Simple and clear pillar 3a with very good service

I used finpension pillar 3a. It is a great product and finpension delivers a great service.

- It was very easy to setup the pillar 3a
- The app is very clear on what the status of your portfolio is, it is also very easy to use
- all tax relevant documents are delivered in time
- I recently had contact with the support team, because I needed additional documentation to use the pillar 3a in scope of buying property: the response was super fast and a custom and very constructive solution for my request was found

Overall I highly recommend finpension and their pillar 3a.

Impossible to register

When registering for an account for vested assets, their website let you choose a phone number from any country in order to receive a confirmation OTP. However the SMS never comes.

Contacted customer support, said cannot accept numbers from my country. But the website takes it and says SMS sent.

Wasted my time with this over 2 days trying to register. Solution is easy: Don't show a list of countries for phone numbers you don't support. Or better, support those.

Very satisfied with everything

I’m a user of both the 3rd pillar and invest products since early 2024 and am extremely satisfied with both. Fees remain low (they were actually free for 2025 but are generally low), they’re extremely reliable and the variety of potential strategies is great. Overall super satisfied. The customer service is super reactive and useful and the platform so user friendly that even beginners and non finance professionals can understand it easily. I’ve recommended it around in my personal life.

Overcharging when withdrawing pension

I feel it is my duty to point out that this company will not release your retirement money when you permanently leave Switzerland and settle outside the European Union (which is a right afforded by the Swiss pension law), unless you pay them 3'000 CHF. They do, however, apply a much lower fee if you keep the money with finpension AG at least one year.

When I prompted them about this contractual condition, which was not visible at the time I signed the contract, they explained to me that this is in order to prevent "vested benefits tourism". However, the mere fact that the fee is burried deep in the contractual clause suggests this is not the real motivation. In my view, the real motivation is for finpension AG to keep managing your money, possibly under a retrocession (fee-sharing) agreement with UBS AG whose funds it distributes and promotes. Such agreements were the subject of much controversy more than a decade ago in Switzerland.

For if the real purpose were to prevent the movement of such funds, the fee would have been made much more visible and the client would have been warned about it. 3'000 CHF is not negligible at all.

I feel this contractual provision is highly inappropriate, as it conflicts with the personal financial goals of the client. Let me explain why:
1. The fact that overseas clients are not warned of these fees results in an outcome in which the client feels forced to keep his/her money in underperforming finpension AG funds, even though some might need the funds for urgent medical treatment or in order to prevent the application of new and much less favourable legal provisions that could, for example, block the withdrawal altogether
2. In many cases, professionals are highly mobile and they spend only a few years in Switzerland. Therefore, the 3'000 CHF fee is a very high proportion of the retirement fund.

I feel that what finpension AG is doing is a bit deceptive. While it domiciles its retirement foundation in Schwyz, a low-tax canton, to attract clients that want to withdraw their pension at low taxation rates, it also imposed a much less visible fee of 3'000 CHF for such withdrawals, which is very high in absolute value and not justified by the workload this company is supposed to do in order to validate the withdrawal.

These second pillar accounts that finpension AG manages are called Freizugigkeitskontos, in German. Translated in English, this expression alludes to the easy mobility of the funds. So the name the law gives to these accounts is at odds with the very high fees this company imposes.

The problem also lies in the fact that the company itself states that it imposes these costs with the very purpose of preventing the mobility of the funds. In so doing, finpension AG institutes a practice that comes in contradiction with the very spirit of the Swiss retirement laws, laws that provide for free movement of such funds.

Another reason for concern, which in this case is directed to FINMA, the Swiss financial regulator, is that FINMA does not seem to oppose the practice of asking for such high fees. This, in my view, casts a shadow on the reputation of ye regulatory authority.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We’re genuinely sorry that your experience with us has left you disappointed, especially in such an important matter as your retirement savings.

To clarify the situation:

- The 3,000 Swiss Franc fee only applies in very specific cases: when vested benefits are paid out in cash abroad within the first 12 months in connection with emigration. It does not apply to transfers to a new employer’s pension fund, to another vested benefits foundation within Switzerland, or to other ordinary movements within the Swiss pension system.
- This fee is intended to cover the significant administrative effort and regulatory responsibilities required to verify entitlement and process cross-border withdrawals in these cases. It is not designed to keep clients’ money “locked in” or to profit from their situation.
- The 3,000 Swiss Franc fee is disclosed in our fee schedule and contractual documents, and we also explain it in our blog and other information materials. In addition, we inform clients individually in advance by email about the fee and ask whether they still wish to proceed with the withdrawal or transfer to another vested benefits foundation.

We certainly do not want any client to feel misled or forced into an investment they no longer consider appropriate. We take your criticism seriously and will use it to review how and where we communicate this fee.

Please let us know if you have any further questions. You can reach us at info@finpension.ch.
