What

The daily update check of gominimal/inbox#589, client side (units 3 and 4 of the plan on that issue): min learns once a day whether its channel has a newer release, says so once on stderr, and the check is the first install count we have. The architecture records it as the one on-by-default exception until 1.0 (gominimal/arch#152: D9, the AT20 split, AT27).

  • Every command calls update_check::before_command first. It reads <state>/minimal/update-check.json; when the last check is older than 24 h it spawns a detached min update-check --background (own process group, null stdio, reaped by a thread of its own) and goes on at once. The parent never touches the network.
  • The child makes one GET https://update.minimal.dev/v1/<channel>/<key>?os&arch&install&id with a 2 s budget and no retry, caches the answer, always exits 0. Down, slow or 404: nothing.
  • Up to date ⇔ latest == key. The installer writes <state>/minimal/install.toml (channel, method = "installer", key = the pointer it installed) and records it so --uninstall removes it. A package can ship the same file under <prefix>/share/minimal/. A build with neither reports on the source channel and never gets a notice; --version installs are pinned and never get one either. It also carries bin, the min it installed, and is read only by that binary (links resolved), so a dev build or 8000 another copy reports source.
  • The notice prints once per new pointer, on stderr, only when stderr is a terminal: min 0.7.1: the stable channel is now at 0.7.2. How to update: <docs>. The docs section it points at carries the update steps (run the installer again for your channel; a package install updates through its package manager). The notice prints only before a short command such as min ls, and never before bare min, run, session attach, task, box or the dashboard.
  • Off, any one wins: [telemetry] enabled = false, MINIMAL_TELEMETRY falsy (mlog's Flag), DO_NOT_TRACK, CI, OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true (D9: it turns off everything), --minimal-dir (an alternate state dir would count the same install twice). [telemetry] enabled = false in /etc/minimal/config.toml turns it off for every user of the machine; the user file cannot turn it back on. [telemetry] is enabled alone; spec 25's export keys get a typed table when gominimal/arch#101 defines them.
  • On by default until 1.0: the first short command with a terminal (min ls, not bare min) prints a one-line disclosure and defers the first request. min update-check --dry-run prints the exact request and the switch that stops it. The installer's own min calls run with MINIMAL_UNDER_INSTALLER=1 and take no part in the check.
  • What is read back from the state file is trusted no further than the install file: the id must be the UUID shape we mint and the pointer fields the install charset, or they read as absent. The id is minted under the spawn lock by re-reading the file, so two first commands mint one id between them.

Docs: docs/reference/telemetry.md gains an "Update check" section (the six fields and a fixed User-Agent: min, the switches, the cadence); spec 07 gains R6.1b for install.toml.

Already shipped alongside

  • The Worker lives in gominimal/webapp (workers/update-check/, webapp#916, merged) and update.minimal.dev is live (infra#625: the record and the rate-limit rule).

Not in this PR

  • Package-manager install.toml files (brew tap, apt/dnf, AUR): gominimal/inbox#1168.
  • A dashboard over the Analytics Engine data: gominimal/inbox#1169.

Proof

  • 28 unit tests under update_check/ (five files: the hook and constants, switches, state, notice, request): the switch table, key extraction, install-file precedence, state round-trip and out-of-charset fields reading as absent, the daily due check, the stale lock, notice-once, the six-field request, and a local stub for a good answer, a 404, an out-of-charset answer and a 3 s endpoint given up within the 2 s budget. Round 15 adds: the config state never panics, each switch names its remedy, the installer guard, the answer line, an answer tied to its install key, and the fixed User-Agent.
  • scripts/install_test.sh (959 checks) asserts install.toml is written, recorded, carries the pointer, and goes on uninstall. It also checks bin, the card's full field list, and that every installer min call carries MINIMAL_UNDER_INSTALLER.
  • End-to-end on anvil against a stub endpoint: disclosure on the first tty run and no request; the request on the second run; the notice once on the third; nothing on a non-tty stderr; CI=1 makes no request; with the endpoint down the command's wall time is unchanged.
  • Lab scenarios 799-update-check-notice and 799b-update-check-switches (min-regress): fail on main, pass on the candidate, four distros (see the evidence comments). 799b covers OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true, the organization file and a fresh state dir. Re-run in round 15 as cand-r2650r15-89beb2ce: 799 and 799b pass.

