Aetna Ignored Its Own Written Authorization – Months of Appeals and Still No Resolution
My experience with Aetna has been absolutely unacceptable.
Before my scheduled surgery, Aetna issued written authorization specifically stating: **"Pay at Highest in Network Benefit – Network Deficiency."** I relied on that written authorization when proceeding with my surgery.
Despite having this written authorization, Aetna subsequently processed the claims using out-of-network benefits, leaving me responsible for thousands of dollars in medical expenses.
When I challenged this decision, Aetna's first-level appeal determination stated that there was "no record of a precertification request."
How can a company issue written authorization and then turn around and claim there is no record of that authorization?
This has dragged on for MONTHS.
I have submitted documentation, made countless phone calls, explained the situation repeatedly, and gone through the formal appeals process. I am now at the second-level appeal stage, still trying to get Aetna to honor its own written authorization.
There have also been discrepancies involving my deductible and out-of-pocket accumulations, creating additional problems with other medical bills. One related medical bill has even gone to collections while this matter remains unresolved.
And just when I thought the process could not become more frustrating, I contacted Aetna to request an update on my second-level appeal. Instead of receiving an actual status update or information about the current appeal, Aetna sent me the original determination from months ago.
Think about that. I am months into an appeal process, at the SECOND level of review, and when I ask for an update, I am sent the same old decision I have already received and disputed.
This is not customer service. This is not accountability. And this is certainly not how a health insurance company should treat its members.
People purchase health insurance so they can have some assurance that when they need medical care, their coverage will be there. I followed the authorization process, obtained written approval, and proceeded with medical care based on what Aetna told me. Now I am left fighting to have the company honor its own documentation.
The financial burden, time, stress, and endless effort required to get a legitimate issue addressed have been exhausting.
**I am asking Aetna to honor the written authorization it issued, correctly process my claims according to that authorization, and correct the resulting financial discrepancies.**
Aetna needs to take responsibility, conduct a meaningful review of this matter, and provide an actual resolution instead of continuing to recycle old denial letters.
I would strongly encourage anyone considering Aetna to look beyond the promises of coverage and consider what happens when something goes wrong. Getting a problem resolved should not require months of appeals and an extraordinary amount of persistence from the very person paying for the insurance.
Bad prescription service
Bad prescription service. I had a prescription of buproprion go bad and they said they would replace it for free. Now I am being charged $45 to replace it and they say it's because I'm refilling it early. The only reason it's being refilled early is because the other pills went bad. They said no charge but evidently that means I'm charged $45.
They are way above my previous…
They are way above my previous insurance. I seldom have a copay and when I do its very low. When calling customer service they have always been very friendly, polite, informative and very helpful. I can't recommend this insurance enough

Worst company to work with
My son was in a treatment for an autoimmune disorder before we moved to Aetna. The treatment t had been approved by our former insurance plan with BCBS. The treatment has been denied three times by Aetna even though it has been recommended by three physicians. The peer to peer review has not even with an rheumatologist. He didn’t even let our doctor speak. Every time we need to talk with member services asking for statuses or an explanation, they don’t speak English, they don’t know what they are talking about. One time there was a rooster in the background. Not sure where their customer service is working from. It has been a disaster working with Aetna. The worst health insurance company ever. We regret so much we made the change from BCBS.

I would give zero stars if I could
I would give zero stars if I could. I had signed up for a Meta gap supplemental insurance plan and then watched as my premiums skyrocketed. Not only that but several times they attempted to take withdrawals from my bank account twice in a month. Fortunately, my bank caught them. Tried to cancel today and had to deal with two utterly incompetent and unprofessional agents for Aetna. Contradicted one another and were extremely hostile when I am my agent for my new policy tried to get clarification on the cancellation and when I would get a refund, the first was a Filipino, who clearly didn’t speak English and or was an AI agent didn’t understand questions, weird delay, and then when she would speak, it sounded stilted and artificial. This AI agent said we would have to call a different number to arrange for a refund and literally did not could not answer any questions. So we called back. We got someone who seemed to be competent at first, but the conversation fell apart when they wanted to argue absolutely every question we asked. I’m surprised that agent has a job because it clearly wasn’t personal to us. They likely treat everyone they talk to this way.
Worst experience. Totally incompetent offshore and onshore customer service outrageous prices.
Scam
Atena removed all gastroenterologists that provide endoscopies for all of Austin.
You can't get proper gastro coverage in Austin.
Do not I repeat do not go with this…
Do not I repeat do not go with this company. I am paying for insurance. I broke my foot a while ago. They denied me coverage to pay for my orthotics. They gave me the complete runaround saying things that I didn’t understand. They even flat out lied and said it was covered.. I now realize that was only to put me off, so that it’s now too late.. Unbelievable!!! They made it extremely hard. Why pay for something that sucks you guys stay away from this company I repeat stay away from this company. This is the worst experience I’ve ever ever had with insurance company. I’ve called them multiple times. They act really nice but it’s complete BS they are corrupt number one. They are fraud number two. They suck number three do not and I repeat. Do not use these this insurance company.
