Beware of McRent Stockholm: Unjust charges for normal wear and tear
We rented a motorhome from McRent Stockholm (operated by Solhem Husbil AB) for the second time in summer 2026. While the initial service was acceptable, the rental ended in a complete disappointment due to unacceptable business practices.During the trip, a cord on the flyscreen door snapped during regular, proper use. There was absolutely no misuse or accident involved, which the staff on-site even acknowledged. We dutifully reported this minor defect upon returning the vehicle. The subsequent handling by the station was highly unprofessional: out of our 17,000 SEK deposit, they immediately withheld 11,000 SEK (~1,000 €). Since the vehicle was nearly brand new, this issue should have clearly been covered under warranty or classified as normal wear and tear. Instead, McRent shifted their operational risk entirely onto the customer.A week later, we were presented with a bill for the full 11,000 SEK for an alleged complete replacement of the flyscreen door—issued by Solhem Husbil AB themselves. The fact that the repair was internally invoiced by the licensee raises serious concerns regarding the transparency and legitimacy of this absurdly high amount. Conclusion: This behavior is unacceptable. I strongly advise anyone against renting a vehicle from this particular station.
Great Road Trip
We hired a motorhome in May 26 via April at the Preston Branch (so sorry for delay in writing). We were shown all the options prior to booking and talked through what we wanted to do and where we were thinking of going and April gave us excellent advice she mentioned that speeding up collection would be easier if we watched an online video showing us round the vehicle and how to deal with everything. When collecting April was fantastic, she talked us through everything and helped us get on the road an hour earlier than planned which was so helpful. The Motorhome was excellent, loads of storage, very clean and everything we needed within it. We brought our own bedding and pillows but you can hire them if you prefer. We went to Great Yarmouth, Brighton and Devon and had a fantastic and very different holiday as we usually go abroad. We were so lucky with the weather too and all the sites were lovely. Our only downside was we wished we had booked it for longer.
Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to hire. Go see April at Preston super helpful.
McRent Vienna
McRent Vienna
We had the most terrible experience where we rented a camper with a problem with AdBlue, we called the first day and was told “just to fill it up”. It was full but the company didn’t bother helping us.
We called several times during the vacation because it kept making alarms and telling us to put AdBlue on, even though the tank was full.
We even tried to put more on, but the tank was totally full.
Fast forward to the day where we are coming back with the camper and they charge us with 200 € bill because of the smallest scratch which nobody knew if it was there all along or if we had caused.
No compensation for us driving the camper with the AdBlue problem, and calling several times. No proper communication, instead a boss names Helmuth or something came and insisted on that we payed the bill, because of the time it would take for their mechanics to fix the scratch, which we still didn’t think was something we did.
No compensation for all the time we spent trying to figure out the AdBlue problem.
We will never rent from them again.
Our vacation was very different from what we had expected and not for the better.
AND, as we were waiting for our train some time later they called and somewhat accused us for putting soap in the AdBlue tank!
Just don’t rent at McRent, unless you want bad service, and accusations!
McRent Ireland
I recently hired a McRent motorhome in Ireland, it being my second time in Ireland and also having a previous McRent rental in the UK. I have met many welcoming and friendly people during my time in Ireland, but I am proud to say that Angela has clearly been the person who has earnt my most respect. Angela manages the McRent Dublin base for collections, returns and everything in between those dates. Angela exudes a special understanding of what customers need to ensure a trouble-free experience. I found her work ethic to be well above the norm found in many organisations, which is supported by her name being mentioned no less than 25 times in the Google reviews. There are other reviews which refer to 'staff' which may also include Angela. The organisation responses include 'we' and 'our team' and occasional praise towards the contribution by Angela but she is the face of the company in Dublin.
As with many types of Google company reviews, the responses tend to become boringly generic and lack any true appreciation of their employees. For some, the McRent Dublin collection and return location can be particularly daunting due to its location and appearance whilst I understand the difficulty to situate the business near to the airport. Fortunately, the presence of Angela soon allays any initial fears some might have about a holiday plan being a scam, as must be experienced by some people, and the appearance commented in the reviews.
I truly hope rival motorhome companies in Ireland are reviewing their competitors reviews and heed the reviews made about Angela's performance. This includes but not limited to, individualised special treatment, foresight, high standards of customer service delivery and integrity, in the dealings she has with either 'locals' or people such as myself who have travelled great distances and expense for an enjoyable experience in this country. Thank you Angela and I wish you well with everything.
