Going to small claims court
Back in February we ordered 7 Laurel root balls plus a couple of potted Red Robins. Delivery stated 2-3 weeks but they came in 4 weeks and they ignored most of my emails asking for a delivery update. When they arrived they looked very dry and when we unwrapped the root balls to plant them, they looked so hacked we were very doubtful they would survive. We didn't complain, we just planted them straight away in good compost and put a drip hose on them every day. However, despite our best efforts, they looked worse and worse every day until all the the leaves on 6 of the hedges turned brown. The leaves didn't even fall which suggests to me that the hedges arrived already dead. Instead of complaining to Seagrave, I took pictures and asked for their advice. They replied saying they would replace them. We received the order confirmation for the 6 replacements fairly quickly, but 6 weeks later they haven't arrived and they have ignored every single email I have made and they are not answering the phone. My emails were always very polite and were simply asking for an ETA. All I wanted was one reply to say when they would arrive and I wouldn't have cared if it was going to be another 4 weeks, I just wanted a reply. In my desperation for a response, I told them I would accept a refund if delivering the hedges was too difficult. But still nothing. Each time I emailed both their email addresses.
So, we have 6 dead hedges which would have arrived dead, and Seagrave have £300+ of our money and are not replying to any communication. We now have no choice but to go to small claims court to recoup our money. We took pictures of the hedges each week showing their deterioration and we have 30 other Laurel hedges we bought from other nurseries which are thriving. We're keen gardeners and know what we're doing so it was nothing we had done. I wasn't even going to write a review on here, but I feel now it has dragged on for so long they left me with no choice.
Seagrave, I was going to start the small claims court process on Monday, but I will give you another 2 days to respond. Please either deliver the 6 replacements or refund us by the end of Friday 27th or I will have to assume you have taken our money and never had any intention of replacing the dead hedges you supplied. I will also report you to trading standards for misleading and dishonest business practices.
Edit 03/03/2026
Went to small claims court, they admitted liability, and then went insolvent meaning I have now lost £350+. On their website, "Bill" explains how sorry he is and how he failed, but he didn't explain how he took 1000 customer's money and didn't provide the goods. They strung me along for over a month. They didn't answer emails or pick up the phone. They probably knew they were going under but strung people along and continued to take money. I can't do a chargeback request, I have lost £350+ the £30 admin charge for the small claims court. Bet they got a right laugh out of that.