Closes nothing yet: inbox#589 stays open for #1168 and #1169.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a daily update check that can notify you when a newer release is available for your installation channel.
    • Added manual and preview options for checking updates. The first eligible terminal session displays a notice before any update-check request is made.
    • Installers now record installation details used to determine applicable updates.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how update checks work, how to run them manually, and which settings disable them.
  • Configuration
    • Added telemetry settings for enabling telemetry and configuring export options.

…nd say so

The daily update check of gominimal/inbox#589. Every command reads a cached
answer in <state>/minimal/update-check.json; when the last check is older
than 24 hours it spawns a detached `min update-check --background`, which
makes one GET https://update.minimal.dev/v1/<channel>/<key> with a 2 second
budget and no retry, caches the answer and exits 0 whatever happens. The
command never waits. A later command prints one stderr line, only on a
terminal, once per new pointer, naming the channel's release and the
command that updates the install.

Up to date is pointer == key: the installer now writes <state>/install.toml
(channel, method, key) and records it for uninstall; a package ships the
same file under <prefix>/share/minimal; a build with neither reports on the
`source` channel by its commit hash and is never notified. No version
ordering, so a misbehaving endpoint cannot nag.

Off, any one wins: [telemetry] enabled = false (a new config table that also
accepts spec 25's reserved keys now, the file being deny_unknown_fields),
MINIMAL_TELEMETRY falsy, DO_NOT_TRACK, or CI. On by default until 1.0; the
first interactive run discloses that and defers the first request.
`min update-check --dry-run` prints the exact request.

Walkthrough

The CLI now supports a daily update check. It reads telemetry settings and install metadata, can run a detached request when a check is due, and can show a release notice. The installer writes metadata for channel and pinned installs.

Changes: Daily Update Check

The CLI adds a hidden update-check command with background and dry-run options. The startup hook can disclose the check, spawn a detached child, and display an eligible notice.
Layer / File(s) Summary
Settings and install metadata
crates/client-config/src/config.rs, docs/specs/07-spec-installer/07-spec-installer.md, scripts/install.sh, scripts/install_test.sh
The configuration accepts a [telemetry] section. The installer writes install.toml with the channel, method, and version key, records it for uninstall, and omits its update-check message for pinned installs. Tests cover these metadata values and uninstall behavior.
Check state and selection
crates/minimal/Cargo.toml, crates/minimal/src/update_check.rs
The update-check module selects opt-out settings, reads install metadata, maintains persisted check state, checks whether a daily request is due, and determines whether a release notice is eligible.

Request handling and validation
crates/minimal/src/update_check.rs, docs/reference/telemetry.md
The command supports dry-run, background, and foreground modes. Requests have a two-second budget and no redirects. Tests cover settings, state, notices, request URLs, and request outcomes. The guide documents the check and its controls.

Add proof for --version metadata.

R6.1b requires channel = "pinned" for --version installs. Unit 6 has no proof artifact for R6.1b, and the existing --version test does not inspect install.toml.

Suggested spec update
 - **Test** (R6.1a): when the manifest for *this* run still ships the old
component, the file it just installed survives and no removal is announced —
the case that would otherwise leave the host with no switch binary.
+- **Test** (R6.1b): a `--version v1` install writes `<state>/install.toml` with
+ `channel = "pinned"`, `method = "installer"`, and `key = "v1"`, and records
+ it for uninstall.
Suggested installer-test assertion
     check "$h_minimald" "$(hash_file "$HV/bin/minimald")" "--version installs that version's bytes (R2.5)"
     want_ok "--version names the version, not a target (R2.5)" grep -q "version.*v1" "$OUT"
+ _vim="$HV/xdg-state/minimal/install.toml"
+ want_ok "--version writes install metadata (R6.1b)" test -f "$_vim"
+ want_ok "--version records the pinned channel (R6.1b)" grep -qx 'channel = "pinned"' "$_vim"
+ want_ok "--version records the installer method (R6.1b)" grep -qx 'method = "installer"' "$_vim"
+ want_ok "--version records the installed version (R6.1b)" grep -qx 'key = "v1"' "$_vim"