McRent Preston would recommend as they…
McRent Preston would recommend as they were very helpful throughout our booking experience, hire period and after service. The Motorhome we hired suited our needs, it had everything we asked for. I cannot thank them enough. We are looking forward to our next trip.
11 out of 17 days we had to sit in a repair shop!
What a terrible experience and company. Over the 17 days we rented a campervan in New Zealand we had 11 days of detours and waiting in repair shops.
Throughout the trip our fridge was not working and we had 2 young kids with us which meant we needed to keep food and milk cold. 2 days into the trip we were asked to return to swap the vehicle but the fridge on the new vehicle was not working either! Not only this but our kitchen sink had a leak on the 2nd vehicle we were given.
Mcrent have offered some compensation for all the troubles but the amount only equates to 70% of the time we had issues and detours.
Do yourself a favour and book with another company who maintain their vehicles better
Very disappointing experience
We recently rented a campervan from this company in Porto, Portugal, and unfortunately our experience was very disappointing. Here’s what happened:
1. Extremely long pickup process
When we arrived to collect our campervan, it wasn’t ready. The entire pickup process ended up taking around six hours — half a day of our holiday lost before we even started driving.
2. Bite issues from the mattresses
During the trip, both of us developed multiple bites after sleeping on the mattresses. We reported this to the headquarters and provided photos. They told us that, according to their assessment, the bites were not caused by bedbugs. Regardless of the explanation, the fact is that we experienced significant discomfort and had to deal with it throughout our trip.
3. Unpleasant smell while driving
The campervan had a noticeable and unpleasant smell whenever it was in motion — even when the toilet was completely empty. Exactly the kind of issue you do not want on a road trip.
4. Poor condition inside the van
The fridge smelled old, several cupboards didn’t close properly, and overall the interior felt very worn and not well prepared.
When we raised all these issues with the head office in Germany afterward, the responses felt dismissive. They insisted our pickup timing was the issue (even though we actually collected the van a day later than originally agreed) and did not seem interested in checking the details properly. The overall attitude came across as unhelpful and uncaring.
Overall: A very disappointing rental experience, from the condition of the campervan to the way our concerns were handled. I hope the company takes feedback like this seriously, because as it stands, I cannot recommend them.
DO NOT USE McRent NEW ZEALAND
We were expecting to have a great New Zealand holiday and instead had a nightmare because of McRent. We were given a campervan with pre existing problems that ranged from chips in the windscreen that they had us get fixed in our own time at our cost though they weren't caused by us, the bathroom door slammed open and closed every corner we took (their suggestion to fix was duct tape), we had a cupboard over thestove open and a heavy oven tray fall out and damage the bench and then there was a small scuff on a side mirror that they used our insurance to fix (all it needed was a quick buff). They had shown us half of the insurance details and then said we owed over $2000 for a small dent in the benchtop. This could be fixed by a professional for under $300. We needed to use our travel insurance to cover that one. They denied any fault and were absolutely terrible to deal with.
Very happy with our 10 day rent in…
Very happy with our 10 day rent in Norway. Amazing price, amazing motorhome, and everything super easy. 100% recommendable. We read some bad reviews and were a bit scared, but we ended up very very happy.
5 stars for McRent London!
These reviews are mis-leading. McRent is an international franchise, so it very much depends on the location you rent from. I hired my motorhome form McRent London and they were superb. The motorhome was practically brand new and very clean. The beds were extremely comfortable and it was very easy to drive. Service on collection and return was exemplary. Don't be put off by bad reviews for rentals in Porto, Vienna or Munich. McRent LONDON will not disappoint.

McRent Oslo Are an Exceptional Place to Rent Motorhome
There are some terrible reviews on-line about campervan rental companies, including McRent in Europe, NZ & elsewhere. Shoddy vehicles & dodgy charges on return seem to be the biggest gripes. We recently enjoyed a 4-week McRent campervan hire out of Oslo in Norway & could not speak highly enough of the McRent staff & our travel experience in our McRent camper. We booked a Family Standard motorhome for the 2 of us & the manager Paola & technician Justinas were totally awesome. We had some minor issues with the water pump & fridge function & McRent assisted with troubleshooting & eventually delivered us a replacement motorhome 500km from Oslo, so we could continue on our trip with minimum disruption. The whole rental process was fair, transparent & well priced and the motorhome return experience was straightforward, with no deductions from our deposit + reimbursement of a ferry tariff that the McRent AutoPASS missed. In summary, we had a sensational trip from Oslo to the top of the Lofoten Islands, through the Arctic Circle and back through Sweden. The McRent Oslo depot was great to deal with and we having nothing but respect for the business-like way that Paola and her McRent team look after customers. We will absolutely do it again. A few tips & tricks below:
• We started with a manual Citroen/Sunlight motorhome which was replaced with an auto Ford/Dethleffs motorhome –the auto was much easier to drive!
