The ticket machine didn’t work in the…

The ticket machine didn’t work in the bus and I got a 54€ fine from the controllers who got on at the same stop as me, they saw I tried to pay twice and it didn’t work and I didn’t have time to go try the other machine in the front, since they got on at the same stop as me, I’m starting to believe they do it on purpose and make the machine not work before the controllers go in, judging by the other reviews as well…
The machine always worked for the previous 4 days, and I didn’t get controlled

Just had a fantastic holiday in Rome

Just had a fantastic holiday in Rome. Had bought 72 hour tickets. Got on a packed bus, had no idea if I should stamp (my mistake) then an inspector comes, no help with what to do, even though I asked several times. Never experienced such rude staff, got a fine of 54 euros. per person. even though I had a receipt that I had just bought the 72 tickets. But there was no help at all, what an experience. Hope other tourists will take a taxi instead! Very boring experience.

First day in Rome

First day in Rome, I got my ticket with my credit card and I was taking care of my wife’s ticket when this ATAC scammers approached me and bullied me in paying 54 euros for my wife’s ticket and they could clearly see that I was taking care off, they were rude and they clearly have a commission, they followed us in the bus and they were getting their fine no matter what, even worse they targeted a couple of Asians who didn’t speak English and they threatened them and forced them to pay, they were calling the poor guy a trouble man, he didn’t understood a word that they were saying, disgusting and vile, avoid Rome, it’s a tourist trap, the agent number was 71643, a very angry lady with a Napoleon complex, i will file a complaint with consumer protection!

ATAC is running a coordinated shakedown…

ATAC is running a coordinated shakedown that targets tourists through intimidation and a deliberate lack of transparency. My wife and I were ambushed at the terminus—a calculated "last-stop trap" where officials wait to target visitors who have no clear signage or instructions to follow.
The behavior of the officers was absolutely gross and physically intimidating. On our bus alone, half of the passengers were fined; every single one was a tourist, including families with young children and elderly travelers who were visibly distressed and confused. Witnessing uniformed officers use this kind of aggressive "stand-over" tactic to extract money from people under duress is sickening.
This experience was so traumatic that it completely ruined our trip. My wife and I were enjoying our time in Rome until this happened, but the staff’s behavior was so disgusting that we have spent the rest of our stay deciding to just stay in our hotel to avoid further harassment. It is terrifying to imagine how a family with small children would feel being targeted like this. Witnessing uniformed officers use that kind of physical intimidation is inexcusable and has left us feeling completely unsafe.
WARNING: Avoid getting off at Termini or any major terminus on these buses. They wait until the end of the line to corner you when you have nowhere to go. This isn't public transit; it’s a government-sanctioned racket designed to bully people. We have already escalated this to the National Antitrust Authority and the European Consumer Centre.

Complaint

Onderwerp: Complaint/ refund fine

To whom it may concern,
I am writing to formally contest the fine I received while travelling on a bus in Rome. I am extremely disappointed and frustrated by the way I was treated, as I acted entirely in good faith as a tourist who had purchased a valid 24-hour ticket.
Before boarding the bus, I bought my ticket from an official vendor who gave me no information whatsoever on how to validate it. On the back of the ticket, there was some text in Italian, which I could not understand. I assumed the ticket would be valid from the moment of purchase.
Once inside the bus, I tried to scan the ticket on a red machine — which I later learned was not meant for validation. I also wanted to check the information screen (which usually shows the stops and other details), but it was not working. In fact, I later noticed that in many buses these screens were not functioning at all.
I even asked local passengers for help, and they told me “it’s fine.” Naturally, I trusted their advice, since they were locals who knew the system better than I did. At no point did I attempt to travel without paying. I had purchased the correct ticket, and I genuinely believed that was sufficient proof of my intention to comply with the rules. After all, why would I buy a ticket if I intended to act illegally?
When the inspector fined me, I explained the situation, but I was told that “it says it on the machine.” That is simply unacceptable, because the machines were not working at the time. How can tourists be blamed for something they could not possibly know — especially when no proper instructions are provided and the equipment itself is malfunctioning?
This situation is not only unfair but also reflects poorly on the way visitors are treated in Rome. Instead of penalizing tourists who genuinely try to follow the rules, the city should ensure that its systems and staff provide clear information and functioning infrastructure.

2 of our group used virtual Airwallex…

2 of our group used virtual Airwallex GPay cards and received a green check mark confirming that the transactions were successful.

Then the conductors showed up. They scanned tthe virtual cards and and claimed the rides were unpaid — supposedly because another app had popped up automatically on the phone during their check.
They then refused to let us remove the app and rescan.
I truly believe it's not our fault. There is no warning you can't use digital cards, or that only certain types of cards are accepted.
Furgther, whey were extremely rude, ignored what we were saying, and treated us with blatant disrespect.
I was left with the strong impression that this was intentional behavior, not a mistake, as another couple on board, obviously also tourists, was treatred the same way. And they also used digital cards and were in a complete shock.

If you’re planning to use ATAC, only buy paper tickets in advance. Or better use UBER, even Black. at least it works.
Was planning a trip to Winter Olympics Milan 2026 but have now decided we could definitely find a better value for the money.
This was hands down the worst experience we had in Rome in 18 years of regular visits.

Thank You!

I would like to thank the female assistant at the Piramide ticket office, who provided excellent service while helping me make an online request for the Annual ticket. The new measure is difficult to compile, but with her patience and professionalism, I finally obtained a positive response from MyAtac.
A very satisfied client.I

The machine on the bus was broken

The machine on the bus was broken, we had just arrived in Rome with a valid ticket. When the Atac employee got on the bus to check our tickets while we stood next to the machine we cooperated, gave him our passports and told him te machine didn’t work and we wanted to show him. He roughly got us out of the bus and started yelling in Italian. We told him to not escalate the situation and to not raise his voice. We cooperated the whole time but the employee was only shouting and threatening us to pay the fine immediately. A very horrific experience!!

Bus Conductors Target Tourists

We have travelled all over the world and used the bus system without any issues apart from Rome.

Conductors target and scam tourists who are unfamiliar with the system.

I would avoid if I were you.

Fined on bus even though we paid

When we boarded the bus, we paid using a contactless card (Revolut) at the ticket machine, and the screen displayed “Transaction confirmed.” However, the payment didn’t immediately show up in our transaction history.

At the final stop, a ticket inspector scanned our card and claimed we hadn’t paid. Despite explaining that the transaction might appear later, he refused to listen, confiscated our ID cards, and issued a fine.

About 10 minutes later, the payment finally appeared in our transaction history.

We made a reclamation on their website.

Problems with the card and the staff

I have had the monthly pass of Rome for two weeks, and everything was working fine. Suddenly, it stopped working, and I had to go to an atac ticket office in Termini to understand what the problem was. The staff was extremely rude and didn't even try to speak english, which is outrageous, since Termini is the biggest station in Rome, where there are lots of tourists who don't speak italian. Even though the problem was from the company, she acted like it was my fault.

Very rude !

We are turists and for all our vacantion we used Atac company for travelkng . We payd from the first day for tikets from the train station but for our last day we had to buy another 4 tickets for our last time because one girl is pregnant and we had to arrive at the hotel. We went in the bus 81 and we tried for 2 times to buy from the app, as you suggest on the site.
We tried to go out on the next station but the controll came in and bloked our way even if i told them we want to go out because we couldn' buy our tickets. They were very rude and agressive with us.
We were fined all 4 of us with over 200 euro. Is not ok for an European city and for a civilazed one. 👎👎👎