The update-check line is not part of R6.1b. R10.4 requires a successful closing card and its first commands, but it does not require this line or define its pinned-install behavior. Do not add those assertions under R6.1b.

Justify the foreground state-write discard.

Only the foreground write_state call lacks a justification. If it fails, the command still returns success without caching the answer. The documented foreground behavior is to make the request and print the answer; it does not require persistence failure to fail the command. Document that persistence is best effort.

…t run, keep a concurrent notice

From review (#2650). The disclosure no longer hangs on the install id
being new: an install whose first runs were a script's (the installer's
own finalize-install call, an agent) discloses on its first interactive
run. No first run makes the request, interactive or not, so a script's
install is counted from its next command, as the comment already said.
The child re-reads the state after its request and changes o
BD0
nly the
answer fields, so a notice a concurrent command printed is not printed
again. A spawn that fails releases the lock it took. The request follows
no redirect: the query would otherwise go to whatever host the answer
named. A config.toml that exists but does not parse turns the check off.
The docs count the request's six fields, and the installer suite proves
the pinned record of a --version install.

Round 2, one commit on top, answers every thread (all bot-authored, resolved with the reply): disclosure on the first terminal run whatever came before, no request on an install's first run, the child keeps what a concurrent command wrote, the lock is released on a failed spawn, no redirects are followed, an unreadable config fails closed, the docs count six fields, and the installer suite proves the pinned record of a --version install (CodeRabbit's nit on spec 07).

Lab run on anvil (min-regress scenario 799-update-check-notice, batch c5-589-lab): the candidate built from this branch against the current main build, four distros (debian-12, debian-13, ubuntu-22.04, ubuntu-24.04), each cell driving the real min against a local stub endpoint through MINIMAL_UPDATE_CHECK_URL with an installer-written install.toml.

one request with the six fields on the second run 4/4 0/4
the notice once on the third terminal run, not again 4/4 0/4

…; mint the id first

From review (#2650 round 2). The install file's channel, method and key
go into a request path, a query and a terminal line, so a file whose
fields are outside `[A-Za-z0-9._-]{1,64}` counts as absent, the packaged
file under share/ included. A foreground `min update-check` on a fresh
install mints the install id before the request instead of sending the
dry-run placeholder as the id.

…k writes its id first

From review (#2650 round 3). The command that prints the disclosure makes
no request, whatever came before it, so the text is read before the first
request leaves on that terminal; an install whose commands are a script's
is still counted from its second command, which the module doc now says
plainly, with the decision it rests on. A foreground `min update-check`
that mints the install id sends it only once the state file is written;
an id that failed to persist would be minted again and counted twice.

Reuse valid_field instead of the inline ok closure.

The ok closure repeats the charset and length rule that valid_field defines at Line 146. If one copy changes, the answer check and the install-file check can drift apart. Both checks protect the same path, query and terminal sinks.

Justify each discarded Result, and handle the write_state failure in record_answer.

These lines use let _ = ... without a comment that explains the discard. The coding guidelines forbid this.

The discard at Line 473 has a runtime effect. If write_state fails, checked_at is not stored. due() then stays true. After the first run, every command spawns a new child, and each child makes a request. The recording_an_answer_keeps... test names this as a "retry storm" to avoid.

Add a short comment at each discard. For Line 473, also log the error with tracing::debug!, or return the io::Result so the caller can decide.

As per coding guidelines: "Never swallow errors. No let _ = result; or .ok() discards without a comment justifying it."