• One of our vehicles had summer tyres and one had winter tyres, & it’s worth checking what your vehicle has for longer trips during a changing season?
• We travelled 4409km averaging 9.51L/100km & neither the manual/auto or summer/winter tyres made any substantial difference to fuel economy
• The Norwegian gas bottles can’t be refilled or exchanged in Sweden which was a major problem after crossing the border & running out of gas!
• Neither motorhome had a functioning TPMS & in-cab, tyre pressure monitoring is super reassuring?
• Our Citroen/Sunlight motorhome had a reversing camera & our Ford/Dethleffs didn’t & that made the Ford more difficult to manoeuvre.
• The Citroen/ Sunlight camper had a really nice leather interior, whereas the Ford/Dethleffs camper had a darker fabric interior that was a bit drab.
• One motorhome had remote central locking of the camper that was super convenient, whereas the other one had to be key-locked every time.
In summary, we rate McRent-Oslo as an excellent supplier for a Norway motorhome rental and cannot recommend Paola and her team too highly as fantastic people to deal with.
what can i say but the biggest scam ive…
what can i say but the biggest scam ive ever come across. Rented a van at the cost of 2338.in Munich for 11 days which included so called kitchen kit which isn't fit for purpose, no cleaning equipment with the exception a hard brush no dustpan/brush etc. picked up van on the 5 Aug was given a quick walk around the van, was made aware of damage to the wing mirror which had bad scratching on it (which i realise now that the previous renters probably lost their 1500 damage deposit, were probably told it had to to replaced which obviously did't happen) , we stayed on official campsites so was never in an area where damage could have been done. we dropped the van back exactly as we found it but to our disbelief 3 days later our credit card had a charge of 1500 euro for alleged damage, the photos are not in real time no date no live video of when they did the inspection of the van,
They showed photos of miniscule scratches which in all honesty were probably there on pick-up and unless you have hours and a magnifying glass there is no way you would be able to see them at a glance. As the company include both rental &repair you've no way of knowing if they actually replace the any of the items your being billed for. Another was the van wasn't cleaned properly, in all honesty the van was cleaned they photographed small bits foot dirt/dust,im sure every van
should be valet before passing to the next customer for hygiene reasons...We did leave water and some beers unopened in the fridge but no food items which I thought would be OK as someone would use them but no they said we didn't clear the fridge out.
If you've any sense I would stay away from this company and if you read other reviews it seems to be a way of getting the 1500 from every renter regardless of how you drop the van back, had a great holiday up until we got the credit card bill. left a bad taste and ruined some really good memories
Completely unsatisfactory
This van's kitchen utensils not fit for purpose, or absent, so many extra expenses incurred as we could not camp independently as fridge didn't work on battery and hot water didn't work on gas so we had to pay 100's of pounds for sites to plug into. Missed many of our planned itinerary because of shortcomings and couldn't get them fixed as we had no time to waste in the 24 nights hire. Recompensed 200 pound for the fridge not working properly but this a drop in the bucket of the 100's extra this motorhome cost us in addition to the most expensive hire we ever had. Bedding inadequate, no outdoor chairs to use under awning, completely uncomfortable seating. A totally dismal hire which ruined our bucket list holiday from Australia to the UK of a lifetime and of which we will never have the opportunity to do again.
Mixed bag of an experience for us
Mixed bag for us. We rented via McRent Vienna for travel to the Austrian GP. Friendly enoug greeting, but the handover was relatively cursory - basic walk thru, omitted to tell us the gas was turned off (took 15 minutes to figure that out later) and didn’t demo the awning (more on this later). The van was missing important safety info - we didn’t know the height and width of the van (not filled in on the window sticker for the driver) which nearly caused major grief in roadworks after pickup. The rental of the bedding pack at nearly £240 was a joke - 4 basic ikea single duvets and covers with the crappiest pillows all of which could have been bought new and thrown away for half the price. The kitchen kit was basic and there was nothing else provided, so we had to buy and throw away cleaning items, toilet roll etc as we had flown in from the UK. Clearly not geared for our sort of rental. The van itself had some broken fixtures (doors and leaking bathroom tap) but drove reasonably well and the presence of AC was welcome. I noticed on the last day that one of the awning arms was bent but it didn’t prevent the awning from working. On returning the van, McRent tried to stick me with a repair bill until I pushed back hard on the basis that they couldn’t prove that they had demo’ed the awning at pickup. There was also a disagreement about emptying the toilet (what major RV facility doesn’t have the facility?) and they tried to charge €140 to empty it and again I argued that they had not been clear up front about bringing it back empty. They eventually let me empty it myself and dropped the charge. The return process felt tetchy and bad tempered as I felt that they were constantly looking for ways to gouge more money from me. TBH, I’m probably never going to use Mcrent again because of the poor experience.
