Watch out for hidden extra disbursement fees, overcharging, and customs delays
Update: To send 24 parcels, we were quoted a total of £929.50. We've now paid out a total of £1,634.46 and apparently haven't received all the invoices yet. For a lot of the US parcels we've sent, the customs duty charge has been 36% even though the US tariffs are only 10% on the dates we've sent them. No explanation for overcharging yet. I hope they get back to me at some point.
The website works smoothly and the customer service is usually ok when you contact them for help. However, I was specifically told that there was definitely only a £2 handling fee for Fedex parcels going to the USA plus of course the 10% tariffs themselves. I was told there were no additional costs.
After sending a few test shipments, sure enough I received invoices with £2 handling fees on them and felt safe to proceed sending more parcels.
Seven weeks after sending the first parcel I suddenly received second invoices for the same shipments, for additional "disbursement fees" for each parcel I'd sent to the USA. These fees were an additional £11.60 plus £7.50 per parcel on top of the £2 I'd already paid. So in total I'm paying £21.10 per parcel to Fedex for sorting out the customs duty plus the 10% tariffs.
The problem is, the World Options sales guy I've been chatting to assured me that it was definitely £2 per parcel with Fedex, way cheaper than DHL. That's why I was persuaded to try it rather than using DHL who we'd previously been using. So now I have 20 parcels x £21.10 handling fees each. As I was persuaded the handling fee would only be £2 per parcel, that is all I charged to my customers which means I'm out hundreds of pounds. Surely this is something the sales personnel should be aware of and warn us of. And surely it shouldn't take seven weeks for these additional invoices to come through.
Then the final straw for me was that Fedex decided to stop every single one of my parcels in April to request additional customs information - information they say is required, but which you're not requested to provide on the World Options system. As if that wasn't annoying enough, they contacted me more than four times per parcel requesting the same information, and they contacted my customers too. Meanwhile the parcels are all delayed by 1-2 weeks despite me providing the requested information on the same day they asked for it. It's been quite the waste of time for me. So I'm heading back to DHL who lay out the costs clearly and handle things efficiently. It's a shame because I really wanted this to work out well.
