I want to register my disappointment at my recent hertz experience at Dublin airport. I booked with hertz presuming that I would pick up from the airport- terminal 1 or 2.l (this was stated in the confirmation email) Instead I was experienced the uncomfortable and protracted journey off to a field opposite the airport.

I “upgraded” the rental and was assured that I could return the car to the departure terminal. I have just done so, parking in one of the hertz designated spots. When I returned the key I was informed that I was supposed to return the car to terminal 2 (not 1)and would incur a charge of 35 euro. I was asked several times was I a “gold” member - like this matters.

I do not intend to pay this charge and will dispute it with my card provider. I’ve always rented a hertz car, but this has been a shoddy experience and will look elsewhere next time.

I rented the car in Spain for 4 weeks. I got chaarged for damage. Without explanation, no pictures nothing. The European law says that it is not legal to do that. For some reason they don't need to comply with that. No customer service phone number. Only by email. They already charged me and billed me. How is that legal? I have videos and pictures that the cars was fine so I can't understand how they did all that without revising my videos first. I feel terryble after my hols. I did everything they asked me and paid. Why?

I am writing to make a formal complaint…

I am writing to make a formal complaint about my recent experience with an employee at Hertz Dublin. Unfortunately, what should have been a positive experience in Ireland was overshadowed by what I felt was an extremely rushed, intimidating, and misleading return process.

When we returned our rental car and parked it in the designated lot, an employee named Jimmy immediately approached us and insisted that we get out of the vehicle and begin the inspection. Everything happened so quickly that we had very little opportunity to properly assess the vehicle ourselves or understand what was happening.

During the inspection, Jimmy accused us of causing a minor scratch to the front-left hubcap. We immediately told him that we had not caused the damage and that we wanted some time to review the vehicle and consider the matter. Despite this, he rushed us through the process and asked us to sign a form acknowledging the damage.

What concerns me most is that Jimmy then told us not to worry because the €395 charge was merely a hold and that we would ultimately only be charged approximately €40–€50. We relied on that explanation. He then immediately arranged a taxi for us and effectively moved us out of the rental area before we had a reasonable opportunity to question the charge or properly understand what we were signing.

I found the entire interaction extremely confusing and upsetting. Jimmy spoke so quickly that I could barely understand what he was saying, yet we were pressured to sign paperwork concerning a charge that we disputed. At no point did I feel that we were given a fair opportunity to inspect the alleged damage, understand our rights, or contest the claim.

This experience left me feeling as though I had been taken advantage of rather than treated as a valued paying customer. I have since seen numerous negative reviews describing similar experiences with Hertz in Ireland, which makes this situation even more concerning.

I expect Hertz to take this complaint seriously and investigate the conduct of the employee involved. I would also like a full explanation of the €395 charge, including why we were told it was only a temporary hold and that the final charge would be approximately €40–€50.

Please provide me with a detailed response explaining what happened, the basis for the damage claim, and how Hertz intends to resolve this matter.

I have always believed that a reputable international company should treat its customers fairly and transparently. Unfortunately, that was not our experience at Hertz Dublin, and the incident significantly affected what should have been a wonderful trip to Ireland.

Hidden fees not communicated

Hidden fees not communicated and not explained, hidden in small print. Charged an extra 26 euro per day which wasn't communicated in any form to us. Phoned back and had response of basically "tough that's what we do". Will not be using them again. Was already 2-3 times more expensive than hiring in UK or mainland Europe.

Quite possibly the worst hire car…

Quite possibly the worst hire car company out there. Take hundreds of photos of every inch of anything you hire from this set of rogues. Make sure all glass is clean and mark free even down to marks of under 1mm. We were charged 1200 euros to replace the windscreen on a fiat panda with 60000 miles on the clock. 4 tiny marks which weren’t visable to us at the time of hire because the car was covered in dust allowed them to rip off the insurance company. They don’t even have to actually get the repair done - the cars get sold on with any defects still there. A complete rip off. Stressful. Glad we had our own insurance to cover the loss. We will never rent from hertz again or visit Ireland. Terrible experience. I was told by the cheery chappy in Dublin that they had thousands of good reviews - still trying to find them!

