Review of Practical Car and Van Rental Ltd

I had hired vans from this company on…

I had hired vans from this company on several previous occasions, including multiple-day hires and, more recently, through their Bridlington branch, without any issues until this week.

I returned the van at around 9:00 a.m. on Friday, 4 September 2026, approximately 30 minutes later than expected due to a misunderstanding over the return time.

The vehicle was a fairly scruffy, dark-grey Transit which I had hired for three days. On its return, the company identified a long but extremely fine grey scratch along the side. There was no dent or indentation, and the mark was barely thicker than a human hair. Although it stood out against the darker paintwork once pointed out, I had not noticed it during the hire. Given the amount of driving I had done on narrow country lanes, I can only assume it occurred during the rental period.

I was charged the entire £500 deposit plus VAT, making a total of £600, for this cosmetic damage.

I have been driving and owning vans for more than 30 years and, in my view, a £600 charge for a very fine surface scratch with no dent or indentation was grossly disproportionate to the apparent nature and extent of the damage. What particularly surprised me was that the full deposit was taken rather than a more modest amount reflecting what appeared to be a limited cosmetic repair.

I paid the charge because, at the time, I did not feel I was being offered any meaningful alternative.

Ironically, I had intended to hire a Luton van from them for four days the following weekend and to discuss a longer-term rental of six to twelve months while my own van was off the road. That business will now go elsewhere.

Based on this experience, I will not use the company again. I would strongly advise anyone hiring from them to photograph the vehicle very thoroughly before leaving the premises and again when returning it, paying particular attention to even the smallest cosmetic marks.

The company may have had its own contractual basis for applying the charge, but from what I personally observed, £600 for a hairline cosmetic scratch on an already well-used hire van appeared excessive and wholly disproportionate.

I run my own five-star-rated business dealing with the public for many years. I understand that businesses need to protect their property and recover genuine damage costs. What disappointed me was the apparent lack of proportionality or reasonable discretion in how this was handled.

After several previous hires without incident, this experience has ensured I will not be returning.

Stolen £89 from me. Their response? Tough luck

Order ref: 51544583

I purchased a garden trellis on the 7th April for a memorial garden I’m creating for my recently deceased father.
I’ve never bought anything from wowcher before so wasn’t aware of how they operate.
I paid £89 and have yet to receive it over a month later. I emailed customer support chasing the delivery. Apparently I’d missed an email from them requesting I “validate a voucher” and therefore the offer wasn’t “redeemed”
My voucher had been cancelled and the money (£89) retained!?
At no point did they consider it appropriate to remind me of this “oversight” however within 4 weeks of creating my wowcher account they did find time to bombard my email account with over 160 marketing emails!?!?!

I find this completely unacceptable and will not accept this as an appropriate response.

I feel like I’ve been scammed and that an unnatural injustice has occurred here.

My late father was a retired senior policeman with over 18 years service. To be scammed in such a way in trying to honour his memory by these charlatans makes feel sick to my core!

I demand a full refund of my monies without delay.
If I’m not compensated I will escalate this on a matter of principle regardless of cost.

Reply from Wowcher

Good Morning Jonathon,

Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Upon reviewing your order, we can confirm that the Wowcher voucher was purchased on 08/04/2026 and expired on 20/04/2026. As the voucher was not redeemed before the expiry date, unfortunately no delivery arrangement was made.

As advised prior to purchase, vouchers must be redeemed within the validity period shown on the voucher. If a voucher is not redeemed in time, it will expire and can no longer be used.

However, as a gesture of goodwill, we have added a refund in the form of Wowcher credit to your account for 100% of the voucher value. This credit is available for immediate use and will remain valid until 10/08/2026.

If there is anything else we can assist you with, please let us know.

Many thanks,
Wowcher Team

Review of Enterprise

Enterprise- Pockington. Not to be trusted

Hired a van for a week and was sadly involved in a serious collision on the motorway which wasn’t my fault. These things happen I suppose but not to me after over 30 years of careful driving this was my first ever incident.
I moved the van to a safe location and had to find my own way home after being messed around for 3 hours.
Paid £200 for an uber to take me and my partner home.
Was later informed that I was liable to a £2000 insurance liability fee regardless of fault which I reluctantly agreed however couldn’t afford to make the payment in one ago. Was agreed that a payment plan would be put into place with everyone i talked to at enterprise during numerous ensuing phone calls across the various departments of the business however this verbal arrangement was never (seemingly) communicated to the branch level. Was contacted at various times by Tom the manager asking for the full amount.
Last conversation I had with enterprise was on the 16th July where again a payment plan was discussed with monthly arrangement hypothetically agreed. The day after on the morning 17th July I noticed to my horror that payment of £2000 had been taken from my account using my debit card details under a “customer not present” authorization from a PDQ terminal in York by the area manager. I’m utterly outraged!!

They’ve taken money from me without authorization and have seriously jeopardized me financially. They’ve taken my mortgage payment and food allowance for the month.
My family are disabled with utter disbelief with how this company has treated us. It is inhumane and abhorrent behaviour.

Enterprise has the moral code of criminal thugs and in all my 20+ years of operating my own business I’ve never before encountered such financial barbarism.
