AI Narratives [book review]

AI Narratives: A history of imaginative thinking about intelligent machines is a 2020 collective book edited by Stephen Cave, Kanta Dihal, and Sarah Dillon, with about twenty contributing authors, through a series of 16 chapters on the relation between culture (literature, films) and our societal approach to AI, with varying perspectives, some overlap between chapters, a wide range of extrapolation, especially in relation with the oldest books (like Homer’s) and quotes from both books I enjoyed and books I had not heard of, to add to my to-red pile, like Roderick. Predominant place of Blade Runner, of Ĉapek’s Rossum’s Universal Robots, not only for introducing the term, and of Asimov, but also a detailed analysis of the great, thought-provoking, Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice. With a realization that Gibson’s Neuromancer had aged quite a lot… For the modern times, very little outside the US-UK realm, as for instance no mention made of Jules Verne or René Barjavel, although Zola makes an appearance when describing workers as automats, neither of the Germanic literature (from the Grimm Brothers onwards), nor of the non-negligible USSR science fiction production, nor yet of the Chinese input, like The three body problem. Other books that could have made it: the Murderbot diaries, and The Alchemy Wars trilogy, for digging into the blurry border between humans and AIs; A Memory Called Empire, for a clever approach to mind uploading, as well as the masterly Never let me go by Ishiguro, both dealing with a future where copies of humans The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay for the golem, the short story An Unatural Life, for its highly original take on the legal rights of humanoid robots, A Psalm for the Wild-Built because of… tea and Zen monk, obviously!

Among things I learned from AI Narratives, the story of Alan Turing (figuratively) mansplaining Ada Lovelace on her pronouncement that machines cannot be intelligent since they deliver what they are coded for. The mention of automatos in the Illiad. A mention of 1625 Gabriel Naudé Apologie &tc. that excludes magic as irrational, as well as introducing the term androide. The trivia that the creator of the (fraudulent) automaton chess player, Kempelen, also produced in 1791 an authentic if brainless speaking machine. The realisation that E.M Forster also wrote a futuristic novel, The Machine Stops (as well as the precursor of the symbolists, Villiers de l’Isle Adam, with L’Ève Future). Another trivia that cyberpunk first appeared in a 1983 short story by Bruce Bethke. A discussion of the elaborate Culture constructed by Iain Banks, albeit through volumes in the series I hade not read, along with the concept of OCP for outside context problem, akin to Taleb’s Black Swan. The least interesting (and final) chapter in the book is paradoxically the closest to data analysis, when Recchia runs a rather low-tech assessment of a subtitle dataset in relation with AI, if referring to Tufte’s rule of the baselin in the notes (p405).

Definitely enjoyable book, then, even though I mostly skimmed through the chapters during a day-trip to Lille on a Bank (!) holiday. Reading through it made me muse rather belatedly of a parallel between AI scare or adoration, and the non-AI societies, where individuals are (also) part of a structure large enough to miss the larger picture. From building pyramids to being part of the global economy. (This followed mostly from my surprise in seeing Dickens, Trollope, and Zola included in the discussion.)

6th Workshop on Sequential Monte Carlo Methods

Very glad to be back to an SMC workshop as it has been nine years since my attending SMC 2015 in Malakoff! The more for the workshop taking place in Edinburgh and at the Bayes Centre. It is one of these places where I feel somewhat returning to familiar grounds with accumulated memories. Like my last visit there when I had a tea with Mike Titterington…

The overall pace of the workshop was quite nice, with long breaks for informal discussions (and time for ‘oggin’!) and interesting poster late afternoons, helped by the small number of them at each instance, incl. one on reversible jump HMC. Here are a few scribbled entries about some talks along the first two days.

After my opening talk (!), Joaquín Míguez talked about the impact of a sequential (Euler-Marayama) discretisation scheme for stochastic differential equations on Bayesian filtering with control of the approximation effect. Axel Finke (in a joint work with Adrien Corenflos, now an ERC Ocean postdoc in Warwick) built a sequence of particle filter algorithms targeting good performances (high expected jumping distance) against both large dimensions and high time horizon, exploiting gradient shift MALA-like, as well as prior impact, with the conclusion that their jack-of-all-trades solutions, Particle­-MALA and Particle­-mGRAD, enjoyed this resistance in nearly normal models. Interesting reminder of the auxiliary particle trick and good insights on using the smoothing target, even when accounting for the computing time, but too many versions for a single talk without checking against the preprint.

The SMC sampler-like algorithm involves propagating N “seed” particles z(i), with a mutation mechanism consisting of the generation of N integrator snippets 𝗓:=(z,ψ⁢(z),ψ²⁢(z),…) started at every seed particle z(i), resulting in N×(T+1) particles which are then whittled down to a set of N seed particles using a standard resampling scheme. Andrieu et al., 2024

Christophe Andrieu talked about Monte Carlo sampling with integrator snippets, starting with recycling solutions for the leapfrog integrator HMC and unfolding Hamiltonians for moving more easily. With snippets representing discretised paths along the level sets being used as particles, picking zero, one, or more particles along each path, since importance weights are connection with multinomial HMC

This relatively small algorithmic modification of the conditional particle filter, which we call the conditional backward sampling particle filter has a dramatically improved performance over the conditional particle filter. Karjalainen et al., 2024

Anthony Lee looked at mixing times for backward sampling SMC (CBPF/ancestor sampling) cf Lee et al. (2020), where the backward step consists in computing the weight of a randomly drawn backward or ancestral history. Improving on earlier results to reach mixing time O(log T) and complexity O(T log T) (with T the time horizon). Thanks to maximal coupling and boundedness assumptions on the prior and likelihood functions.

