rustc-1.99.0-src.tar.xzcomes from static.rust-lang.org; its sha256cc41916a…7036equals Rust's published.sha256. It is mirrored no-clobber togs://minimal-staging-archives/, and the bucket md5 matches the local file. GPG was not checked (no gpg on the host). Also needed (pkgmgr side): add
rustc-1.98.1todata/frozen_packages.toml. The rung already carries the# pkgmgr: bootstrap_rung = "rust"marker, so it is frozen today; the TOML entry is the backstop.Risk. A new bootstrap may need small
bootstrap.toml/build.shtweaks for 1.99.0, as earlier rungs did. The build will tell; I'll iterate on this branch.Needs a human reviewer; build + tests are the merge gate.