…config as such

From review (#2650 round 4). A foreground `min update-check` under
`DO_NOT_TRACK`, `CI` or a disabled config mints no install id: the
switches are read first, so a disabled install keeps no id file. An
unreadable config is its own off reason, and the dry run and the
foreground error say "a config.toml that could not be read or parsed"
rather than claiming a setting the file may not hold.

[telemetry] section and its test move with it, and boxes keeps main's
re-export.
…just landed

From review (#2650 round 5). The notice branch wrote back the state read
at the top of the command, so a child that finished in between lost its
answer and `checked_at`, and the next command would check again and could
repeat the notice. It now re-reads the file and sets only `notified`, as
`record_answer` does for the child.

Reuse valid_field instead of repeating the charset check.

This closure repeats the body of valid_field (Lines 165-170): non-empty, at most 64 characters, and only [A-Za-z0-9._-]. If one copy changes, the answer check and the install-file check can diverge.

Justify each discarded Result with a comment.

Five sites discard an I/O result with let _ =: release_lock, the disclosure writeln!, the notice writeln!, record_notified and record_answer. The discards follow from the "never fails the command" design in the module doc. The repository standard still requires a justification at each site. Without one, a reader cannot tell a deliberate discard from an oversight.

Add a short comment at each site. Example for record_answer and release_lock:

♻️ Proposed change
 pub fn release_lock(path: &Path) {
+ // Best effort: a lock that stays is taken over after LOCK_STALE.
     let _ = std::fs::remove_file(path);
 }
     state.checked_at = Some(now_secs());
+ // Best effort: the check never fails a command. An unwritten state
+ // only makes the next command check again.
     let _ = write_state(state_path, &state);

Use the same pattern for the two writeln! calls (stderr may be closed) and for record_notified.

As per coding guidelines: "Never swallow errors. No let _ = result; or .ok() discards without a comment justifying it."

Add #[non_exhaustive] to TelemetryConfig.

TelemetryConfig is a public struct, and its field docs reserve keys for the opt-in export in spec 25. Adding a public field later breaks downstream code that builds the struct with a literal. The sibling config structs in this file (SecretsConfig, LoadoutsConfig, SessionKeysConfig) and Config already carry the attribute. No crate outside this file builds TelemetryConfig with a literal today, so the impact is future API breakage rather than a current failure.

…losure write changes one field

Review round 12 (minimal-review on #2650): two first commands running together each minted an
install id and wrote the whole state they had read, so the last writer won and one install sent two
ids. `claim_install_id` takes the spawn lock, re-reads the file and mints only when it still holds
no id (the other command finds it on disk, or finds the lock held and leaves the minting to the next
command); the disclosure is recorded by re-reading and changing `disclosed` alone, as the answer and
notice writers do, so a child's answer written meanwhile stays. The foreground `min update-check`
mints the same way.

Round 12 (2a3fa92): the install id is minted under the spawn lock by re-reading the state file, so two first commands running together mint one id between them and neither clobbers the other's write (minimal-review's finding); the disclosure write changes one field the same way. Rounds 11 and 12 together answer everything from the last review except the architecture point, which is gominimal/arch#152, now clean on the bot side and waiting for a human review.

gominimal/arch#152 is merged: the architecture now records the update check as the one on-by-default exception until 1.0 (D9, the AT20 split, AT27), so the first blocker from the last review is cleared on the document side. Rounds 11 and 12 cover the rest.

Re-checked at 2a3fa923a. Most of my 10-29 points are addressed, and so is minimal-foundry's install-id race. What's left:

High: OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true doesn't turn the check off. arch D9 (architecture.md:796) says "OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true turns off everything", and this PR's own telemetry.md:302,399 lists it as an off switch. off_switch (update_check/switches.rs:42-64) reads only DO_NOT_TRACK, CI, MINIMAL_TELEMETRY and the config. A user who exports OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true to silence Minimal still sends their install id, OS, arch and channel daily. The child sets OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true on itself to mute its own OTel (request.rs:56), so the child needs a different mute before the parent can honour the variable.

