feat(diag): min diag upload hands a bundle to the portal that diagnoses it - #1722
Conversation
…es it
`min bug` wrote a tarball and told you to send it to the dev team. For a
person that is an issue form and an attachment. For an agent it was a dead
end: nothing to attach it to, and no way past the portal's Turnstile
challenge, which asks whether a human is at the keyboard.
min bug --upload --context "min up hangs at 'booting' and never returns"
collects and sends in one command and prints two URLs — the page a person
reads, and the same diagnosis as JSON for a caller that would rather poll.
`min diag upload <path>` sends a bundle collected earlier or handed over by
someone else, and `min diag collect` is `min bug` under the `<noun> <verb>`
name. `min bug` keeps working: it is what every existing bug report asks for.
The token comes from the first of `--token`, `$GITHUB_TOKEN`, `$GH_TOKEN`,
then `gh auth token`, so an agent or a CI job usually has nothing to set up.
The portal uses it once to ask GitHub which account it belongs to — that
account is what its daily quota counts — and never stores it.
The upload runs after the bundle is on disk, never instead of it. A machine
broken enough to be worth diagnosing is one where the network may be broken
too, and collecting the bundle again is the expensive half.
Needs gominimal/agent-runtime#193, which is what lets a token stand in for
the challenge.

…redirects Three findings from review. `reqwest` follows up to ten redirects by default, to any host. Joining the portal's path to the endpoint the operator named was meant to keep the bytes on that host, and a 3xx walked straight around it. No redirects now. `min diag upload` takes whatever path it is given, so the 64 MB ceiling was only ever enforced by the portal, after the whole file had been pulled into memory to be hashed. The length is checked first. And `--token` offered CI's `GITHUB_TOKEN`, which is an app installation token: it names no user, so the portal refuses it. Both the flag's help and the no-token error say a user token is wanted and what a workflow should use. `unwrap_err()` on a `Result<Uploaded, _>` needs `T: Debug`, and the two tests added for the redirect and size-cap review findings call it. The struct is two Strings, so the derive is the whole fix.
The upload presents a GitHub token, and the endpoint is the caller's to name, so an `http://` portal put that credential on the wire in clear. Parse the endpoint and require https, allowing plain http only to a loopback host, which is how the portal is served while it is worked on. Checked before the bundle is read, for the same reason the length is: a refusal should not cost a file read. The trailing-slash trim moves into the same function, so the two URLs the upload builds still cannot differ by one.

The loopback exception lets the upload speak plain http because the request does not leave the machine. reqwest honours HTTP_PROXY by default, so that was not guaranteed: a proxy in the environment, with NO_PROXY not covering the loopback host, would have carried the bearer token off the host through the one case allowed for being local. Build the client with `no_proxy()` when the endpoint is loopback http. HTTPS endpoints keep the configured proxy behaviour.
Neither round trip had one, and reqwest applies no default, so a portal that accepted the connection and then said nothing would hang `min bug --upload` indefinitely. The rest of the module already wraps every network operation in a timeout; this was the exception. The deadline is on connect and on inactivity rather than on the whole request: a bundle runs to 64 MiB and may be going over a slow link, so a total timeout would cut off an upload that is merely slow.

The read deadline covers a portal that accepts the connection and then says nothing. It does not cover a peer that accepts the bytes and stops draining them, so the request carrying the bundle could still stall without limit. Give each request an overall deadline instead of one builder-wide value: the create carries no bundle and gets 30s, while the upload has to cover 64 MiB over a slow link, so it gets 15 minutes. Bounding it loosely is still better than not bounding it, and cutting off an upload that is merely slow would be the worse failure.
#1684 landed thirteen BugArgs literals in the diag unit tests; merging main brought them onto this branch without the two fields it adds, so the lib test target no longer compiled (E0063). Set them the way the tests/bug.rs helper does: no upload, an empty portal.

The terminal bail! error omits $GH_TOKEN from the remedies even though resolve_token reads it. The rung order is --token, $GITHUB_TOKEN, $GH_TOKEN, gh auth token (lines 256-277), so a user whose only token lives in $GH_TOKEN is told to "set $GITHUB_TOKEN" — a variable that is not the one that would fix it. The doc comment on the function (lines 242-247) correctly names both env vars, so the runtime message is the one place the enumeration drifts. Suggest "set $GITHUB_TOKEN or $GH_TOKEN" so the message matches what the code actually checks.

It must be a user token: theGITHUB_TOKENa GitHub Actions job gets automatically is an app installation token, which names no user, so a workflow needs a PAT. Both the flag help and the no-token error say so.Decisions worth a second look
The upload runs after the bundle is on disk, never instead of it. A machine broken enough to be worth diagnosing is one where the network may be broken too, and collecting the bundle is the expensive half. A failed upload leaves the archive behind and says why.
The
uploadpath the portal returns is joined to the--endpointthis command was given, and refused unless it starts with/; redirects are not followed. Following an absolute URL from the response would let a portal redirect a machine's diagnostics to a host the operator never named, and since reqwest follows up to ten redirects to any host by default, the path guard alone did not achieve that. Review caught it;Policy::none()now does. The bundle is read whole rather than streamed, after its length is checked against 64 MB. Review pointed out that
min diag upload <path>takes an arbitrary file, so without the local check the ceiling was only enforced by the portal after the whole thing had been read to hash it. With the check the memory is bounded and known — and the create request has to declare the exact byte count and sha256 anyway, which a stream would not save us computing.--context,--tokenand--endpointare inert on a collect without--upload.