Avoid McRent.
I would advise you avoid McRent.
This was our experience:
* There was a warning light and dashboard message saying there’s an error with an airbag. Surely this makes the vehicle unsuitable for hiring out?!
* The dashboard around the gear selector was loose. To select a gear, I had to hold the dashboard in with one hard while moving the gear lever with the other. This is very far from ideal when manoeuvring.
* Only one loudspeaker worked, and that one was falling apart with the grill coming off. This was particularly frustrating as we wanted to listen to audio books while we travelled but we were unable to listen to anything at all. The audio module showed an error message about wiring problems.
* The satellite dish didn’t work. It beeped, made noises like a motor is moving, then displays a red ‘error’ light. So no TV, no radio, no music, no audio books.
* None of the steering wheel audio controls worked, but I guess that was unimportant as we couldn’t hear anything.
* The dining table was badly damaged. We found out why the table has so many holes in it when the cupboard over the table opened as we were driving and the contents of the cupboard fall out onto the table. (Yes, there’s another hole in the table now)
* One of the hinges on the toilet door was snapped. (The top one) That put additional strain on the remaining hinges
* Seats were badly stained, especially the driver’s seat
* Only one out of the three USB ports worked, meaning it was very difficult to charge our devices.
* The fresh water hose didn’t have the correct fitting to enable us to get fresh water! We had to buy new fittings at our own expense.
It took many weeks of back’n’forth to get a very small amount of compensation for their poor service spoiling what should have been our holiday of a lifetime. Poor vehicle, terrible service.
We absolutely do not recommend McRent!
We absolutely do not recommend MC Rent Portugal. In the summer of 2022 we rented a 6-person camper for 2 weeks that still looked very new, so that seemed nice. Unfortunately, the water pump broke within a few days and cooking did not work often because there was an incorrect connection to the gas bottle. So we couldn't warm the bottles of milk for our baby. When returning to the airport, McRent did not want to take the toll road/high way to the airport, so we were stuck in traffic for 1.5 hours and almost missed our flight. Now 1.5 years later we receive a traffic fine at home because we did not pay the toll somewhere, even though we had rented a special expensive device in advance through MCRent that paid the toll automatically. McRent says they don't know anything and we should contact the manufacturer of that device. Our confidence in MCRent has completely disappeared because what unexpected bill will we receive next year.
People, if you want a carefree holiday, don't rent from McRent!!
We cannot recommend McRent Portugal…
We cannot recommend McRent Portugal (Parracho). We rented a motorhome for 5 days. We experienced a pump breakdown on day-1. Either due to poor condition or simply lack of maintenance, we were forced to divert from our travelling schedule as nearest McRent auto-shop was +2 hours travelling each side. We submitted a complaint and have not heard any feedback 1 month afterwards. Finally, at drop-off, non-professional staff made sure to charge us a brand new skylight, rather likely due to excessive wear and tear considering age and milage of the rental vehicle. Likely scam that allows abusing from very high deposit fees (1500Eur) to charge customers for new parts sold by same group company that rents motorhomes in an evident conflict of interest. Will never rent Erwin Hymer Group / McRent again.
Motorhome
We just returned from another adventure, absolutely wonderful !
Staff are so helpful on both pick up a return.
Motorhome new clean !
My husband left his wallet an a phone call to let him know it was safe.
Do not rent!
Rental in Portugal did not go well. Staff is not helpful if you have a problem. Deposit is extermely high (€1500) and they will do anything to find the damage so they can keep your deposit. Will never rent here again.

We rented an autocamper from McRent in Kayhude, Hamburg.
When we returned the autocamper was really careful examined for damages.
We had to pay extra 1200 Euro for a really small damage inside the car.
We asked for a detailed invoice, but received nothing.
The Company includes both rental and repair.
We cannot recommend renting at McRent, Hamburg.