Medium:

  • --version installs are counted but never told (scripts/install.sh:1727). The closing-card line prints only when target is set, but a pinned install still sends the request. An agent-driven curl … | sh -s -- --version v1 is counted from its second command with no disclosure anywhere. The line also doesn't say what is sent or name the off switch.
  • The org config's [telemetry] enabled = false is parsed and ignored (update_check/mod.rs:114-120). Only the user file's Config is kept, and the org file still accepts the section, so an admin's fleet-wide off is silently ignored. D9 has the setting user- or org-scoped.
  • A missing state dir is a dead end (state.rs:166-183, request.rs:127-131). acquire_lock uses create_new in <state>/minimal without creating the directory. ENOENT gives "another min command is … checking now; run this again" on every run, and the hook does nothing until something else creates the directory.
  • Spec 25 still contradicts this. 25-spec-telemetry.md TEL-001 ("open no connection for telemetry unless MINIMAL_TELEMETRY…"), L28 ("A user who does not opt in gets nothing new") and L31 (AT20 "telemetry is opt-in") predate arch#152. This PR should amend them, or a spec PR should land with it.

Low:

  • read_client_config now runs on every command, so org-config warnings show up on min ls, and in ssh's stderr on every min proxy.
  • The detached child is never waited on (request.rs:63-65), so a long min or attach session carries a <defunct> entry. The comment there says the opposite.
  • The notice's "How to update" link (notice.rs:20-26) goes to a section with no update steps.
  • telemetry.md:249 still says the notice names an update command, and the telemetry field doc at client-config/src/config.rs:49-53 still describes keys that deny_unknown_fields now refuses.
  • Test names: the_request_carries_the_eight_fields_and_nothing_more (tests.rs:486) asserts six, and the_notice_names_the_pointer_and_the_upgrade_path (tests.rs:455) checks a notice with no upgrade path.

0chroma's five threads are outdated and mostly addressed in code, but still unresolved. The shared-parser one needs their sign-off on your reasoning.

…esh state dir

- `OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true` turns the check off (D9: it turns off everything); the child is
muted by `MINIMAL_OTEL_{TRACES,LOGS}_EXPORTER=none` and `MINIMAL_OTEL_SPOOL=0` instead of
the veto, so the parent can honour the variable
- `[telemetry] enabled = false` in the organization's `/etc/minimal/config.toml` turns it off
too; both files are read directly and silently, so no org-file warning before every command
- `acquire_lock` makes `<state>/minimal`: a fresh install no longer reads a lock it cannot
create as held on every run
- the installer's closing card discloses the check for every install, `--version` included,
says what is sent and names the switch
- the child is reaped by a thread, so a long command carries no `<defunct>` entry
- docs: the notice's link lands on update steps; spec 25 records the exception (arch#152);
the config field doc and two test names say what they describe

Round 13 (d88416b, on main f6fcbab merged in) answers the 2026-11-03 review, all ten items.

High: OTEL_SDK_DISABLED. off_switch reads it as mlog does (true in any case, no other value) and names it; D9's "turns off everything" now includes the check, and the docs table and the disclosure say so. The child no longer sets the veto on itself: it is muted signal by signal, MINIMAL_OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER=none, MINIMAL_OTEL_LOGS_EXPORTER=none, MINIMAL_OTEL_SPOOL=0, which the MINIMAL_ precedence keeps from being turned back on by anything in the parent's environment. A test runs that environment through mlog::otel::guest_exports and asserts nothing exports or spools, and through off_switch and asserts the mute is not one of the check's switches.

Medium.

  • --version installs told nothing. The closing card now discloses for every install: the channel line for a channel install, "min reports this install once a day (no release notices for --version)" for a pinned one, and both say what is sent and name MINIMAL_TELEMETRY=0. An agent-driven pinned install has read it there, which the docs now say. install_test.sh asserts the pinned card's two lines (954 checks, sh and dash, on anvil).
  • Org config ignored. config_state reads the user file and /etc/minimal/config.toml itself, with read_config_or_default, and enabled = false in either turns the check off; the user file cannot turn on what the administrator turned off, and an org file that does not parse fails closed like the user's. The reason text names both files.
  • Missing state dir. acquire_lock makes the lock's directory first. A test claims the id in a directory that does not exist.
  • Spec 25. L28, the AT20 line and TEL-001 now record the check as the one on-by-default exception until 1.0 under arch#152 (D9), with its switches; spec-lint has no new finding.