Omg this is the worst insurance
Omg this is the worst insurance. No wonder that are doing some heavy advertising on TV. DO NOT BE FOOLED. I pay through my employer and its PPO Advantage Care. You don't get anything different through a HMO. DO NOT USE THEM.
AETNA
AETNA: $98,000 IN DISPUTED MEDICAL CLAIMS WHILE MY HUSBAND BATTLES CANCER
If you are considering Aetna for health insurance, please read this.
My husband was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer in 2026. He underwent a radical prostatectomy at Johns Hopkins on June 23, 2026. His cancer was not completely eliminated, and he has required continuing treatment.
Instead of being able to concentrate on my husband's health, I have spent countless hours fighting Aetna over medical claims totaling approximately $98,000.
In June, Aetna initially refused to cover his scheduled cancer surgery. I spent TWO FULL DAYS dealing with Aetna, my former employer, and benefits administrators to get his coverage straightened out so the procedure could proceed.
Now, months later, I have discovered numerous unresolved claims, including a $24,708 claim for an April 15 hospitalization.
I believe Aetna was responsible for this claim under the applicable insurance and coordination-of-benefits rules. Yet I have had to pursue appeals and escalate the matter to get it reconsidered.
After contacting Aetna again in October, I was told the claim would be reprocessed. That does not erase the time, stress, or administrative burden this has placed on our family.
What infuriates me most is that we PAID for this insurance.
My husband is battling cancer. We should be concentrating on his treatment and recovery, not spending days navigating insurance denials, contradictory information, and unresolved claims.
I have filed complaints with insurance regulators and am pursuing additional federal oversight and legal guidance.
I am sharing our experience because I want other patients and families to know what we have encountered.
Aetna needs to explain why these claims were denied or delayed, resolve every claim for which it is responsible, and stop forcing patients and families to fight for benefits they are entitled to receive.
If you have experienced similar problems with Aetna, I encourage you to document your experience, preserve your Explanation of Benefits statements, and report it to the appropriate regulators.
Patients deserve accountability. Cancer patients especially deserve to focus on getting well—not fighting their insurance company.
My close relative said.......
It is a clear, honest, and reliable service that takes out all theeeee others
Before you sign up with Aetna look…don't sign up with Aetna terrible company
Before you sign up with Aetna look elsewhere I've had them for 2 years and they've been the worst company I ever had I've been denied services over and over that they carry they don't live up to what they talk about they don't even return calls or emails or anything every company I deal with does want to deal with them so it's like having nobody so think before you change
Refused to provide coverage when…
Refused to provide coverage when needed. Failed to reimburse and pay claims. Not a good health insurance option.
Worst insurance company
Worst insurance company. My mother is medically able to be discharged from the hospital to a rehab facility for her broken hip and Aetnavtakes up to 7 days to approve the rehab. So she sits in the hospital waiting for a paper pusher to approve.
Extremely Disappointed with Aetna Federal Health Insursnce
If I could zero stars I would. I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with Aetna and the level of service I have received as a federal employee enrolled in their health insurance plan.
As someone living with diabetes, I depend on prescribed medications to properly manage my condition and maintain my health. Unfortunately, Aetna has repeatedly denied coverage for medication prescribed by my physician without providing me with a clear or reasonable explanation for these decisions.
What makes this situation more frustrating is the fact that I pay a substantial amount of money for what is supposed to be quality health insurance coverage
At what point does health and well-being of the patient become a priority. Managing a chronic medical
Condition is challenging enough without having to fight an insurance company.
Aetna is very disappointing
I had my Surgeon perform an evaluation of my left shoulder after I attempted to lift a bag of groceries out of from my suv. Unbeknownst to me they were caught in the net and I kept lifting when all hell broke loose and the pain was incredible. He determined that I most likely re-tore it as I had rotator cuff surgery in 2022. He requested an MRI and Aetna quickly said no. I have to do physical therapy first. Surgeon says not a good idea. He also isn't going to attempt a peer to peer to dicuss why I need this so I'm finding a different Surgeon. I will notify my human resources of the circumstances
Trash company
Trash company, like all insurance companies. Will take your money, and have AI deny all your claims. Trash service, very American.
I'm a senior with an Aetna Medicare…
I'm a senior with an Aetna Medicare advantage plan. I went to the dentist for an exam and routine cleaning. The following month I received a bill for a covered service. I called Aetna and the rep called the dentist while I was on hold. The rep came back told me he explained to the provider the claim was submitted incorrectly. Problem solved? No. I received two or three more bills and made two or three more calls to Aetna. I was told they can't reach provider and to file a grievance. Grievance was filed and a few days received a call from that department. I was unable to take the call but I returned the call several times and left a few messages. Haven't heard anything since. I took it upon myself to call the dentist and explained what was going on. I was told to disregard the bill and I won't receive any more. My question is why couldn't Aetna resolve this matter? With prices going up and you getting less for that money you would think you would get customer service. Unfortunately it's most of the insurance companies practice charge more and give less. I have Aetna insurance so my review is about them. My took place over four months.
Horrible customer service. fter 3 representatives not even…
After 3 representatives not even getting both my name and address wrong. They couldn’t simply get the 2027 prices for ozempic I’m switching my drug plan.
