fix: assert guest egress in the session e2e so a lost gvproxy switch fails the proof - #1392
Conversation
Every VM lane wires the gvproxy switch that provides a guest's egress (NAT + DNS), but scripts/session-e2e.sh never asserted egress works. gvproxy resolution is best-effort and never errors, so a lane whose switch setup silently no-ops boots switchless and still reports green, surfacing later as a spurious "could not resolve host". Add one assertion to the existing session-exec proof: from inside the live session, curl two HTTPS hosts and require HTTP:200 (two hosts so a pass is real resolution, not one cached answer). The shell stack already composes curl, so no package is added; on failure the message names the gvproxy switch and the fail path dumps the guest boot console, so the next occurrence reads as "no switch", not "DNS is broken". Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope matches the title and body: one 24-line addition to scripts/session-e2e.sh that asserts guest egress from inside the live session, nothing else. The gate (SEED_DIR/SEEDED_MFILE) is the exact condition min session run uses at line 411 for "shell stack guaranteed", and I confirmed against the lane matrix (justfile e2e, ci-linux-kvm, ci-macos, and both nightly smoke lanes pass E2E_PROJECT_DIR=/tmp or self-seed, so the block runs there; only the checkout-as-project smoke lane skips, per intent). Clobber: none — git log -8 -- scripts/session-e2e.sh shows this commit sitting on top of #1378's teardown fix, no silent revert. Correctness: externally I ran the exact two curl probes (example.com/example.org over HTTPS, -w '%{http_code}') — both HTTP:200, no redirects, so the exact-equality check won't trip on the hosts themselves; the exec/quoting pattern matches the sibling exec proofs (including their reliance on exact stdout with RUST_LOG=warn). One finding below on failure attribution. Not checked: the proof itself — exercising it needs a full session (VM or sandbox-capable host), which is build-out-of-bounds here; nothing in the PR's Verification section (fmt/clippy/build/test) exercises this file either, so nobody has shown the new block green on a real lane. The residual unverifiable risk: the session rootfs needs a CA bundle for TLS to example.com — curl and ca-certificates are separate packages in the upstream distro family, and I found no evidence in-repo (rg over crates/) about whether the shell stack ships one; if it does not, every VM lane goes HTTP:000 at once. Worth a just e2e (or the KVM lane) green run before merge.
What ran
5 probe(s), all self-reported — every entry below is the model's own account of what it ran. None of it is host-attested, so none of it can gate a blocking verdict.
Verification log
1. curl -sS -o /dev/null -w 'code=%{http_code} redirect=%{redirect_url}' --max-time 15 https://example.com / example.org — exit 0 · self-reported
Both hosts return 200 with no redirect from this sandbox — the exact-match on HTTP:200 and the no-
-Lchoice are sound.
2. rg -n 'E2E_PROJECT_DIR|E2E_VM|session-e2e' .github/workflows/ci-linux-native.yml ci-linux-kvm.yml ci-macos.yml nightly.yml justfile — exit 0 · self-reported
VM lanes pass E2E_PROJECT_DIR=/tmp -> SEED_DIR branch opens the new block; the no-env native lane self-seeds (SEED_DIR set) so it runs there too; the checkout-as-project smoke lane has .minimal/minimal.toml so it skips — matching the seeded-shell gate.
3. git log --oneline -8 -- scripts/session-e2e.sh — exit 0 · self-reported
Head of file history is this commit; prior commit is the #1378 teardown fix — nothing reverted or overwritten.
4. rg -n 'SEED_DIR|SEEDED_MFILE' scripts/session-e2e.sh — exit 0 · self-reported
Gate reuses the exact condition of the task-run proof at line 411 (own seed => shell stack => curl guaranteed in-session).
5. rg -rn 'ca-certificates|/etc/ssl|cacert' crates/ — exit 1 · self-reported
No in-repo evidence about a CA bundle in the session rootfs; the
shellstack's curl/TLS composition lives upstream (pinned by locked_commit) and is unverifiable without a build.

The failure branch cannot support the attribution its own message and the block comment make. Only %{http_code} is captured (stderr is dumped but never inspected), and HTTP:000 / empty stands in for every failure mode: lost NAT/DNS (the switch case), plain DNS failure, a TLS failure — e.g. the session rootfs missing a CA bundle, where curl -sS exits 60 mid-handshake — and even a mnl session exec transport failure (then $egress_out is empty and 'got ' is blamed on egress). To distinguish, the block would need curl's exit code or %{errormsg} and a coarse split (exec failed vs. curl failed vs. HTTP!=200) before asserting the switch theory. As written, the first real-world red on a VM lane could be a cert/dependency problem and the message tells the reader 'read this as no switch, not DNS is broken' — reproducing the one-familiar-story misdiagnosis the PR is explicitly trying to eliminate, because the TLS-vs-switch distinction routes to the same code path. Recommend fetching curl's %{errormsg}/exit code into the message, or at minimum rewording so the gvproxy-switch pointer is one hypothesis, not the verdict.