Low.

  • read_client_config is no longer called from the hook: the direct read above prints nothing, so min ls and min proxy get no org-file warning from the check.
  • The child is reaped by a thread of its own; a long attach carries no <defunct> entry. The comment there says what happens now.
  • The "How to update" section has update steps: the installer line for the channel, --version for a pinned install, the package manager for a package install.
  • telemetry.md no longer says the notice names a command; the telemetry field doc says enabled is the only key and the rest is refused.
  • The tests are the_request_carries_the_six_fields_and_nothing_more and the_notice_names_the_pointer_and_the_docs_page.

Lab evidence (min-regress batch c5-589r13c-lab on anvil, job 01807; candidate built from d88416b against rel-f6fcbab7; debian-12, debian-13, ubuntu-22.04, ubuntu-24.04; cloud.google.com trace 8fde9452fd63e3144fc2d6fad9d11583):

scenario release candidate
799-update-check-notice (disclosure, the six-field request, the notice once, nothing non-tty or under CI, a dead endpoint costs nothing) fail 2/2 on each distro pass 2/2 on each distro
799b-update-check-switches (new: no <state>/minimal at all still requests on the second command; OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true and the org file's enabled = false make none and are named by --dry-run) fail 2/2 on each distro pass 2/2 on each distro

…r command is minting"

`claim_install_id` returned `None` both when the spawn lock was held and when the state file could
not be written, and the only message blamed another `min` command and said to run again. On a
read-only or full state directory the user would retry forever. The two are now told apart: the
lock case keeps its message; a failed write says the install id could not be saved and names the
file. The per-command hook treats both as "mint nothing this time", as before. One test covers a

Scope matches the title. Every hunk traces to the daily check, its switches, the install record or the docs. Clobber none seen in the diff: the only removed lines are two pub(crate) markers in mlog and reworded spec text. git log and git blame did not run, because the shell tool was denied in this run, so this conclusion rests on the diff alone. Correctness the concurrency, lock, charset and redirect work from earlier rounds holds. I found no defect in due, notice_due, the lock release or the child's mute. One crash path remains: config_state can panic before any command runs. The other findings are printed text and docs. The strings of min update-check use design terms, and two of them claim more than the code proves. The installer card and the docs also say less or more than the code does. Not checked nothing was built or run. gitleaks, trivy and ast-grep did not run for the same reason. A targeted search of the diff for credentials found only identifiers. The dependency change is uuid added to the minimal crate from the workspace, which already enables v4. The Worker's answer format is in another repository and I did not check it.

medium · config_state can panic before the command runs, although the hook promises that it never fails the command. resolve_minimal_config_dir reaches default_dir in crates/paths/src/lib.rs, which calls expect when no home directory resolves. off evaluates config_state first, so CI, DO_NOT_TRACK and --minimal-dir do not avoid it. A container with an arbitrary UID, no HOME and no XDG_CONFIG_HOME now panics on commands that read no config. state_dir uses try_minimal_state_dir for this reason. The same panic makes the no state directory (HOME is not set) error at request.rs:129 unreachable unless a config directory is given. That text also claims more than the code proves, because None can mean a non-UTF-8 path. Resolve the config directory without a panic, and treat a failure as ConfigState::Unreadable. This is local to the hook.

