Slow and Inflexible Experience

The letting agency I am renting through uses Rightmove’s referencing system to carry out background checks. Unfortunately, the process is very slow and extremely inflexible. Everything has to fit into predefined categories, which are often poorly designed, and there is no opportunity to provide explanations or additional context.
For example, even if you have recently signed a new employment contract with a higher salary, the system may still assess you based on your previous income. The referencing process offers very little flexibility and does not accommodate common real-life situations. Overall, the entire process is unnecessarily slow and frustrating.
If you are planning to rent a property, I would recommend checking in advance whether the landlord or letting agent uses this system, as it can make the application process far more difficult than it needs to be.

Hello Barja,

We’re very sorry to hear about your recent experience with the referencing process.

Our team follows a clear and consistent set of criteria to help ensure that every applicant is treated fairly and equally. However, we recognise that standard processes may not always account for every individual circumstance. Where appropriate, we can review applications on a case-by-case basis.

I would be keen to review your application in more detail, understand what happened and establish whether there is any further clarity we can provide regarding the process and outcome. Your feedback may also help us identify opportunities to improve the experience for future applicants.

If you could email RLTcomplaints@rightmove.co.uk with your full name and the relevant property details, I will ensure that a full investigation is carried out.

Thanks,
Beth