On a VM lane (E2E_VM='${E2E_VM:-}') this is the gvproxy switch not being wired — a switchless boot has no NAT/DNS, so read this as 'no switch', not 'DNS is broken';"; only %{http_code} was collected, so 000 means DNS, TLS/CA, or an exec-transport failure besides a lost switch.

First verify this against the code yourself. It is model output and
may be wrong. If it is wrong, or the tradeoff was deliberate, say so
and change nothing.

Addressed: capture mnl session exec exit status and fail on nonzero status or non-HTTP:200; reworded the gvproxy-switch pointer as one hypothesis among DNS/TLS/exec-transport failures.

…blip can't red the lane The proof (#1392) demanded HTTP:200 from both example.com and example.org on a single attempt each, which made the native lane depend on two third-party endpoints answering first time. On b2a86d1 example.com returned HTTP:200 and example.org then lost the TLS handshake (curl 35, HTTP:000): the first host had already proven the session's DNS, NAT and TLS all worked, and the lane went red anyway. It surfaced on a docs-only commit because a push to main bypasses the lane's `changes` path filter, so the full native lane runs for every commit on main — the README PR's own CI had those jobs path-skipped, so it merged green. Retry each host up to three times with a short backoff. A session with no NAT/DNS fails every attempt against every host, so the switchless boot this proof exists to catch still fails it; only weather is absorbed. Retried attempts print without `::error::`, so a run that goes on to pass carries no red annotation. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(minimald): one network provider for every sandbox path Spec 017 steps 2, 3, 6 and 7. `net::provider::network_for` is the one place in the daemon that reads a PTask's network mode, and it returns a provider for every mode: the sandbox layer's `HostNet` and `NoNet`, or the own-IP provider, which leases an address in `plan`, relays the tap in `attach` and gives the lease back in `abandon`. Its reservation is a `std` mutex never held across an await, so a launch cancelled between taking the lease and recording it cannot leak it. The tap mechanism is read from the switch's control channel once, with the transport, before the sandbox starts: in-namespace where the daemon is unprivileged (DM2), privileged where it is root inside a microVM (DM1/3/4). Not a fallback — in the x86_64 KVM guest asking for an in-namespace tap destroys the container supervisor before the failure is visible. No deployment model changes mechanism. The session path plans through the provider and attaches through the launch; `PhaseOneAttachGuard` is gone. The task path does the same, so an own-IP session's task gets its own address instead of the host's network (017-005). Its guard is released when the process is reaped, on its own task: `Process::wait` is polled inside a `select!` and can be dropped mid-await, and a release awaited in place would be lost with it. The session e2e gains the own-IP proof, run where a switch exists. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix: retry the session e2e's guest egress proof so one transient TLS blip can't red the lane The proof (#1392) demanded HTTP:200 from both example.com and example.org on a single attempt each, which made the native lane depend on two third-party endpoints answering first time. On b2a86d1 example.com returned HTTP:200 and example.org then lost the TLS handshake (curl 35, HTTP:000): the first host had already proven the session's DNS, NAT and TLS all worked, and the lane went red anyway. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix: pass the guest egress proof on one reachable host, warn on the others Retrying each host fixed the one-blip case but kept the same shape of bug at a longer timescale: an endpoint down for the whole retry window still failed a session whose egress the other host had just proven. The lane is a gate on the session, so the bar is now one host answering across all hosts and attempts. A switchless boot has no NAT and no DNS, so it fails every host on every attempt and still fails the lane — the thing this proof exists to catch cannot be masked by one host answering. A host that fails all its attempts is reported as a warning with its own curl stderr, so a partial fault stays visible rather than being silently absorbed, and the OK line now says how many hosts answered. Every VM lane in
scripts/session-e2e.shwires the gvproxy switch that provides a guest's egress (NAT + DNS), but the proof never asserted egress actually works. Because gvproxy resolution is best-effort and never errors, a lane whose switch setup silently no-ops boots the VM switchless — no network — and still reports green; the break surfaces only later, to a user, as a spurious "could not resolve host" that is not a DNS fault. This adds one assertion to the existing session-exec block: from inside the already-live session, curltwo HTTPS hosts and requireHTTP:200(two distinct hosts, so a pass is real resolution rather than one cached answer). Theshellstack already composescurl, so no package is added; on failure the message names the gvproxy switch and the existingfailpath dumps the guest boot console, so the next occurrence reads as "no switch" rather than "DNS is broken". The check is gated on a seed the script owns — the only case where the shell stack, and thus curl, is guaranteed present in the session — which every native/KVM/macOS lane takes. (informed by docs/specs/03-spec-networking/test-plan.md, whose TC1b records in-sandbox curl→200 as the host-egress proof and TC1 curl→000 as the no-egress case.)Verification