Fixed in c6091d9aa. The hook now resolves the config directory with paths::try_minimal_config_dir_with_override, which returns None where default_dir panicked; None becomes ConfigState::Unreadable(None), so the check fails closed and the command runs. The state-directory error now says that neither XDG_STATE_HOME nor HOME gives an absolute UTF-8 path, and that setting one fixes it. the_config_state_names_its_file_and_never_panics covers it.

low · This error says more than the code proves. fetch_latest returns None for a 404, a refused connection, a bad body and a timeout. A person who gets an instant 404 reads that nothing answered within 2 seconds. The docs say a 404 is a normal answer. The error also gives no next step. Say that the check got no usable answer, and do not state a cause.

low · claim_install_id returns None when the lock is held and also when write_state fails. This message always blames another command and says to run again. On a read-only or full state directory, that instruction fails each time. An earlier round returned the write error with the path, and the move to claim_install_id lost it. An open thread makes the same point and has no reply. Return the two cases apart, and print the path on a write failure.

Round 14 split them: ClaimFailed::Locked and ClaimFailed::NotSaved { path, err }; the write failure prints the path and the io error, and the test checks it names the file. This round fixes the doc comment that still described a None.

low · pointer and installed key are design terms, and the person never sees them elsewhere. The notice uses plainer words: the stable channel is now at 0.7.2. newer is also not proved. The module doc says that the client never orders versions, so a rolled-back channel prints newer pointer available. A --version install that is ahead of its channel prints it too. The line also joins two facts with a semicolon. Reuse the notice's wording, for example the stable channel is at 0.7.2. You have 0.7.1.

low · This refusal states what and why but gives no next step. A person reads the update check is disabled by CI in the environment and must work out the remedy. For ConfigUnreadable the text does not say which of the two files failed, although config_state reads each one apart. Add the action for each reason to UpdateDisabledReason, such as Unset CI to run it, and name the file that failed.

Each reason now carries its own remedy: Unset CI to run it., Remove that line, or set enabled = true, in <file> to run it., Fix <file> to run it., and for the organization file only an administrator can turn it back on. Config and ConfigUnreadable now name the file that decided it; each_switch_names_its_remedy covers every reason.

low · The first command with a terminal prints a one-line disclosure is not what the code does. Only commands in leaves_the_notice_visible print it. Bare min, min run, min session ..., min task, min doctor and min box do not. Line 248 has the same error for the notice: A later command then prints one line. A person who uses only min and min session attach never sees either line, and this page says that they will. The module doc and the doc comment on disclosure() repeat the claim. State the rule: the line waits for a short command such as min ls.

low · six fields and nothing else is not exact. fetch_latest also sends User-Agent: min/<version>, and this header carries the full build version. For a nightly or source install, that is more than the key field. This page is the privacy statement for an on-by-default request, so it must list the header. The test the_request_carries_the_six_fields_and_nothing_more checks only the URL. Add the header to the table, or send a fixed min value.

low · target is assigned only at line 980, on the non---version branch. A --version run with target exported in the environment therefore writes that value as the channel, and it is not validated. The install then counts as a channel install and gets notices, which R6.1b excludes. A value outside the charset makes read_install drop the file, and the install reports as source. The check at line 1736 has the same defect. Decide both from $version_set, which the script already uses at lines 972, 994 and 1012.

Round 14 (af66271): a state file that cannot be written is reported as such, with the file named, instead of as another command minting (minimal-foundry's LOW on r13). Scope matches the title and units 3 and 4 of gominimal/inbox#589. Every hunk traces to the update check, its docs or the installer record.

Clobber none found. The diff removes one spec 25 sentence and widens mlog Flag to pub. I read git log -8 for the branch. I did not run git log for each path.

Correctness The switches, the lock, the id claim, the re-read writers, the redirect policy and the field charsets hold up. The new high finding is an ordering defect. The installer calls min twice, so the first request leaves before the closing card on a default fresh install. The in-box min is a separate script (crates/minimald/src/env.rs:50), so boxes do not run this check. Cargo.lock adds only the existing workspace uuid to minimal, with no version change. I read the diff for credentials and found none. I did not run gitleaks or trivy.

