docs(specs): add spec 017, one network provider for every sandbox - #1354
twitchyliquid64 wants to merge 8 commits into
Conversation
Proposes a refactor of the sandbox networking code. Today the own-IP setup lives in the minimald session layer: it allocates the lease, computes the tap parameters and owns the switch-refcount rollback, because sandbox2's `Network` trait can only describe post-spawn work. The same values then pass through four crates, and only one of the two paths that spawn a sandbox applies the trait at all — which is why an own-IP session's tasks silently fall back to `HostNet`. The spec gives `Network` a plan/attach/abandon shape, moves the launch sequence and the rollback into sandbox2, and reduces minimald to one mode-to-provider factory that the session and task paths share. Written to the new docs/specs/TEMPLATE.md format (the first spec to use it) with EARS requirements, and in ASD-STE100 language. normative NetworkMode-to-NetPlan mapping: NoNet must use an isolated plan,
HostNet must use a host plan, and own-IP mode must use an isolated plan with
deployment-specific tap and resolver settings. Ensure this contract makes
requirement 012-006 testable.
- Around line 62-65: Update the Sandbox::launch cancellation path so dropping
the launch future owns an executable cancellation guard that invokes
Network::abandon exactly once, rather than merely creating an unpolled
AbandonFuture. Ensure cleanup works both after plan() completes and while plan()
is pending, and add coverage for both cancellation scenarios.
- Around line 232-238: Update the specification around
sandbox2::Config::with_network, Sandbox::isolate_netns(), and network_for to
explicitly define whether custom Network values are trusted, constrained, or
removed when they conflict with network_mode. Document the migration path and
ensure the selected behavior preserves 012-006 enforcement for NoNet and own-IP
sandboxes.
- Around line 201-203: Expand the provider contract around the attach, abandon,
and teardown symbols to define the AttachFuture result, ownership transitions
from plan through attach or abandon, and the owner of rollback for attach
failures. Specify exactly-once tap and reservation cleanup, including whether
abandon is invalid once attach starts, and document the required state-machine
behavior for each transition.

The task story read as an exec into a running session's namespaces, which is a different path (`nsenter.rs`, `setns(2)`). The task exec path builds its own sandbox, and a task run mints a session of its own, so a task is a PTask like an interactive session or a build. 012-005 now states the general rule — the mode of a PTask reaches the sandbox of that PTask — and keeps the session-inheritance case as a sub-bullet, which is where the drop to the host network belongs. Adds a non-goal and an open question for the missing mode option on a task run, which hardcodes the host network today.