Predatory company

1. We were delayed by one day traveling.

2. We contacted Expedia who told us that Hertz might cancel our reservation, so we asked them to put a note on our reservation that we'd be arriving a day late.

3. We tried calling Hertz Ireland twice at high cost long distance rates. In both cases the calls dropped after 15 minutes on hold.

4. I also sent an email letting Hertz Ireland know that we'd be a day late and to please not cancel the reservation.

5. Upon arrival we were told that we'd receive the rental for the original booking amount.

6. At this time, jet lagged, I did not cop on that it was actually approximately THREE TIMES higher than our original reservation.

Predatory company.

Do not rent from Hertz at Shannon…

Do not rent from Hertz at Shannon Airport. They run a scam if you have credit card insurance on supposed windscreen "damage".
My last communication a day ago...
I have notified the car Rental Council of Ireland since Hertz is charging me the full price to replace a windshield that they are never going to replace. Their own damage assessment says "very light". It looks like a bug mark and no renter would recognize that as "damage". They would be looking for cracks or significant chips out of the windscreen. Unfortunately, as a consumer, I believe that future renters of this car will be charged for pre existing damage like I was. Please send me a dated invoice from the windscreen company that replaced it. In the meantime, I feel I must alert via social media not to rent from Hertz at Shannon Airport since 2 out of the 4 car renters in our party had the same "damage" assessment because we had insurance thru a credit card and not directly thru Hertz. An extremely poor business practice to an audience that Hertz assumes are one time customers.

I had to make an emergency trip for my father’s funeral. The service was slow and we had to queue for half an hour. We were hit with very uncompetitive insurance and deposits, the staff laughed at our distress. Having paid an initial £130 deposit on the hire. This was returned when we returned the car with a full tank. Having returned to the uk I discovered hertz have taken £134 from our account with no explanation. I would strongly suggest using Eurocar, which we used a week previously in knock. They were much more competitive and far more helpful service.

Hi Tim Walker,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, and we’re sorry to hear about your disappointment. Upon reviewing the charges, we can confirm that there was no additional €200 charge made to your card. The €200 amount was a pre-authorisation, which is a temporary hold placed on the funds rather than an actual charge. As the vehicle was returned with a full tank of fuel, the pre-authorisation was released following the completion of your rental. Please note that the time it takes for the funds to become available again may depend on your bank or card issuer. If you would like a copy of your invoice or require any further clarification regarding the charges, please contact us at customerservices@hertz.ie or call +353 (0)53 915 2500, and our team will be happy to assist you. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to clarify this matter.

WATCH OUT for the agent at the counter…

WATCH OUT for the agent at the counter making selections for you on whether your charge will be in local currency or your own! They are not allowed to do this, as Visa rules state that the consumer must be shown the choice between being charged in local currency but have clearly been instructed to select it for you. When paying for the damage deductible of nearly $5,000 the agent selected USD on the screen when it showed up for me to select even though I would have picked Euros, and this cost me an additional $300 in conversion fees. The selection is for the consumer to make but they will sneakily try to make it for you, watch out for this. Their insurance is a scam as well, be sure to decline their CDW and use a credit card that has rental car insurance. By "a scam" I mean to say that for paint damage that has independently been assessed by different body shops as being anywhere from 600-900 euros, they will charge you 2500 euros. How are they able to do this? They can inflate the damage costs to around 1300 euros and then add miscellaneous fees on top of that such as charging 500 euros for someone to "evaluate the damage" and 400 euros to "transport the car," etc. I would recommend getting your own insurance via your credit card company or fixing any cosmetic damage occurred during your rental on your own, body shops can do this very cheaply and quickly in Ireland. I paid the price of a whole new car to Hertz for scratches on the wheel, lol. Don't be like me!

Waiting for compliant response

I was initially told that my complaint would receive a response within a maximum of 15 working days. After hearing nothing, I called on the 16th working day and was simply told I should receive a response within the next 24 hours.

Our rental in Ireland completely disrupted what should have been a relaxing holiday. The Nissan Juke supplied by Hertz developed a gearbox fault and was unsafe to drive. Despite repeatedly explaining this, customer support initially expected us to drive it on the motorway to Shannon Airport.