Open threads, not filed again. Eleven comments from the 2026-11-04 review have no reply, and the code at this head still has each defect. The most severe is the medium at crates/minimal/src/update_check/mod.rs:127: config_state panics with no home directory. I confirmed that default_dir still calls expect. The others are at request.rs:115, request.rs:174, request.rs:186, request.rs:192, cli.rs:166, scripts/install.sh:1528, scripts/install.sh:1741, docs/reference/telemetry.md:261, docs/reference/telemetry.md:304 and mod.rs:200. The coder must answer those threads too.

Not checked: I ran no build and no tests, per the review rules. The install_test.sh and lab results are the PR's claims. The Worker lives in another repository, and I did not read it.

high · The gate that holds the request until the person reads the disclosure does not hold during a fresh interactive install. The installer probe at scripts/install.sh:1661 mints the id. When the person answers the default yes, min finalize-install at line 1688 is the second command. Its stderr goes to a file, so tty is false, this gate passes, and due spawns the child. The id, OS and architecture leave before the closing card at line 1717 prints the disclosure and the off switch. Reply 4403673951 says that an interactive install is never counted before it was told, and the card is the disclosure that the decision relies on. This point is about order against the card, not the decision to count installs without a terminal. An upgrade over an older running daemon can reach the same state through lines 1084 and 1107. Turn the check off for the installer's own min calls, or run the offer after the card.

I took your first option. The installer exports MINIMAL_UNDER_INSTALLER=1 before anything runs, and the hook does nothing at all under it: no id, no disclosure, no request, no notice. That covers the probe, the finalize-install run and the daemon stops on an upgrade; the first own command after the install mints the id, after the card. install_test.sh's stub min records the variable on every call, and the fresh-install case checks every call had it.

low · This page says that the installer keeps your sessions. low · A reinstall can print a stale notice. The installer rewrites install.toml but leaves latest in update-check.json. Take a person who uses only bare min, so the cached 0.7.2 was never told. The channel moves on, and the person installs 0.7.3. The next min ls prints min 0.7.3: the stable channel is now at 0.7.2, which is false and points at an update that the person does not need. Nightly moves daily, so that channel reaches this case most easily. The next check ends it. This is the only reader of the cached latest, so the fix is local: tie the answer to the key that it was fetched for, or clear it when the key changes.

The answer now keeps the installed key it was asked for (latest_key), and the notice requires it to match the running install's key, so a reinstall to 0.7.3 never prints the 0.7.2 answer and the next check replaces it. an_answer_for_another_key_is_not_told covers it.

low · read_install never relates the per-user file to the running binary. A target/debug/min or a copy in another prefix, on a machine with an installer install, reads that install.toml. It reports channel = stable with the installer's key, and it gets notices such as min 0.8.0-dev.198.ge8f53f6e: the stable channel is now at 0.7.2. The docs say that a build with no install record reports on source, but the record belongs to the user, not to the build. Each developer build also counts as a stable install. Check that the running binary is the one the record describes, for example under the installer's bin directory.

The record now names the binary it describes (bin) and is read only by that binary, with links resolved, so a target/debug/min or a copy in another prefix reports as source and gets no notice. The docs' source row and spec R6.1b say so.

…d, plainer text

The hook resolved the config directory through a path that panics with no
home directory, before commands that read no config. It now resolves it
with paths::try_minimal_config_dir_with_override and fails closed.
Each refusal names the file or variable and says what to do next.

The per-user install.toml now names the binary it describes, so a
development build or another copy of min reads as source instead of as
the installer's channel. A cached answer keeps the installed key it was
asked for, so a reinstall never prints a notice meant for the old build.

The installer's own min calls (MINIMAL_UNDER_INSTALLER) take no part in
the check: they run before its closing card discloses it. The request
sends a fixed User-Agent, and the printed text drops design terms.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The probe and finalize-install ran before the closing card, so a fresh
interactive install could send its id before the disclosure printed.
Every min the installer runs now has MINIMAL_UNDER_INSTALLER=1.

install.toml records the binary it installed (bin), and the channel and
the card follow --version rather than a target that could come from the
environment. The card lists every field the request sends.