Neil Chada presented a work on Bayesian multilevel Monte Carlo on deep networks. À la Giles, with a telescoping identity. Always puzzling to envision a prior on all parameters of a neural network. Achieving a computational cost inverse to the order of the MSE, at best. With a useful reminder that pushing the size of the NN to infinity results in a (poor) Gaussian process prior (Sell et al., 2023).

On my first evening, I stopped with a friend in my favourite Blonde [restaurant], as in almost every other visit to Edinburgh, enjoyable as always, but I also found the huge offer of Asian minimarkets in the area too tempting to resist, between Indian, Korean, and Chinese products. (Although with a disappointing hojicha!). As I could not reach any new Munro by train or bus within a reasonable time range I resorted to the nearer Pentland Hills, with a stop by Rosslyn Chapel (mostly of Da Vinci Code fame!, if classic enough). And some delays in finding a bus getting there (misled by google map!) and a trail (misled by my poor map reading skills) up the actual hills. The mist did not help either.

Klara and the Sun [book review]

Klara and the Sun is the latest book of Kazuo Ishiguro. I am a big admirer of Ishiguro’s books and always moved by their bittersweet exploration of humanity (or humanness?!). The remains of the day is one of my favourite books, competing with Graham Greene’s The end of the affair,  and I deeply enjoyed When we were orphans, Never let me go, and The buried giant. While this latest book exhibits the same craftsmanship in depicting human feelings and incomplete (in the sense of unsatisfactory) relations, I feel like I missed some component of the book, too many hints, the overall message… Not that I rushed through it, contrary to my habit, reading a few chapters at a time during lunch breaks. But I cannot set the separation between the subjective perception of Klara [the robotic friend], which is very clearly limited, both by her robotic sensors [lacking a sense of smell for instance] and her learning algorithm, furthermore aggravated by her wasting (?) some material to sabotage a machine, and the real world [within the novel, a vague two-tiered USA]. Because the perspective is always Klara’s. This confusion may be completely intentional and is in that sense brilliant. But I remained perplexed by the Sun central episode in the novel, which I fear reveals a side of the story I did not get. Like Джозі в якийсь момент перетворилася на робота? [Using Ukrainian to avoid spoilers for most readers!]  (In a way, Klara and the Sun is a variation on Never let me go, both dealing with a future where copies of humans could be available, for those who could afford it.)

the rising [book review]

When I received this second volume of the Alchemy Wars, the rising, it was most fortunately a weekend, and I devoured it within the two days! As hinted at by the title, hence not truly a spoiler!, this book ends up with the rise of the robots, thanks to the main characters already there in the first volume, Jax (reXened Daniel) the freed robot, Bérénice [missing her acute accents] the French master spy (code name Talleyrand), and Longchamp the charismatic commander of the Montréal (renamed Marseille-in-the-West) fortress. While the author seems to have invested more in the language of the Dutch Empire than in the one of the remaining French exiled to Québec, I did not spot crimes de lèse majesté on my native language (except for the above accents). A mystery remains though as to how, when crossing the Atlantic ocean, fugitives end up in Honfleur, east Normandy, and far inside the Channel. Returning to the plot per se, while its pace is breathless, with the revolutions of the characters’ paths bringing them into predictable contacts, and the dialogues are still great, the recourse to a hidden subterranean complex irked me as usual, while the repeated escapes of Bérénice from certain death, capture, brainwash, are just too much, even with the help of dei ex machina. This second volume is also less into pondering the meaning of free will and freedom, even though the sad discovery by Jax (sorry, Daniel!) of Neverland being somewhat a mirror of Netherlands is well-thought. Now waiting for the last volume and another free wekend (or a trip to Marseille!).

the mechanical [book review]

Read this 2015 book by Ian Tregillis with growing excitement as I was first unsure why I had ordered it. It is a mix of the Baroque Cycle and of the Difference engine, with Huygens playing the central role (rather than Newton). The postulate of the story is that he found [in the 1600’s] a way to create robots (or mechanicals, or yet Clakkers) with autonomy, prodigious strength, and unlimited “life” time. Endowing the Netherlands with such an advantage as to become the unique European power. Except for a small population of French people, living in exile in Montréal, renamed as Marseille-in-the-West, where the descendants of Louis XIV were desperately fighting the Dutch robots with their barely sufficient chemical skills… In addition to this appealing alternate history, where the French are arguing about the free will of the machines, and building underground railways to convey rogue mechanicals outside the Dutch empire, partly for being Catholics and hence following the Pope’s doctrine [and partly to try to produce their own robots], where the Pope is also a refugee in Québec, and where New Amsterdam has not turned into New York, but is a thriving colonial city in America, linked to the mother country by mechanical boats and Zeppelin-like airships, the machines are constrained to obey the humans, with the Queen’s wishes at the top of a hierarchy of constraints. And no Asimov’s law to prevent them from being used as weapons, to the French’s sorrow! But their degree of autonomous thought is such that a mere loosening of a component may remove the compulsion and turn them into rogues, i.e, free willed robots. On the converse side, a nefarious guild in charge of a Calvinist faith and of the maintenance of the robots is attempting to extend this control of the Dutch State over some humans. Which makes for a great setting discussing the blurry border between humans and AIs, with both humans and Clakkers bringing their arguments to the game… I am now eagely waiting for the second and third volumes in the series of The Alchemy Wars to arrive in the mail to continue the story!