Hertz instead sent a third-party engineer who merely cleared the fault codes before telling us to continue our journey. Thankfully, we insisted on a test drive, where the fault immediately returned. We then spent over 2 and a half hours dealing with contradictory instructions from customer support before eventually being taken to Shannon Airport by the recovery company to collect a replacement vehicle.

The replacement car was described as an "upgrade", but it was much larger than the vehicle we had booked and unsuitable for the narrow rural roads we were travelling on. To make matters worse, the following day the tyre pressure warning came on. An AA technician found the rear tyre had only a temporary repair plug that was slowly leaking, despite us having several days remaining on the rental.

Between the breakdown, poor communication, replacement process, and second vehicle issue, we lost over four hours of our holiday and had to cancel a significant part of our itinerary. We also incurred additional fuel, transport and toll costs.

To top it all off, there are unexplained transactions on my credit card that Hertz has yet to explain.

A very disappointing experience from start to finish. I'm now waiting to see whether Hertz resolves the complaint fairly.

I rented a car on **22 June** (Confirmation: **L6160473729**) and paid an advance deposit that should have been refunded after I returned the vehicle. I returned the car with a **full tank of fuel** and even paid the **road toll charges using my own card**.

Despite this, my deposit has still not been refunded. I have contacted the company several times by email, but they have completely ignored my messages and have not provided any update or explanation.

This level of customer service is extremely disappointing. Keeping a customer's money while failing to respond to emails is unacceptable. I expect my refund to be processed immediately. If this issue is not resolved promptly, I will have no option but to escalate the matter to the relevant consumer protection authorities and continue sharing my experience publicly.
I hope the company takes responsibility and resolves this matter without any further delay.

Thank-you very much

Hertz poor service ruined our day

I am writing in to review the new Hertz 24/7 service that allows people to rent cars by the hour. I had booked a car this morning to take a three hour morning trip with my family. I did this before and I know how to use the app. However, this time when I arrived at the car the app would not allow me to start the rental and get into the car despite telling me that I had the car reserved at 8 am. I wanted to call for help, but guess what? They have no phone service available to get help. Instead they claim to offer 24/7 support through a whatsapp chat. I texted their WhatsApp from two separate numbers repeatedly to get help. An hour later I haven't heard back. We had to abandon our plan for the day and my family is extremely disappointed. What terrible service. I am extremely frustrated and angry and have emailed the company to complain. If you want an hourly car service don't use Hertz!!

I am also going to go to the media to get them to investigate how this company is operating I have been waiting now a month with several mails sent to them ( no reply) but put a reply on here blaming bank ; My bank I trust 100% and said they are not to blame; This is the second time this year has happened and last time was at the same desk as hertz at cork airport but under another car company name : They are still holding over €2300. on my bank card since 23 May which is actually causing me issues as can’t use my card so will be pursuing damages for distress: Been reading reviews on here and other platforms and this seems like a regular occurrence with people ;

Hello Mr. Dan,

Further to our previous communication, we can confirm that the reversal was fully processed on 26 May. To allow us to investigate this further, we kindly ask you to provide a screenshot of your statement of account showing the transaction and send it to customerservices@hertz.ie. Our team will be happy to review this for you. Please note that this was not an actual charge or payment taken from your account. It was a pre-authorisation hold, which means the amount was temporarily reserved against your card and then released following the reversal. As a result, it will not appear as a completed payment transaction on your statement. Thank you for your cooperation, and we look forward to assisting you further.

Initially my experience was good with the reception staff at the desk being friendly and professional.
Unfortunately when I picked up my vehicle the tank wasn’t full, the electrics on the driver’s side door didn’t work and there was a constant alarm going off when the car was idling.
When returning the car I was accused of damaging the windscreen and the operative showed me pictures which were supposedly taken immediately before my pick up. As such he said unless I could prove that the chip was there before my departure I would be charged for a new windscreen. He would not accept my version of events stating that I hadn’t caused the damage. Fortunately for me I had taken pictures of the car myself which showed the windscreen chip clearly so Hertz had no alternative but to back down. Had I not taken my own photos I would have had no defence and would have been expected to pay for a new windscreen.
Very disappointing and it felt as though Hertz were being very disingenuous in pursuing their claim.
